Sentai Mecha Discussion: Toqger
Note: I do have everything up till Lupinranger vs Patranger written up and will be posting those within the next consecutive days.
ToQ-Oh https://i.imgur.com/bWl4dwj.png https://i.imgur.com/LW7fKmn.png https://i.imgur.com/k3uS5Mf.png https://i.imgur.com/mtuq4gT.png https://i.imgur.com/XIFjNKB.png https://i.imgur.com/zWIbJKO.png As far as I can remember, this design was little controversial when it was first revealed. It probably wasn't what most people expected/wanted when ToQger was revealed to be a train themed sentai. While I do still prefer some of the previous train themed mechas that we’ve had in the past, I've warmed up to a lot of ToQ-Oh’s design aspect since it was revealed. The rainbow colour scheme is quite odd but I’ve gotten used to it and it does fit with the aesthetics and themes of the show. I actually do like ToQ-Oh’s overall silhouette, specifically the high shoulders as it gives it a very unique look compared to other sentai mechas. The only aspect about ToQ-Oh that I would say I really don't like, as weird as it sounds, is the lack of hands. The train fronts as hands just sort of look really awkward to me, especially when it's holding any weapon. ToQ-Oh perhaps wasn’t the best first impression of the ToQger mechas, but I don’t mind it. Diesel-Oh https://i.imgur.com/DiHaQ9z.png https://i.imgur.com/lzUUVuK.png https://i.imgur.com/TsYRx8z.png https://i.imgur.com/pXB1lSK.png I really like Diesel-Oh. The blockiness and wider shoulders really helps to evoke a strong silhouette and while I didn't mind ToQ-Oh's rainbow colour scheme, I do find Diesel-Oh's colour scheme to be more straightforward and appealing. The train heads also actually kind of work here, given that Diesel-Oh is more of a brawler. I also like the contrast it has with ToQ-Oh, as Toq-Oh had a lot of straight vertical lines whereas Diesel-Oh has a lot of straight horizontal lines. Cho Toq-Oh https://i.imgur.com/igsskRB.png Cho ToQ-Oh is ok as far as combination mechas go. The way ToQ-Oh and Diesel-Oh combine is fairly cool, with the two halves of Diesel-Oh intersecting between the body and arms of ToQ-Oh. The resulting combination however still mostly looks like ToQ-Oh with a few added pieces but I commend what things it did. Build DaiOh https://i.imgur.com/JD2vUZ9.png https://i.imgur.com/j0gCWaH.png I'm going to suspect that Build DaiOh is a lot of people's favourite ToQger mecha and yeah, there's a lot of good reasons for. Build DaiOh is probably the most solid of the standalone ToQger mechas, in terms of silhouette, design and colour scheme. It's the mecha that looks the most complete, like it doesn't look it's going to add anything on or be part of some crazy combination. It just looks like a simple, solid mecha. Cho Cho ToQ-DaiOh https://i.imgur.com/lH63UEy.png This combination is really eh. I won't say I hate it but I certainly think there're better ways that this combination could be done. It's mainly just Build DaiOh pieces added to Cho ToQ-Oh and whereas I found the way ToQ-Oh and Diesel-Oh combine to be quite inventive, the way Build DaiOh combines is rather mundane, just platform shoes, a new chest plopped on top of the old chest, and a new addition to Cho ToQ-Oh head. It just doesn't have much visual shake up compared to past combinations like Bakuretsu Kyoryuzin. Hyper Ressha TeiOh https://i.imgur.com/KsZ4hmJ.png https://i.imgur.com/8CffMWS.png https://i.imgur.com/gwbmYML.png Compared to the other big bulky final standalone mechas, TeiOh is ok. I think the proportions lean a little too far to it looking just big rather than looking powerful. And while I get that gold is the primary colour, I think a little more black and red would have helped break it up and lead to a better colour balance. It's still fine and I like the finger guns. ToQ Rainbow https://i.imgur.com/ZiwJxqm.png As the final combination, ToQ Rainbow is alright, I really like the idea of it being essentially a walking train platform though I do think the execution could still be improved. Like perhaps if there was some way to utilize the individual gimmicks of each Ressha, cause as is they’re just sort of there. I also think maybe a bit more design elements or colour could have been added to the base body, which is mostly just grey train tracks. All that aside though, I really the proportions of ToQ Rainbow. It manages to give ToQ Rainbow that big, powerful look that I felt was missing from TeiOh. It’s not my favourite final combination but its fine enough Shield/Car Carrier/Tank/Police/Fire/Drill https://i.imgur.com/knTkxMH.png https://i.imgur.com/2KfuWyN.png https://i.imgur.com/wmw089L.png https://i.imgur.com/ZqN7sk2.png https://i.imgur.com/6eZ8VD9.png https://i.imgur.com/bf3WDDl.png https://i.imgur.com/nkHwFm1.png https://i.imgur.com/vrLoiiZ.png https://i.imgur.com/RyWaOEz.png https://i.imgur.com/7mkThaM.png I decided to move all the auxiliary combination to here since they are mostly just arm swaps, and that's all I can say about them, they’re arm swaps. The Police and Fire Ressha are probably the most interesting to me of the bunch. ToQ-Oh Kyoryuzin feat. DenLiner https://i.imgur.com/1kesEUF.png Outside the novelty of it being a partially Kamen Rider based combination, there’s nothing else really all that impressive about this. Like I really struggle to figure anything interesting to say about this. Compared to Rocket Drill Go-Buster Oh which was kind of dumb and fun in a ludicrous way, the only thing this has going for it is that it has are the Den Liner as shoes and Kyoryuzin’s head. SafariGaOh https://i.imgur.com/ChA57Sc.png https://i.imgur.com/AoW1uXW.png https://i.imgur.com/19Qz8ag.png https://i.imgur.com/uEzXqYa.png https://i.imgur.com/Tc1rWM5.png https://i.imgur.com/CJQs18z.png https://i.imgur.com/AHh47jm.png Really like when the movie mechas retools go with really wild ideas and I'd say giving ToQ-Oh an animal form is a really wild idea. And thankfully, I feel SafariGaOh executed that idea about as well as it could. The new pieces added really help to differentiate it from ToQ-Oh and the animal form looks really neat. |
As a sucker for animal mechs, Safari GaOh is my favorite.
Going purely off the main series mechs, then it's Build DaiOh. While I dislike it's transformation, visually, it's the best. The others are all underwhelming, to say the least. Also, for a while after ToQ ended, I recall seeing Diesel Ohs everywhere on the secondary market. Was he a shelfwarmer or something? :lol |
ToQ Oh is my least favourite mecha on this page, and it might actually be my least favourite of all modern sentai mecha. I got used to it over time, and it's definitely unique, but it looks so flimsy too. I too dislike the fact that it just as the front of trains at the end of it's arms. Couldn't something poke out to at least resemble a gun or something?
But I really love Hyper Ressha TeiOh. It looks cool as a train and it looks cool as a robot. Build DaiOh is certainly solid, but Hyper Ressha really looks like a mystical machine that came from another realm. |
I won't disagree when people say ToQ rainbow as a toy is a tool rack where all of the trains hang, but in CGI it actually looks okay. My runner-up to ToQ Rainbow is SafariGaOh which looks impressive despite bearing a striking resemblance to Rescue Fire's pet mechanical lion due to its color scheme and making rare appearances.

Big fan of TeiOh. Just a great classic big chunky robot.
I'm a fan of the Toqger mechs tbh. Nice and simplistic, though I agree hands would help a lot. |
