Direct Translation Nation
Okay. I apparently accidently started something by hoping Megaforce is a direct translation of Goseiger. Which I hope it is, very much.
So once again we have a poll! And give your reason after you vote, you know mine. |
Sorry Sentai, an original story is the way to go for me. First of all, it provides greater freedom for writers to explore new story concepts and do what they want. Second, it forces them to not resort to lazy translations.
Finally, I think for Goseiger fans at least, it provides a different story that will not warrant comparisons, especially if the adaptation is inferior. Watching Samurai, I kept recalling what Shinkenger did better, but with RPM, I wouldn't have. I feel that in the case of RPM, both RPM and Go-onger can stand by their merits and be liked equally, but for something like Samurai and Shinkenger or even a well adapted series like Time Force and Timeranger, I have to choose one because they're otherwise so similar. |
Hell no for a direct translation, for reasons I posted in another thread.

were there not some instances where the Saban ended up being better? I think I read how Lost Galaxy was actually (per japan fans) a better show...and while I haven't seen Dekka Ranger, I do know I would still catch an episode of SPD and I know they did a great job with that show....

The beauty of Power Rangers is that in the beginning, it forged itself its own continuity, its own story, and it became more than a translation series. However, that has gone backwards, and now we're back in "Super Sentai in English" mode. Power Rangers lost its identity, what made it unique from Super Sentai.
And for its 20th Anniversary, I hope it can find its own niche again. |
To be, absolutely honest, when I first started watching Power Rangers I thought they were directly translated. And I know when we watch the first few season we look back with rose-tinted sunglasses. But.. Some of the stories just sucked. Most made no sense. And creating Lord Zedd helped redeem alot of them, for me personally.
I know I'm in the minority here. But I'd much rather they direct translate every season. Rpm being the only exception. I think the reason people are down on Samurai isn't the fact it's translated, it's the acting. (Antonio aside, he's the true gem of this season. Along with Deker.) Then look back at the seasons I enjoyed. Every one of them I enjoyed the most, aside from Rpm, were direct translated. Just my personal opinion. |
But where's the excitement then if you've seen the Sentai versions? Every week you'll know exactly what's gonna happen, and the show will hold no interest other than to see how good the actors are.
Alright the target audience more than likely doesn't even know there's a Sentai version, but PR20 shows that Saban hasn't forgotten about the older fans and a direct translation year after year is certainly something that could put people off. |

The only PR season that was mostly a direct translation and was good was Time Force, and that was because of 2 things: the actors, which I think even today most would say were excellent-for-PR standards, and Ransik, the main departure TF had from Timeranger.
