Mafex Shin Ultraman
1 Attachment(s)
Well this is interesting. Medicom got the Shin Ultraman license and will be releasing an articulated figure of Ultraman in their Mafex-line.
Curious to see how it will be different from the SHF. https://mobile.twitter.com/MEDICOM_T...48378052648961 http://www.tokunation.com/attachment...1&d=1613462244 |
I only expect three things from this.
1. It'll come with a Specium Ray 2. It's gonna cost more than Bandai's 50$ counterpart 3. It'll release in 2027 |
Makes me really hope that they start making figures for the other Ultramen. I've loved the MAFEX line ever since their RoboCop figure.
|
Can't go wrong with MAFEX, but yeah probably gonna be very pricy.
|
One change I did notice is bicep swivels, Figuarts doesn’t really do those anymore if it breaks up the sculpt too much.

Some of the Spider-Man figures are flimsy as hell and with how spindly Shin is, I'm already very wary. |

MAFEX used to have shit QC, but since 2019, they've been killing it.
I expect this to be amazing. |

In the interest of fairness though, Hush Batman is amazing. I do think the chunkier the figure, the better it is. Which is why I’m wary about this one. |

I used to HATE MAFEX, the three I had all broke one me or were awful. But I've gotten IW Thor, Carnage, Gwenpool, Shazam, Homecoming Spidey. All amazing. I guess I'd suggest looking up reviews of the Spider Verse Miles Morales they did. Scrawniest figure I've ever seen, only real issue is the clothing. |
I’ve got the Spider-Verse ones coming, they’re just caught up in COVID delays :lol
That’s fair though. My Iron Spider isn’t fantastic either but it hasn’t broken (though I know about the leg issues). Even if they have improved it definitely feels like a “wait on the reviews” sort of thing for me. Not that I expect this to be out until late 2022 at the earliest. |
I have two Mafex figures: original comic Spider-Man and Hush Batman. Both look great and I’ve had no issues. Spidey has fallen off my shelf a couple times without any damage, but ofc YMMV. I feel you hear more about Mafex QC issues than from Bandai. Medicom has solicited several Mafex figures but their release date has been up in the air lately
|
When it comes to MAFEX and their QC issues it really depends on the figure.
For example, with their Shazam figure, his arms love to pop off due to over-engineering, but when it comes to most of their Spider-Man figures, they're swell. Two things I always recommend with their figures though:
It should also be noted that despite a ton of stigma you'll read online, MAFEX's' QC has improved greatly over time. Typically it is just the hip joints that you need to watch out for, which is a huge improvement over the early days where their figures were active hand grenades. |
Used to buy Mafex figures when they were around $65 around 5 years ago. But the prices have been slowly creeping up and they basically priced me out of buying anymore.
|
I own two Mafex figures, one has a few loose joins but the other is perfect, definitely on Figuarts level.
I'm mainly curious about accessories here. A beam effect would be cool, but they haven't shown Shin Ultraman doing a bema attack in the trailers so I would assume they would not be allowed to reveal it yet. And what else could they include? Some diorama pieces maybe? Anyhow, I have the SHF on pre-orders but I probably will get this one too. I really like Shin Ultramans design so I will buy a couple figures of all types and sizes, and I don’t mind getting two highly detailed articulated figures at the same scale. |
One thing Mafex figures has over SHF is stands are included

I have to say, I'm a HUGE MAFEX fan. I'd even rank them over Figuarts in pretty much all instances at this point - sculpt, proportions, and definitely accessories.
Even some of the older ones from back when they were notorious for QC problems are great on my end, and their Marvel ones are easily the best 1/12 scale versions of those characters going. Really looking forward to this one, and hopefully opens the door for more toku figures from them! |
Also includes only hands. Huh.
Direct comparison with the SHF: https://i.imgur.com/cSqdF0z.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/qQWopFV.jpg https://i.imgur.com/SA9Sc8c.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/BPBm0r5.jpg https://i.imgur.com/VE0KW4p.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/Kir5Kqe.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hOZRlgR.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/yQ6Hj1d.jpg |
He looks so... evil.
|
Hmm, I think I prefer SHF's joint set up more. However, if you gave me these pics without context, I'd have a hard time thinking which one was the SHF.
|
SHF is definitely better at... not necessarily hiding joints, but making them feel natural with the sculpt where it doesn't read quite as much as breakup as it does here. This one still looks excellent, though!

The MAFEX definitely looks to be the better of the two, but the SHF will probably be half the price, so if I felt the need to get this I'd probably just get the SHF one.
