Saw Kuuga and Ryuki
Goddamn!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff
|
I haven't seen Kuuga yet, but I loved Ryuki.
Kinda underrated because of it's rather melancholy tone, but it's still a neat show. |
Kuuga is good. It's a really great alternate perspective on the lone hero Kamen Rider cliche, and it gets pretty dark at times. Definitely something worth watching for a fan of the franchise.
I wouldn't recommend it as a first series, though. It works better when you're familiar with all of the cliches and tropes of the other shows. Then you can really appreciate what they did to further explore that in Kuuga. |
Ryuki is utterly fantastic. I'm heavily biased saying that, and I'm not sure why, but no other Kamen Rider series has made me go "eh, maybe I'll watch one more episode today," no less than three times every other day or so.
Oh, and I like Kuuga a whole lot too, but I keep getting distracted to the point where I've decided once I get around to finishing it, I'll probably watch the episodes I have seen (17, stopped right after the recap episode) over again just to remember what happened. |
Fixed the title for ya :)
Also I do really enjoy what little I've seen of Kuuga so far. I'm only about 5 episodes in so far but I've yet to see a fansub group that's actually done the whole series. I usually try to go TVN but they definitely don't have enough of the episodes. Ryuki, ehhhhhhh. Just doesn't really do much for me unfortunately. |

They're working on V2s now, with some bonus stuff added. I'm actually helping them out with that. As for the preference for TV-Nihon, I don't want to get into the whole fansub wars biased preferences. From a purely objective point of view, TV-Nihon made a lot of mistakes with their earlier releases. And a lot of times, their adherence to japan-isms come at the cost of the writing being very stiff. That's not to say they're a bad group. It comes down to style most of the time. But for older releases, other groups have worked to correct their mistakes. For current releases, I prefer Over-Time. If for no other reason, than just to have softsubbed episodes. But the dialogue just sounds so much more natural. |
Kuuga and Ryuki are both great shows, although I freely admit that I much prefer the former. I really love the early Heisei shows (that aren't Faiz) - Kuuga through Hibiki. They had a really unique feel to them that the later, more blatantly merchandise-driven shows have largely lacked. I love it when the show has a central mystery at its heart, something that both the characters and the viewers are trying to figure out at the same time. Kuuga and Agito both handled that really well.
As for Ryuki, it had a great set up, some cool designs, and one of my favorite Rider movies ever. I rewatched it last year and liked it even more than I did the first time around. |

One thing I do like about the more recent post-Decade seasons is that the heroes are HEROIC again. The shows feel more like superhero shows, with a main character that understands what being a good guy is all about. |

Kuuga, Agito, and especially Ryuki have a darkness that stems from genuinely horrifying premises. Ryuki's is probably my favorite in that regard because it is completely terrifying if you stop and think about it - every single reflective surface is a potential gateway for a monster to reach out and grab you at any time. Stop and look around at all the reflective surfaces around you right now and tell me that prospect wouldn't scare you shitless. |

For current stuff I prefer Nihon simply because I love the flashy text and graphics they use. Even if I have to wait a bit longer versus Overtime it doesn't bother me too much. Though I do get way behind on episode discussion because of those guys :lol |
