Excellent episode.
I have to note that the pacing was still a little too fast. But now that the first arc is over, I hope we see the show slow down. Great episode from a character perspective. We get good character moments from nearly everyone. I loved how Kou and Melt got to fight the Minasaur as a duo, which deviates from standard Sentai formula. And they played with the idea of a monster's reign of destruction remaining even after its defeat, which is a good way to subvert a trope. Humour with the Sage and Kureon was genuinely pretty funny. Seeing Banba lower his sword due to the pleas of the others despite knowing it is for the greater good was a fantastic moment for his character development. First full team transformation and roll-call was phenomenal. KishiryuOh Five Knights moves better than expected but is still pretty clunky. I hope they don't default to this one from now on. I love that despite everything, Banba still does not accept the others as his comrades just yet. My worry was that Banba and Towa operating separately from the main team would end after this episode but it looks like it will still be happening for the foreseeable future. I expect Towa to be a liaison between the two groups as Banba and Kou butt heads. Seeing Kou react to his Master being avenged and the end sequence where the main three breathe a sigh of relief actually made me feel a little relieved too. It's funny - it's six episodes of non-stop action but maybe that's why it felt so cathartic. It's a genuinely care-free, relaxing scene in show that's given us nothing but constant adrenaline until now. |
I gotta disagree.....This Episode, continuing off of last Episode, still fails to do some of the basic things any Super Sentai should be doing in its first couple Episodes: ESTABLISHING OUR MAIN CHARACTERS' CHARACTERIZATION. The closest we got to that was Bamba listening to his younger brother in not killing the person the Minosaur was feeding off of, and him later on hinting towards a backstory we don't know about pertaining to what he & Kou discussed on the rooftop. I really have to wonder why it's been 5 Episodes later & we STILL have no real idea on the characters of Melt & Asuna, meanwhile we just skipped over them in favor of Towa & Bamba, who don't get me wrong, are still somewhat interesting in their own right, but you'd think we'd first establish the first trio we were introduced to....
And I know what people are gonna bring up, "But Koh is established to have a revenge plot with Tankjoh!" Yea, and guess what happens at the end of this Episode?!! Tankjoh is ALREADY DEFEATED?!! I know we've all been wary of this show's fast pacing, but GEEZ...!!! This just confirms it. |
This episode was above average IMO. This pacing issue really needs to stop. Tankjo has only been a major threat for, what, 2 to 3 episodes? And he's done and dusted already? Koh avenging his master, etc. didn't feel satisfactory. Yes, he defeats Tankjo but their whole "rivalry" is weak and as a villain, Tankjo is weak. We learn hardly anything about him except "strong, likes hurting people". That's it.
Five Knights is ok. But i find the simpler combinations to be better than the multi (Kishiryu Oh Rex, Three Knights). I will say I'm glad Bamba doesn't automatically become friendly and "join" the Ryusoulgers like Towa did. Overall, Ryusoulger needs to fix this pacing issue. The plot goes by too fast and so does the character development. We're getting about 15 or so episodes (usually the amount that consist of the first "arc") worth of plot, development, etc. in 6. I appreciate that they're no wasting time but everything is going by too quick. |
Kreon reminded me again with some luckuro bits, but he's clearly more of a sneaky violent manipulator that can accomplish more than creating motw. Generals come and go like magi and gao call back.

This past two episodes really sold Kreon too me. He is just my kind of funny. Him trying to film a video to be popular? I'm all for it.
I could really use a lot less of the chumping of the ryusouls, its getting too repetitive. I would have thought that after a couple of episodes it would be toned down but it hasn't yet. And I've said it before, they really seem to be focusing more on mech fights than ground fights for this series which is ok I guess but I would really like to see more fights on the ground. Koh and Melt fighting the Minusaur just wasn't enough for me. And next week we get a new general already. I don't know how many generals they intend to introduce but at this pace they need a lot of them. Tankjo got defeated a tad too early but I'll trust that the writer knows what he's doing. |

Man, Bamba's got more edge than his own sword. Someone really needs to explain to this guy that he's in a show for small children. I'm not gonna lie, he's by far my favorite character. This was by far my favorite episode so far, too. Despite the continued issues with characterization and the like, the plot here was genuinely engaging, and simple, heroic stuff like seeing Koh and Melto fighting a monster to cure their poisoned friends, while they themselves are being hurt by poison, is great. It's almost everything I could want in a Sentai episode. Major props for the memorable way Tankjoh went out, too. That was a cool finishing move. But now that this show started the process of ironing out its flaws, I want to elaborate on why I feel this first arc was so sloppy. I keep seeing everyone mentioning how overly fast the pacing is, but in my opinion, the amount of episodes they did this in is absolutely NOT the problem. Or at least, wording it that way implies to me that they simply did things too fast, which belies the real problem that they straight up forgot to put in a ton of connective tissue to make these plot points work. It's not a matter of not having enough space, it's how inefficiently they're using it. Think about stuff like the Masters getting bumped off in the premiere. That seems like the obvious way to start the show to me, but I think why it felt so wrong to people was because they didn't use the screentime they got to properly establish the bond between them and the main characters in a way where we would care when they died. Have Koh and Master Red doing some father/son style bonding over something (like they showed in the flashback this episode!). Instead we got scenes like the Masters walking through the woods, telling us about their faith in the new Ryusoulgers in a blandly expository way when they could've been showing it. Imagine if Towa's lady friend was introduced BEFORE he was already partway through his arc. Imagine the added significance this plot would've had. She doesn't need to be the focus of a whole episode or anything. Just a quick scene or two is all that's needed to establish this stuff. But instead we waste time with quick scenes establishing stuff like that guy with the mask existing, which hasn't even been followed up on yet. That the crux of the issue for me. Nothing is properly explored, and it absolutely could've been in the same amount of time with tighter writing. Maybe Koh's desire for revenge against Tankjoh would've felt less limp if it were tied into other aspects of the plot. Maybe if you gave Tyramigo a motivation for running away, even a simple one, it would've been a chance to develop the characters more as they have to convince him to come back or something. I'm aware I'm being an armchair writer here and maybe I'm making it sound more simple than it is, but I'm also thinking these ideas up quickly and on the fly compared to an entire staff of people with way more time, including a writer who doesn't quite seem to know what to do with this show yet. That being said, it is, without a doubt, definitely getting better. These episodes impressed me quite a bit, and so as long as Ryusoulger keeps up this momentum, I won't be complaining anywhere near as much as I have, and with all of the above off my chest, I'm willing to give Ryusoulger a fresh start. |
There were things I liked about this ep, but it was was a major disappointment after last week's cliffhanger. It's the first ep that felt kind of bullshit?
Everything was moving along great until... the poisoning plot got resolved by the lamest Deus Ex Machina ever. Where the hell did that Elder guy come from? Was he on anyone's radar? And he just happened to have the ability to magic-zap a piece of the Minusaur's fang into a cure? Shouldn't Ui's dad have played a part in this, considering it was his scientist friend who told him to reverse engineer an antidote from the Minusaur's DNA? Why set that up if you aren't going to pay it off? Also, there was zero explanation for why there were two of the dog Minusaurs. They were just like, "what if he has a twin!?" What? Why? Huh? I'm going to chalk this ep's whackness up to growing pains, but it was seriously frustrating from just a basic storytelling perspective. |
I watched episodes five and six together, and it made more sense watching it as a one hour show than as a half hour. I also feel like it should have been put into place of episode 4 only because in 4 Towa was less lenient about killing others, and then all of a sudden PUPPIES!
The motivation thing I think is kind of a lost cause, only because they can't quite do the same thing as KyoRyuger and go find lost dinosaurs. Or maybe they will. They can't go avenge their masters like several other series have done. Or maybe they will. I do like that TankJo was just kind of a six episode filler manager, because they haven't shown the big boss yet. So for now, I'm just watching in binge pieces and letting it go. What I do like? That Tyramigo came in and got Koh and Melt out of there. Of course he was going to go find Elder, that makes more sense than finding Ui's dad. Plus, kebabs are awesome. |
