Was there a Kenzan henshin background?
|
You mean Green Screen/Stock Footage?
No he still got a real time Henshin, we also got a Buster real time one too at the same time. |
no bonne lecture from tassel this week :'D
Calibur face was hidden as expected from the preview so it might not be kento's father (which makes me sad because I want this actor to be a "real" appointed rider in a series and not just riotrooper or stuff). For drama sake it will probably be the old Saber but I'm not too fond of that twist. Mei funny scene was a bit too long for my taste this week. But I'm happy that the Rintaro X Mei ship is kinda officially acknowledged after last weeks interactions. I don't get the preview for next week though. Am i supposed to be afraid Buster will die next week ? I just saw one of these petrified guys returned to normal after Medusa Megid was beaten. So why would I feel scared ? The timing doesn't feel right. Maybe there will be a twist making him not possible to return to normal, that's possible, but doesn't change the fact the timing of this ep resolution + preview is kinda bad on this side. |

I'm not worried about Buster turning to stone, I'm worried about Buster turning to stone and then the Megid realizing "Hey, let's shatter it so he can't return to normal" thus killing him that way. |

Also spoiler pic for next week (that was not in the preview so be warned) : https://i.imgur.com/cAYzU5w.jpg Outside of the fact there are lot of jokes about "Hey he is a dad and Kamen Rider so he will die soon hehe", the actor is never present in the cast pictures posted on social medias. Megid member often post together, and Touma/Mei/Rintaro/Kento/Ren are often together too. But I never actually saw Ryo. oof. Hope it doesn't mean he is done filming already. |
I do still think someone not among main three Riders might go out of commission before the first quarter is up, but certainly not next week.
Neato episode. The journey to Avalon was more of a grocery trip than anything, and mainly just set-up for next week's big robot toy. What I liked better was the absolutely crowded fight among the Riders and a four different monsters. It would be exhausting to have fights like these often, but a big messy brawl every now and then I think really drives home the feeling that there are a lot of parties involved in this conflict. |
Blades Fantastic Lion looks, well, fantastic. I don't know why but despite the clunkiness it has a certain knightly charm to it. I suppose the wings on the back help.
The transformation jingle on the other hand is not so fantastic. The overlapping of the two voices was terrible. It sounded more like a chaotic duel than a harmonious duet. EDIT: The enemy exploding into water droplets instead of bursting into flames was a nice touch however. Really hope they do that some more some in the future. |
Fantastic Lion was really nice to see, and our little tease at King of Arthur is also nice. Sadly unless they end up making extra books that relate to it or adding it into a power up, then it'll likely fall by the wayside.
Which is a shame because you'd think, given Knights and stuff that King Arthur's power would be a pretty big deal. Granted, no idea what the next quarter has in store for us, and it could possibly keep it relevant. I also do like how during the summoning of the 13 Books on each side, there did seem to be like, actual books in that regard and not just random ones. Like the little cameo of our Chinese and Toysrus exclusive books on the Sword of Logos' side. Alongside three books... red, blue, yellow, that all seem to have similar theming to each other. Hmm... :eyebrow |
So, just in case there was any doubt left, this episode marks what I'm sure will only be the first of many episodes written by Keiichi Hasegawa, meaning the entire trio of Ghost writers is assembled once again, as if Saber needed any more help making people who weren't fond of how that series came out worried. Look, he wrote a lot of great episodes of Double too, alright? It'll be fine!
One very talented person who I don't believe ever touched Ghost, on the other hand, was Hidenori Ishida, who directs this one with some serious flair. I honestly thought it was even more stylish than Kamihoriuchi's episodes the last two weeks, and that blows my mind a little. I know that, thanks in large part to Die's watch threads and the one I did for Kuuga, I basically haven't shut up about the guy on this forum in, what, close to an entire year at this point? But I swear I'm not even actively trying to single him out. It's just that, ever since I started making an effort to pay attention to director names in Rider during Zi-O, I've quickly come to realize there are few directors who have worked on the franchise that are both so prolific and so readily identifiable in style. And that brings me right back to that one word – style. The episode is positively dripping with surreal visuals and more impressionistic ways of portraying scenes I don't think would have the same impact coming from most directors. Calibur's demonic chanting with no background, the distorted unreality of Touma and Kento's initial entrance into Avalon, Rintarou's emotional training/flashback, heck, even just Mei's cartoonishly elongated almost fatal fall, the visual touches I loved in this one were almost countless. They look great, and benefit the story being told, which is all you can ever ask for. And the story being told, for the record, is one I'm quite enjoying in its own right. I think the A/B plot structure especially works leagues better here than it has been so far, with the epic Rider-on-monster battle royale escalating in a way that underscores the urgency of Touma's quest to become Saber again. It's not the most meaty episode in terms of new revelations or development, though; there's a distinct "middle chapter" feel to the whole thing, but it's a very exciting way to bridge a gap. The most genuine progression in the whole episode was probably wacky female lead Mei pretty blatantly crushing on skilled secondary Rider Rintarou, which is both 1000% Akiko from Double, and also something I'm excited to see have the groundwork laid down for smoother and earlier than Double did. I don't mean to diss the epic fantasy plot going on, because, again, I'm enjoying that too, but I'm honestly more excited to see if this goofy romantic subplot will go anywhere in the future. |
Not gonna lie, for a brief moment I was very much invested in the thought of Zooous yeeting Mei right out of this show. I wish he did. Such a useless, annoying and terrible character. I get why they have her, a character bound in reality is needed as a counterpoint to all the fantasy swordsmen but I wish she wasn't so... ridiculous. Given we have the Ghost people at work here it's kind of understandable though, they only really know how to do the Onari-kind of comedic character apparently and Mei perfectly follows suit.
Anyways, at the moment I’m invested in two things happening: - Calibur's identity. Just because it's weird that they showed the actor before but still obscure his face now, and his voice is clearly Blood Stalk'ed too. - Daishinji / Slash, because I really like his character and how they're setting up his inevitable Rider-identity. The scene where he was sitting in the base, knowing he is needed by his fellow swordsmen but can't bring himself to join them was really good. Excellent tease with the weapon as well. Lastly, random thoughts: Did they drop the filter for the Wonder World portion or did they forget? Also, I very much enjoy the non-stock footage transformations, more of that please. |

And will they let the kid replace that Rider? Not impossible since AR Hibiki is also a kid. |
I feel Buster/Ryo may be the Kujo Kiriya of Saber unfortunately...
|
Thinking back on it, I find that scene when journeying to the desert of Avalon really funny because of just how trippy/early 2000's music video it feels, alongside seeing Calibur stumble around drunkenly as well.
Also just the fact that I was reminded how it looked very much like a Wizards of Waverly Place scene transition. |
I...
I think this has been my favorite episode so far? Water Lion is really growing on me, and the new suit looks great. Oh yeah Saber was doing a thing too. It was alright, I guess. |
I'm not sure if King of Arthur is a power up form, or just a book.
We've yet to see a triple red Saber yet. So... did they break the typical power up rule by letting a secondary Rider get a full form first via Nagare? |
I am just glad that we have a blatant heteroseksual relationship again. Mai and Rintaro are such balanced pair too: calm person and chaotic person, but both are focused on their jobs.
Anyway, this series really do have a good way to balance all of the kamen riders. We're only at episode 7 and we already have a royal rumble of sort between Riders and Villains, amidst a story of soul searching and clues gathering. |
Yeah, this was a good one! Stylish, definitely playing sus with Calibur's identity, and doing a good job for all the Riders. Obviously, Rintaro gets the best showing (Nice for someone who isn't the primary Rider to get the first big combo), but Touma doesn't shy away from setting up next episode and also incentivising me to go read some King Arthur lore. Or maybe I'll just fill it with Holy Grail quotes.
"Let's not go to Avalon. 'Tis a silly place." |
Something about this season just feels off to me. It's throwing a lot of plot, worldbuilding, character arcs, and gimmicks that I hardly feel like it has time to breath.
The suits and action are great as expected, but I guess I'm not buying into the series as a whole as much as others are around here. At least Rintaro has been pretty good so far, easily my favorite character of this show |
I hate to be the negative person of the week, but I personally found it to be a really poor showing. The pacing to me at least felt really quick, and I have a suspicion that there is something going on behind the scenes as a whole, the whole production design seems to be rushed. Much of the effects work of this episode, aside from some of the weapons, and the random final boss Touma faces, was barely finished by the look of it. And ironically the only character I seem to like of the cast is Mei, With Kenzan's portrayal being something I loathe . Much of the story choices here seem out of place too, I would have expected King Arthur to be a late stage thing, and the opening scenes of Blades taking the books to train needing to take place after Touma and Espada leave, seeing they should have needed the books Blades had to open the portal... My own personal opinion anyway.
