Ikki... You'll be alright.
|
So... That might change with the subs, but... Were they going for drama, or was this supposed to be comedic?
I think they were going for the former, but... I don't know, this honestly just felt hilarious to me. Both Kagero and the Deadman felt more like malicious clowns than legitimate threats to me... I really don't know what to think of this one... And about my reaction to it. |
Back in the magazine scans, I thought Ikki was actually going to invite Hiromi and George, but no they were actually just on watch. Which is better, honestly. I love seeing Hiromi eyeing Daiji, also it kinda shows just how much the show was rewritten to fit Hiromi. The episode could have removed Hiromi entirely and not much would change, just that the Deadmans wouldn't transform into kaijin or Vice would be sidelined instead to fight them.
Though, I wonder if the Deadmans revealing themselves already ruins Aguilera's "Achilles' heel" plan, seeing as Julio had already revealed himself to Sakura's eyes. Unless they have it so she somehow didn't see that the episode later. George seems to have taken an interest into Genta, and I'm legitimate looking forward to that. He kinda sucks being a father, but he has the heart at least and is a well-meaning guy. I wonder if he'll become a rider/was a rider. Interesting that Vice now has a little more agency. Going to meet George by himself, and the chat logs where he attempts to calm down Ikki. I want more of that, that Vice. I want more of him being his own character as opposed to living rent free in Ikki's head. Evil. I love the suit, Live is going to have to try really hard to win me over because I love Kagerou's chuuni fuckery and Evil's suit. So, I'm not really sure how much I'll prefer Daiji being Live as opposed to Kagerou being Evil. The belt, however... is kinda whack and not really cool looking and sounding as well. https://i.imgur.com/YtyGgdA.jpg Quote:

I wonder what's going on with that customer family as well. I'm unable to say if their scenes/reactions are here for comedy or if there's something in the plot about them.
I want to take it as a red herring for comedy purpose, but their scene + the scene with George about the dad look a bit like this as well. Both can't be red herrings right ? that would be too much. |
Nope, the subs did not help from getting the feeling that the Deadman are more a group of costume shop employees on a power trip and Kagero being a teenager screaming "IT'S NOT A PHASE MOM!" after living in a Hot Topic for a week, out of my head :D
I'm pretty certain this was not what I was supposed to take away from the episode :D |
I love how Evil's Transformation Standby Loop is just "Eenie, Meenie, miney, mo."
Meanwhile, I think that comedy and drama were both used in this episode. Also, for Layton13 asking whether it was intended to be comedic or dramatic, https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/...52/470/1b5.gif |
No, I get what you mean, but I only got comedic. The drama just didn't hit for me, which made me feel really weird at laughing at Kagero trying to be evil and threatening.

After 7 weeks, Yukimi is finally discharged from hospital!
Even while bathing naked with others, George has no sense of personal space and gets really close to Genta. Watch out, Yukimi! George's relationship with Vice seems to have improved since their argument last episode, as he responds politely to Vice's concerns about Ikki and the onsen hotel and playfully boops him on the head with Osutoderuhammer 50. Kagerou seems to be the strongest threat right now, with the Deadmans trio hopelessly unable to get in the way of his scheme to kill Ikki when the Igarashis reach maximum happiness. It's very comedic how they get pushed around by him so easily like they're suddenly become merely nuisances, as it makes them look more sympathetic and shows that their plans don't always work out. Aguilera's so frustrated about him showing up and stealing her focus, Julio's mocking her about it and Olteca's waiting to see what happens next. They're an entertaining group of villains. Tasuke seems to be more than just the friendly unassuming regular patron at Shiawase-Yu we thought he was, as he and his family are staying at the onsen hotel to spy on the Igarashis for some reason. Almost like he used to be like, a ninja, or something, huh? ;) Evil's Henshin is awesome! The way the bats emerge from his shadow and merge to create a giant red-mouthed megabat to swallow him, very awesome! Kind of like how Kagerou is figuratively consuming Daiji, the human stuck living in their own shadow. I guess it's good that Evil got the Jackal Vistamp in exchange for Kong, since Fourze doesn't have a Dark Rider. Demons shows off his Showa powers, using the Vistamps of the first Rider and the first MOTW together. I think it's appropriate how Hiromi got to be the Rider based on Showa, since his type of heroism is a little more old-fashioned with him repeating his very dramatic catchphrase. Ikki and Vice have switched roles again and it's more severe this time, with Revi focusing only on Evil and losing his cool, going against the contract he made with Vice in Episode 2, with the line chat showing Ikki dismissing all of Vice's very valid concerns for their shared life. Vice has to pretty much take responsibility for this fight all on his own, configuring the Revislasher for Revi and trying his best to remind him that they're supposed to be a team. So now it's the devil who's being oppressed by the host. Ikki is so willfully ignorant that he becomes a danger to himself and others. He completely ignores Vice and any suggestion that this trip might be anything other than happy family time. Yukimi's advice is important, that a person who can't smile can't bring smiles to others. Ikki wants so badly for his family to be happy that he pretends that any problems that could get in the way of that don't exist, to the point where even the bad guy Kagerou waging a vendetta on him actually has to intervene and stop him from poisoning himself cause he foolishly refused to listen to Vice's warning. Remix and Machine parallel: .... I can't think of one! There's nothing close enough to Kong to compare with, unfortunately. Which is a shame, since I imagine a gorilla Machine would be pretty strong. |
An episode about finally another family reunion, for celebrating Yukimi's release from the hospital. So this series didn't only take the injuries for a civilian seriously, but didn't handwave her recovery too, with her release being a major plot point as this episode shows. I do like that there's something that is set up about the family members here outside of the most significant one in Ikki as the main character or Daiji with Kagerou, though I'd hope they'd have more prominence too moving forward.
Genta being set up as Ikki's counterpart here by Yukimi with both having similarity in them not taking care of themselves much, where it's actually the reason of her falling for him... hope this'd be one of Genta's secret according to his actor probably elevating him just like said Ikki, he did take a bold action here of trying to hold Evil in place, though of course a normal human would hold no candle to a Rider, being dropped into the pool... almost if he takes turn of being another Igarashi who gets hospitalized after Yukimi for 8 episodes. Another moral lesson from Yukimi (kinda good that they'd still involve her as much as they can even when hospitalized before, though words can be applicable whenever you're injured or not), where though Ikki already starts small with making a family happy first before going on others (and uses that to guide others as well) and obeys her guidance to walk the path of Kamen Rider, Ikki should start even smaller, making himself happy first. Hero complex is a flaw and it places unfair burden on yourself, where it can sacrifices their own happiness for the sake of others around, an important thing to note is that making people happy means it includes themselves, thus they have to adjust her approach so that they as well as others around can be happy.. Yeah Sakura's exclusive meanness towards the family members doesn't mean that she'd want her family members to suffer or die... including her father (though dunno if she'd have her own demon that may for example go attacking anyone "unimpressive" for instance). Though still doesn't mean her attitude is ok just because they have 'hidden caring part' for them particularly parents. The parents too need to learn for how males and females can interact without building love, in her with "Tamaki", as she'd befriend the other males at her dojo too y'know... She did her own bold action as well in taking Aguilera head on for her family's sake, but as much as she's great in karate, she's still a normal human, which'd have Aguilera hand her ass, probably showing that she's superhuman in her 'human' self. Just like Baruba against the 'super cop' Ichijou before. I kinda expected Aguilera to step on Sakura after beating her, but she herself claims she'd 'play' with her later. The girls' rivalry is probably set up here, but I'd hope the series would still let males score attacks on them too. Kagerou's in-universe reveal is more devastating on the emotional side rather than the physical damage (like Genta only got plunged into the pool), with the Igarashis learning, which is what to be expected when Kagerou drags out the reveal so that it happens in the family's happiest times. Shown in Ikki, who may have Revice, but the emotional injury from Daiji's supposed betrayal in his eyes, made him all harder to fight back against him. Though even if Kagerou had petty sadistic qualms on Ikki, there are even some parts of him that is slightly better than Vice, ironically, that he didn't blindly attack the other Igarashis and is not a cannibal. But he quite resolves the conflict, pretty quickly, of him having no problem admitting that he's Daiji's demon instead of Daiji himself, even if not telling Ikki would cause a pretty impactful divide between the Igarashis. Good work for a villain, not making it any harder for the family than it already is :p. So Daiji-Kagerou struggle so far is made of who possesses the body, like something such as Mutsuki with Spider Undead, Emu with M (when he possessed him), o̶r̶ ̶Y̶u̶-̶G̶i̶-̶O̶h̶'̶s̶ ̶Y̶a̶m̶i̶ ̶s̶i̶d̶e̶s̶. I guess I'm looking forward on the different kind of human's struggle with their demons they can give, with Ikki and Daiji's being different. Now Ikki had to cope that despite constantly ignoring Vice, Vice is the right one this time of the family moment in the Minakami Onsen being suspicious, that Daiji's actually Evil and planned to ruin their moment. Though it's not only that, other than the Deadmans disguising as the employees with the staff working together with them, there are other potentially suspicious one, in one of Shiawase-Yu's regulars Ushijima family, who apparently planted a wiretrap on the desk where the siblings are discussing about the surprise for the family. So apparently, a good thing, not only the Igarashis, but other family also can get a focus, though it being executed well or not is another matter. Unknown which are their intentions, other than disguising themselves in a yukata, but if they plan to backstab the Igarashis, then they're really ungrateful. The Igarashi family's deal to keep their land is to open up a freelance consultation service with the son's connection to Fenix, as I realized (the reason they take cases from Yukari or such), and Fenix offering the family their protection in return... even including George and Hiromi joining them in the Minakami Onsen as well. George is back at his 'tamest' so far, like the ep. 1, acting as Revice's tips and tricks as well as fanboying over past Rider forms in Kong ViStamp, and tolerating Vice more, sort of giving him a guidance that he has to protect Ikki to keep himself from dying, which he does, but unfortunately his supernatural traits just phased through Evil, which is kinda funny too... now I wonder how he can actually eat people if him taking action leads into results like that. Personally, I think Hiromi here, despite becoming a Rider, is now a bit suspicious in jumping into conclusions too quickly that Daiji is evil... though Hiromi is already an impulsive person, at worst this can turn him into a self-righteous fighter who'd rather do things his way. This is also a result of George's manipulation on him though, albeit thanks to Kagerou himself (lmao), probably Ikki can clear things up to him as well. The Deadmans reveal their disguise in front of the family far quicker than I expect, but anyway both Ikki and Daiji have come across the Deadman trio before. I wonder why both of them didn't have a deja vu when "Tamaki" greets them, like thinking that he resembles Julio or such (or Vice claiming that he is Julio). It's understandable for Aguilera as she had shorter hair. I think the episode cements that the Deadmans are falling apart; Olteca being the serious and orderly one, the most 'obedient' among the 3 with him reminding others about Kagerou's deal. Aguilera who is the egostical type who hates being ordered (really, this part of scene really feels familiar after recently completing Decade with the "I hate taking orders" bit) which is obvious that she's the 'boss' type instead of 'leader', being a control freak that wants everything to go her way, gotta find someone who actually takes on 'leader' role to contrast Aguilera's bossing around. Though Julio just fanboys at the other's schemes respectively, either Kagerou's (who takes his part in strangling Aguilera) or Aguilera's. For Aguilera's henchmen fight against Demons... Demons got a new form Batta Genomix... and again... it's a Rider being given high-jump legs just like various phase 2 Heisei main Riders... and there's actually 2 of them in this series, both Revi Rex and Demons Batta. The finisher Batta Demons Requiem is one of the finishers with smallest amount of energy ehnancement... other than him going Mach in his kick. A bit of Spiderman vs Batman vibe before when Demons fought Evil, with Evil using bat sonars to repel him. For Evil fighting Ikki, Revice had new form in form of Kong with Fourze motif... and it specialized in tanky defense to caught up with Evil's super speed in his new form, also based on previous Riders like Revice, in Jackal with Genm motif... (I wonder which kind of villain they're taking, where Revice takes the main Riders). I guess Revice's Jackal using skateboard is a reference to Genm's biking too. Ironically, Evil displays super speed much better than Cheetah Deadman before, despite Jackal being said as 2nd fastest animal instead. The Kong's finisher ... launching their arms at the target. I'd like if that is used as their regular ability instead of a finisher, giving them ranged attack option. The AoE attack before was quite dope though. Kong can fight evenly.. but Evil is still not upstaged. Quote:

Y'know as soon it was revealed that the Jackal form had a different suit actor I knew they were going to have Evil steal it immdieatly for his form.
And also Julio "Gracias Deadmans!" after revealing himself and the pose he makes made me pause the episode and laugh. |
I posted my video review online yesterday for but man. This is the best episode of the season yet for me. So dense with plot. Character interactions, and I'm left with more questions than answers.
Jackal does seem more form fitting for Evil and feels more In-Motif than the Revi version of the form. The transformation sequence for Evil however...completely killed my want for buying the Driver in the future. Also, FINALLY Aguilera has more screentime. |
Eeny Meeny Miney Moe is probably one of the best standby noises of all time. I love it.

Some thoughts: I think when/if Sakura becomes Ryder, her demon will be funny, chatty and very girlly. That is, it will be everything that Sakura suppresses / is ashamed of in herself. She may also be a pervert, as Sakura seems to be trying to avoid romantic relationships the most. Also, given that we have a kaijin demon and a human demon, I will assume that its variation turns out to be a pet toy.
|
That fits with the demons of the other Igarashis.
|
I'm not sure any of that is something Sakura represses or has problems with... just about every scene she's had on her own so far is dealing with her learning about the problems of the wider world and what leads people to doing what they're doing, and trying to come to terms with the complexities of that. Otherwise she seems pretty secure in who she is

I don't got friends. I got family
(it had to be done) |
You know, I’ve had a hard time articulating myself about this show in previous weeks, but I feel like with this episode I’m finally at a point where I can sort out more of how I feel so far.
The show is pretty weird! There are a lot of aspects I can really appreciate, but then there are also parts that feel like complete misfires too. Conceptually, I really like both the drama and the humor. Like, everything with Daiji is interesting, but it is an awful lot to have so much happen to him in the span of 8 episodes. I don’t know enough about him, or heck, anyone at this point to get invested beyond the surface level of “Oh no, bad things are happening to this nice family!”. Similarly, I find a lot of the humor pretty good, but the delivery is often not great! Except George, who is always in peak weirdo comedy form. The show isn’t bad, but the plot beats feel more like episode 30 than episode 8 to me, so I hope they slow down and let the character get more low stakes moments more often. |
So I saw Evil's henshin on YouTube (I guess Daiji or Kagero or whatever has finally gone off the deep eend) and let me just say that 'eenie meenie miney moe' is not what I expected. George must be smoking some really good stuff.
Also, 'evil battou!' I'm sorry, but that's all I could think of when I saw him pull the sword from the belt. |

Otherwise, I honestly don't know how will the demons manifest, though it seems to exist in everyone, like Hiromi at the beginning, but his Rider form doesn't involve demons, other than the name, so dunno if Sakura's demon would be someone who interacted with her regularly like Vice and Kagerou, but personally I don't think that being funny, chatty, and girly isn't a negative trait (of which a demon seems to represent), so I'd think her demon may be someone who'd wish the worst or attacking anyone who has "unimpressive" or "undesirable" traits; from how she reacts negatively to many things regarding her family (but has limits where she'd compliment those who did well like Ikki at ep. 3), but didn't go for malicious route for them (where the demons may will, and for outside family as well). About romance, I concluded on the basis that her only child was embarrassed by the communication of her parents. Well, yes, "Tamaki" also considered confirmation. |

Interesting that you bring up Bima, since now that you mention it, I can see the similarity in the dynamics between the Igarashi and Bramasakti-Iskandar families, like with Daiji being the younger brother Dark (albeit as Kagerou) Secondary hero to the big brother protagonist Ikki, same with Reza and Ray. Topeng Besi got the last laugh though, being the one to deal the finishing blow to Rasputin. So I think the Deadman trio are playing the long game and will prove their credibility as a threat later, since their goal of Gif's revival and creating a world of devils is more ambitious than Kagerou's goal of killing Ikki. |

I just want to say that I loved the hotel setting this week. It's so nice to see some different locations on the show for a change.
