GARO
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...isenkilogo.png There's been no Garo thread yet, so here is one. This thread focuses on discussion on Keita Amemiya's Garo Series; from the original series, the special, the movie, to current on-going series, Makai Senki, this is the place to talk about it. For those who don't know what the heck Garo is, here's a quote from the opening of the series "Where there is light, shadows lurk and fear reigns. Yet by the blade of knights, mankind was given hope." The Wikipedia article offers a much more conclusive (and much less vauge) explanation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garo_%28TV_series%29 The show can be found in the regular places. As for myself; I really need to catch up. The last episode I watched was either the first fight with Jaaku or the one with the tree. I really enjoy the series, despite the fact that it can put me to sleep with it's less action-oriented episodes. EDIT: BTW, here's an important point that I forgot to mention; Garo is an Adult-Oriented Tokusatsu. Definitely not something to watch with the kiddies. |
I need to catch up on this show...

I still need to START this show :lol

Garo is one of my all-time favorite toku series. It has a really engaging story with interesting characters and a well-developed and very rich mythology. The action is pretty topnotch, too, with a lot of well choreographed wirework, especially in the unarmored fight scenes. I personally tend to think that the armor scenes are usually too short, but there's an in-story reason for that so I can deal - besides, when the armor is out for extended periods it just means that things are about to get crazy epic.
The visuals in Garo are another great reason to check it out, as both the hero and monster designs are really interesting and unique. There are also a lot of cool things done with the camera and backgrounds, leading to a lot of really dynamic visuals in the series (the Kiba dvd special is possibly the best example of this to date, as that thing was pretty much wall-to-wall awesome visual pieces). The original series aired in 2005 and was capped off by a tv special called Beast of the White Night. A theatrical film, Red Requiem, came out in 2010 and was released on dvd last year, quickly followed by a dvd special centered around the villain Kiba. The Kiba special took place alongside the last few episodes of the original series, but it also set up some plot points that are being followed up on in the currently airing series, Makai Senki. If you're a Rider fan, there are a lot of fun cameos that can be picked up on in Garo. The main female character, Kaoru, is played by an actress named Mika Hijii, who was the Orchid Undead in Kamen Rider Blade. The secondary hero of Garo, Rei Suzumara/Silver Knight Zero, was the Dragon Orphenoch in Faiz. The guy that played White Knight Dan in Beast of the White Knight would go on to play Taiga in Kiva. Garo's dad is also Gaoh from the first Den-O movie. Goro and Kitaoka from Ryuki show up in the original series and Kusaka, Tezuka/The First Ichimonji, and the police chief from W have all been in Makai Senki. One of the Horrors in the original series is also played by an actress that some of you might know from either Go-Onger or Japanese porn, whichever you watch more of. Garo is an absolutely amazing show and I cannot recommend it enough. Just don't try to watch it with your kids unless you're a pretty lousy parent, as it's got a lot of pretty graphic violence, some fairly creepy imagery, and more than a little bit of nudity. |
Yep, Switchblade pretty much filled in everything I missed....

Agree with everything Switchblade said. I was going in not expecting much, and it blew me away.

Garo is amazing and I'm more than a little disappointed with myself that I didn't watch it earlier than this last year.
On the other hand, it also meant I got to plow right through the original, Beast, Red Requiem, and Kiba right before Makaisenki started. |
The latest Tamashii Web Exclusive item for June is the demon horse looking thingy for Dark Garo, I will post pictures.

I started watching the series over the summer and really dug it, though I had trouble with my PC and streaming is problematic at best.
Just got some tips on where to find DDLs and thanks to a portable HD for Christmas I've picked up where I left off and man this show freakin rocks. |
So I've had the first 18 episode batch from TV Nihon on my hard drive for a while now and just now watched the first two episodes.
Okay, this show's badass levels are definitely on the high end. The mythology seems very unique, creative, and Mignola-esque, which, if you know me, you know I love that (sometimes I wish my life was drawn by Mike Mignola). The charcters have a lot of potential, the suit designs are fantastic, and the visuals, when they're practical, are awe-inspiring. The unarmored actions scenes are also great, with some incredible choreography and wire work. Now, if there's anything that I can complain about so far, it would actually be the armored fight scenes. They're a little too reliant on CG for my tastes, but that may change, so I won't call it now. But all-in-all, I'm digging this show. If only because of the mythology and how much it really does feel like it was made by a Japanese Mike Mignola. Should I get the Figuart of Garo (my wallet is laughing at me right now), he's definitely being displayed next to my Hellboy figure. |
