Kamen Rider Zi-O Episode 10: "Hawk Tiger & Grasshopper 2010!" Discussion
Geiz is worried that Sougo is heading down the path to become the tyrant of the future. Sougo agrees to work for Dan Kuroto- but both may have an alternative motive in mind...

Episode delayed due to annual sports, see ya here in a week OOO fans.
|
I like that people are rating the episodes before they air.

Ora has a mecha Castle Doran?
|
There was a mecha Captain Ghost earlier, so that seems to be a thing that Time Jackers can just do.

Not a perfect episode, but sure was fun! The pace was a little off the walls and the transitions were kind of jarring but overall it was a good tribute to OOO and added a little more to the main cast of characters.
Hino Eiji is still the same character we know and love, but he does look quite good in a suit. I wonder why the time change somehow made him become a politician instead of ending up a free-living traveler. He still went through the same experiences, as shown by the flashback, and his mentality is the same. I know that him being a son from a political family is something from the show proper, but it still is a bit weird to see. That being said, they nailed his character otherwise. And Hina's super-strength is still a thing, so that was nice to see too. It's just too bad we didn't get any kind of flashback or reference to Ankh despite the Tajador RideWatch. Also it was cool to see Masamune Dan referenced and it is confirmed that the person Another OOO killed last episode was indeed him. Seeing Kuroto in his original outfit was nice. Along with the 2010 OOO flashback, it's really nice to see the production crew trying their best to match the clothes the legends wore in the original timeline proper. These aren't great callbacks and they are very brief, but I appreciate the attention to detail to have the characters wearing the clothes they wore in that respective episode. I guess I'm okay with the lack of communication last episode. This time Sougo tried to explain how he wasn't trying to work with Dan but Geiz still attacked so it makes it clear that the outcome was going to be the same either way. The episode ends with Geiz leaving so it does shake up the plot slightly. The Castle Doran Time Majin is interesting and I wonder if they will ever explain why the Time Jacker's are in the possession of different Rider machines. The actual CG fight was pretty cool this time, from OOO Majin to Tajador Combo's Giga Scan Time Break resembling the original Rider kick. And OOO Armor is awesome and I loved how Sougo used it properly. It says to me visually that he is finally starting to take things seriously. One thing I missed was the OOO soundtrack. It's a bummer we didn't get to hear each show's respective leitmotifs in previous episodes but it was the most obvious here. OOO without ska is like cereal without milk. Next up, Gaim! The stinger at the end was a little odd due to the lack of narration but it was cool to see the original locations and Kouta himself back. And Kaito and the Helheim Forest are returning in the next episode as well. So far the ratio of original main and secondary actors reprising their roles in their tributes is 5/7, which is actually very good. Finally, 10.5 is once again genius. They basically straight-up acknowledge the fact that the characters were acting a bit differently because the script writer was different for this arc. It's so self-aware. Absolutely brilliant. |
I view Episodes 9 and 10 where Geiz and Tsukuyomi needs to have a wake up call regarding how they handle Sougo. It's obvious that Sougo cannot be defeated by brute force and they had to resort what Tsukuyomi had done and that is to teach Sougo to become a nice ruler.
Also, I just want Sougo to use the full abilities of the other riders. So far, only Geiz uses the Ride Watches he has to their full potential. I mean imagine Sougo having for example, Build: Accessing all the weapons Kamen Rider Build has such as using Drill Crusher, Hawk Gattlinger, 4Koma Ninpoutou, Kaizoku Hassyar. Ex-Aid: Using rocket arms much like Gekitotsu Robot and Shakariki Sports or using the full powers of Drago Knight Hunter Z. Fourze: Using Billy the Rod, Hee-Hackgun and any other of the Switches. OOO: Using other of the OOO's combos. |
We got two Sougos next episode! But is the other possibly... Oma Zi-O?
|
I don't mind the net/side episodes are meta, but they need some good explanations sometimes instead of poking fun of the show laziness just to sell toys. Eiji was overshadowed by Dan again in his own tribute and the extra tajadol watch without ankh Is just clear money grab with generic bad cgi robo battles. So far most of the fights are easy without any sense of danger under the same formula with the bad guys taking a back seat. Next episode might be a one part Gaim, but I'm ok if it delivery what 2 episodes can't and it seems there's more effort next week along with a twist with zio. There must be something more innate to the king thing and his fighting prowess and competency to beat Geiz, a man fighting for his entire life other than he's a Main character. I have a feeling the king thing will be a pun or joke for future return of this character after the series is done. So far, 555, wizard, and exaid are the best tribute in terms of references and tone to the original series such as hope and despair.

Next episode, it looks like they go all in with Gaim. I'm surprised they keep both Kouta and Baron's return a secret despite all the filming leaks. It might be one episode since we need to hurry to pace since the next quarter of toys shows we might be ditching tributes and legend powers in favoring of Zio as his own show. I guess no more gokaiger like cameo from toku vet. |
Hey everyone, guess what time it is!
https://i.imgur.com/ek81IOp.jpg Time for me to praise the heck out of whatever genius thought to replace the pictures on OOO's chest with more katakana. None of the other Ride Armors so far have designs anywhere near this clever. I love it. I loved the episode a bit less, but they did a pretty great job with certain elements. Eiji is definitely the best guest star we've gotten yet. He gets a good amount of screen time, acts very much like himself, and even directly teaches Sougo a lesson he learned in his own series... which, of course, in this version of history didn't happen, but that's fine. Maybe becoming a politician led to similar character development, right? At the end of the day I don't think there's much point in critiquing the time travel logic in this show unless they seriously mess something up. On the flipside, however, KurotOOO's was just lame here. It feels like they already had their fun with him last episode and he's only still around because the plot needs to be wrapped up. I mean, Woz straight up tells him at the end he was only useful as a dude for Zi-O to beat up. I appreciate that they probably wanted to make sure he didn't detract from Eiji's role, since he was the one who didn't get anything to do last time, but something about the way the plot petered out here felt a bit off. As for Sougo's Kabuto-esque "betrayal", I think they did a solid enough job justifying it. Sure, anyone with a brain probably wouldn't need to go to such lengths to find out "egomaniacal madman = bad king", but like I talked about in the thread for the last episode, Sougo being a bit "off" when it comes to things like that is reasonably in character for him. More important to me is that rather than just brushing off this incident as another wacky adventure, we actually see this has a lasting effect on Geiz, and even if he'll be back with everybody soon, him walking off is an interesting development. All in all this episode was something of a mixed bag, but I definitely had fun with it. |
I think Sougo might be the most unintentionally creepy protagonist in Kamen Rider. He doesn't show much emotion than just a smiley face, even when he's about to fight someone.
Anyway, Fruit Jesus & Bananaman next episode. |
I think that my prediction of Woz being bad is going to come true. I bet he'll wait til Sougo gets all of the ride watches then will steal them all for himself then Sougo and Geiz will have to get them back.
|
For some reason, Sougo is really growing on me. At first, I just thought he was incredibly naive (and he still is). But he's also just weirdly cheerful all the time. It's pretty fun to watch, if I'm being honest.
Woz, however, continues to be my favorite character in the show. He's probably the best hype man you could ever have, and I love him casually talking shit to Kuroking at the end. |

I'd still say Fourze was best in that it showed the world and tone of the show really well. Gaim tho', can't wait. I'm glad the break got in the way earlier than later so much now. |
Loved it.
And that Time Mazin Tajador vs Castle Doran was extra inspired considering the design history relation between Tajador and Kiva. The cheekiness of this series certainly really plays well to its strengths, and really looking forward to the story developments too. The growth and detail oriented aspects are really building to some interesting payoffs. Really like how it plays up Sougo as empathetic and wanting to talk things out first without jumping to conclusions too. Interesting how it's starting to play towards bringing Tsukuyomi around to that now too, whereas Geiz is hellbent on his own path. |
I liked this episode a lot more than the previous one. I really wish I could stop running so hot and cold on Sougo and just settle on an opinion about the guy. I loved Eiji, though. It sucks that he didn't transform or anything, but I liked how it feels like he really taught Sougo something. I think he's probably been my favorite cameo so far.

I think Geiz will join the Time Jackers if he wants the future saved.
Hope someday he'll find out who Oma Zi-O really is. If it's someone else, or if Sougo really claims of changing his fate. |
Is Eiji's actor on a tight schedule or something? I was bummed that he didn't appear in 10.5.
Pacing issues aside, this is a good episode and more of OOO tribute than Dan Kuroto's. But really, Kouta's cameo at the end felt weird thanks to no narration. |
Seems like we'll be getting some Geiz backstory soon hopefully.

Better do more with those two alumni considering helheim is back, which is weird since it's kind of the villain of the series. They don't bother hiding toys nowadays with kuroto and tajadol. The fights are getting boring with how formulated it is and how competent zio is. It's like hina super strength without explanation. At Least kouta was playing and improving as a kid. Zio suddenly can fught impressively and kick a post apocalyptic survivor ass more than twice easily without the aid of woz. Woz is just the narrator on the peak of breaking the fourth wall like dead pool anytime now. I liked there's a story to zio, actual toku alumi taking time off from their own busy schedule to do guest star cameo, but the whole time traveling and changing their personalities ruins it for me. There got to be some secret in why zio is special because he's pretty much nobita from doraemon before he became zio. Also, why are another riders all so weak even with Dan? No challenge or tension at all for selling toys. |
