Watched it live, for a change.
Momo, Deneb (Deneb's mustache!), and the rest of the Den-O gang were awesome, as always. That Grand henshin was just bonkers. All the little animated Riders... Wow. I'm kind of floored. It was a great battle and the Den-O portions of it were brilliant. I really can't wait for the subs. |
IWAE! For this truly was a grand final form debut.
Seriously though for two weeks and wondering if we were just going to get a repeat of what was shown in Episode 39, this episode delivered and then some. The Den-O moments were really great, Momo-Woz and Dr. Deneb were some highlights of mine. It was definitely a fun tribute to Den-O. That being said Grand Zi-O, the transformation was pretty cool, I love the idea of all the Riders appearing encased before their fully revealed, and them being put into doors that then attach onto Zi-O where they do their pose and turn to gold. But Zi-O's abilities in this form are insane and I love them. Being able to summon a Rider in any form from any point in their timeline is amazing. You get standard kicks like Build and Kuuga, but then you get stuff like OOO coming from Episode 3 and Den-O from Episode 18 and that's what makes me love this form. Then you've got stuff like the finisher and I really hope that Zi-O will continue to cleverly use these Riders like this debut because this definitely made me like the form a lot more than before. Also Yuuto's comment to Sougo at the end has me slightly concerned, especially in regards to the next episode. |
And like the last episode, we can see tell what episodes the past Riders and weapons are coming from. The past Den-O comes from episode 18 of his series, while Build’s sword (I don’t remember its name) comes from episode 28 (since it has the Full Fullbottle set to Rabbit and Rabbit already inserted). Though it’s confusing that they used action figures for the All 20 Time Break, instead of CGI.

So that episode synopsis ended up being, uh, not entirely correct...?
Anyway this episode was good and Grand Zi-O is the best form ever |
So this looks like to be the last tribute episode (Since Drive's in the movie :( ), so the rest will be focused on the "plot" (well what's resembling a plot anyway)

Rejoice, for now we have the most highly opinionated, highly overpowered armor of the entire Heisei era Riders.
Den-O is consistently one of my favorite Rider series, purely because the interaction. Plot was a hot mess, but the characters really carried the show. This episode was definitely proof. Climax form just made my day as did Zeronos. Even the two parter person in trouble story line gave me all the nostalgia. I got some serious chills with the Grand Zi-O henshin. Probably because it's literally EVERY driver intro from the era. Also, I had to chuckle at the fact that the watch is bigger than the entire driver! Some poor kid is gonna spin that sucker around and wind up in the hospital. The animation of each rider I thought was super reminiscent of Gokai Silver Gold Mode, but at the same time, wow. Every Rider kick and weapon at your disposal and then some. He even reversed the time flow and went back to double down on OOOs. Super hardcore. Overall, this was a great episode. I can wait for Drive's movie piece, but there's a lot of holes that I'm not sure will be answered, but with an upgrade like Grand, we'll see what happens to Sougo. |
Absolutely loved it, and the implication that there is another Sougo timeline going on at the same time.
The suit looks, a bit like a mess, but I kinda like it just for the ability it comes with. Also that insert song. |
Another Den-O, even discounting the previous episode, really takes an absurd amount of punishment here. I get that monsters can only be finally beaten by the big Finishing Attack, but it was pretty ridiculous how he just kept getting back up after about a dozen or so hits that each should have ended him!

Hey everyone, guess what time it is!
https://i.imgur.com/AiBzhQp.jpg Well, hopefully it won't be time for Sougo to spend an entire minute just transforming from here on. Still, I can't deny that looked pretty cool. This episode is great, but it's definitely getting by on the fun factor more than anything. There's not a lot of substance to the plot here, and Yuuto deciding to cut Sougo some slack seemingly just because he saw him talking nicely to a guy once feels pretty weak, honestly. Zi-O II is still the form debut to beat, but this one goes in a different enough direction that it's still cool. The upside of the Zi-O elements being underwhelming is that the Den-O characters really get to shine here. Momotaros' personality especially is spot on throughout, and it's extra impressive that they even found time to get in bits like Deneb's habit of wearing terrible disguises. The stylistic touches throughout the arc like using Den-O's format of showing the dates instead of Zi-O's were also cool to see. Grand Zi-O is clearly the thing to talk about with this one, though. Just like Trinity, the show did a great job selling me on a redundant design. The ability to use any Heisei Rider's powers seemingly any way Sougo wants, be it summoning them for a finishing attack or using their weapons, feels appropriately, well, grand. It's a straightforward but fitting idea for the final Heisei Rider's final form, and it's positively loaded with potential for great fanservice. I was a little blown away when he plucked a dejected Den-O right out of the climax of episode 18 of his own series. It's a hilariously specific choice to make, and the whole reason he's doing it is a clever workaround to get Den-O in on the fight without breaking the rules Zi-O has set for itself. Although I have to ask, is Zi-O on his own forehead literally the first time he's even done that clock hands pose with his fingers he's always doing in promotional images in the actual show? Toei wants us to believe that's his signature gesture or something, but I can't recall a single instance where he's done it until now. |
I know for certain that Zi-O has never actually done this advertised 'signature pose', because I've been on the lookout for it since the beginning of the show!

Late to the party.
Really great tribute to Den-O. Woz reciting the cold-opening narration. Momotaros possessing Woz. The use of the Mole Imagin to explore some of the original shows themes and motifs. Really great stuff. Plus, the debut of Grand Zi-O doesn't take away from the Den-O stuff. We get a full-fledged Climax Form and Vega Form battle. I love Momo's interactions with the main cast from travelling in Geiz's Time Mazin to tugging on Sougo's face. Plus, that Den-O half-hearted "ore sanjou" callback was glorious. Yuto basically pulls his cold but caring act and Deneb gets to be as hilarious as ever (that Doctor disguise!). Only problem is we should have seen more of the other Imagin, especially during the end part. I laughed when Sougo basically left Momo hanging at the end there. The plot itself was appropriately Den-O-esque. I thought I couldn't care less about these victim of the week characters but I actually almost teared up during the resolution. Really sad, but touching. Reminds of Den-O's first episodes when Owner broke the rules to let the guest of the week travel to the past to see his dying mother one last time. Damn Den-O knew how to tug on the heartstrings. The Zi-O developments are low-key, but damn if the visual effects weren't good. Grand Zi-O is hella extra and that must be the longest transformation sound and sequence I've ever seen. I love how all the little murals on his body materialize and his powers make for some great call-backs. Seeing Kuuga, Build, Gaim and OOO ripped straight from their original timelines was insane. Plus he can use any of their weapons? Holy shit. The "All-20" finish brought a creative combinations of forms. Minus Genius, they were all forms we barely saw. Suika Arms, GataKiriBa, Pegasus? Not bad, Zi-O. Oma Zi-O vs Grand Zi-O, or at least a tease for it, was a strong way to end this arc of the series. |
I just want to say I find it funny that the DX Den-O Ridewatch is the one that comes with the Daizer... but because it's the last one obtained and they immediately combined into the Grand Zi-O Ridewatch, it's the only one never seen on the Daizer.
