Power Rangers Movie Opening Weekend Worldwide - $59.2 million
From the Hollywood Reporter, totals for worldwide opening weekend are at 59.2 million.
|
That good, bad, or meh?
|
We still didn't beat Beauty and the Beast during the first week. It's still not a bad start and I hope we get a sequel by 2019 or 2020.
|
Original expectations had this movie making between $30 and $38 million. So for it to hit the $40 mark domestically is a big "omg, don't sleep on this movie" type of thing. You will see a lot more coverage for it next week with Hollywood sites writing click-bait articles examining WHY the movie did better than expected.
The international release is slightly disappointing. For Power Rangers to be so huge globally in terms of being viewed in hundreds of other countries, to work in only $18 million internationally, or less than what the movie did here in the US on Saturday, leaves me a bit wary. Ideally, you'd want the movie to break even and not be a "loss" in terms of financials for Lionsgate and Saban Brands. At the same time, when the movie does better than expected (ie: "it didn't flop as much as we thought!"), the argument can then be made that this movie is setting up the next movie which will be bigger, badder, and make more money. So who knows, really. Depends on what Saban and Lionsgate want to do. |

Of course, toy/merchandize sales could factor into it too but I think a sequel is pretty much assured. |

I'm still going to wait and catch it on video/streaming, personally, but I will probably make an actual effort to watch it when it comes to home video instead of maybe just stumbling into it on cable in a couple years. |
I hope week 2 will do better then this.
|
We are getting a sequel, but I am curious how it did in Japan.

Ghost in the Shell and Boss Baby are coming out next week. I see a lot of ads for those movies over the past month. So PR will probably drop to #3 or #5 next week.
|
And that's a safe bet. ;)
Power Rangers was a good movie. But wasn't the type that'll make me want to go back and see it 5 more times. We all know that those CGI children flicks reign supreme at the box office. So Boss Baby should have a pretty good opening weekend. |
It's been interesting reading the difference of opinion on this movie's performance between the forums (not just PR centric ones) and industry websites. The industry is pretty happy with the results and feel it could launch a series while forums are a lot more analytical in their pessimism.
The big thing to note is that the production budget of the movie has already been completely recouped by Lionsgate. The studio operates in such a manner that it often sales off the foreign distribution rights for the movies they make, and Power Rangers is no different. In the end, Power Rangers only cost Lionsgate 25% of the budget plus the advertising budget. The movie opened to 18.6 million overseas and even though Lionsgate gets very little of that money, it's still not super fantastic. Lionsgate was able to avoid a loss by having foreign distributors help foot the bill, if this movie continues to operate at a loss for those distributors, it's less likely they'll want to participate in any kind of sequel. When you get into that situation, you run into the reality of needing this movie to do very well in the US because a success here means they can go forward with a sequel and be fairly confident of not having a loss on their hands. Also keep in mind that the movie still hasn't opened in five major territories - South Korea, Japan, France, Spain, and China. There's currently no scheduled release date for China, but I have to think it could follow in Pacific Rim's footsteps and do decent business over there. Japan's take on the movie is going to be fascinating to watch. Will it be seen as the ultimate potential of what Sentai, a major part of Japanese pop culture, can become, or will it be seen as a another typical Hollywood movie? For now, the movie is definitely overperforming in the states, making $10 million more than the studio's predictions, but because of the way Lionsgate operates, this movie has to either A) Find a way to be a huge success in those big overseas markets or B) Manage to have strong legs and bring in more than it's currently expected to gross. At the moment estimates for the movie's final take are $100 million and I would wager a guess that a $150 million US take could be seen as a huge success. Unfortunately, unless it can hold onto its audience strongly, I'm not sure that happens. Its one big advantage is that it's the only big budget boy centric movie on the market for a while. Long story short, the movie will make money. In fact, by next week, I'm confident the rest of the advertising budget will be covered. The question going forward will be, is the movie going to make enough money to justify a sequel? There are a ton of factors to keep in mind, not least of which is Lionsgate hurting for a new franchise and if they see potential to do something better with a sequel, that could justify it for them. But, again, this also depends of the foreign market vs how well it does in the US. Quote:

Godzilla 2014 did pretty well in Japan. I think PR will probably do pretty well over there too.

If we get a sequel, I hope they pick a good release date. I would hate it suffer the same fate as the recent Ninja Turtles live action movies (Out of Shadows would have done better if they release it not in June).
|
I think you have to be happy with the opening weekend numbers. I did have a thought in my mind the movie would flop. Now over the course of the next several weeks you hope it chips away and gets closer to / over the $100 million number.

I think it was pretty good- it reminded me of Thor and IM 1- because their sequels had alot more action, but they're both really good movies for starting points- so I see the same process possibly happening for PR.

40+ for the film this last weekend is very good. Keep in mind that a lot of movies do 40+ at a similar budget... we are just used to Transformers, DC, Marvel, and Star Wars doing insane money. Also important is the audience scores. The film is getting A ratings from moviegoers and is getting good word of mouth. Conversely, Ghost in the Shell and Baby Boss aren't getting that good of word of mouth (Baby Boss is... okay, word of mouth-wise, but Ghost in the Shell is just getting beaten up due to whitewashing claims as well as people being turned off by the style). If I had to guess I'd say Beauty and the Beast will remain #1 next week, Power Rangers will end up with a strong second week to have it barely edge past Baby Boss, and Ghost in the Shell will flop HARD, being seen as a Speed Racer-like failure. |
It is going to be interesting to see how Japan reacts to this movie.

There are still plenty of international territories where it hasn't premiered, many of them huge box office earners (cough--China--cough), so the weak international take this weekend isn't too much to be concerned about. Quote:

Movie is officially approved for release in China, should hit theaters there next month:
https://www.powerrangersnow.com/powe...ming-to-china/ that's a HUGE international market which should bring in some decent numbers... |

Warcraft was a flop over here but more than made up for it in the Chinese market. |
So did Golden Compass and Pacific Rim as well. I do think PR will probably make back it's budget in the US. There was a decent amount of kids in the theater when I saw the movie. So I hope they like the movie enough to buy the toys.

Someone explain to me how making money with movies work.
I've heard that breaking even is considered a flop. I've heard that making double is basically considered breaking even. I've heard that making double is the only way to turn a profit. So with a $100 million budget, what does $59.2 million mean to Lionsgate? I really just don't understand because I can get like, 10 different answers to how much a movie needs to make to turn a profit... |

Current projections indicate a 65% decline in its second week, dropping to 4th at the box office.
