Can I just say I was smiling the entire time when Aruto got ahold of the Hopper Blade and beat Gai with it.
|
This entire episode can be summed up as:
Gai got out-Keikaku'd by a Humagear and the Power of Friendship. And I love that I can just say that. And also: I suppose the real Metal Cluster Hopper were all the friends we made along the way. |
The sharp twist at the end with the actor humagear
Gai can actually feel it stabbing and twisting in his heart |
Knew that the Progrise Hopper Blade would be the way they control Metalcluster Hopper, though I didn't see that it'd do so by absorbing the Cluster Cells into it. That's interesting. It was definitely great see Gai get taken down a few pegs.
Also, looks like Jin's coming back, my dudes, and with his new form. I guess that will be the topic in the magazine scans for March. I wonder with Horobi's return and Jin's apparent resurrection if the work competition part of the arc is over, 'cuz it feels like it'd be something that throws a GIANT WRENCH into the whole thing. |
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Metal Cluster Hopper is now a run-of-the-mill "I hit people with my sword"-form. How nice. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted for two weeks.
Gotta say though, the special effect team really got to blow stuff up this episode :lol The episode seemed really good, but I will wait for subs to properly understand what's going on with the HumaGear. Also, is that the "Burning Falcon"-form in next week’s preview? |
This was a pretty cool episode. Seeing all those previous Humagears rally behind Aruto and help him take control of Metal Cluster Hopper was really nice.
And of course, seeing Thouser get beat up was very satisfying too. |
Not gonna lie I had tears in my eyes when all the Humagear that interacted with Aruto and the flashback of his interactions with them gave me the feels.
|
I do like the fact that all the humagears Aruto got to know contributed to getting Metal Cluster under control, like it was one big pay off for the first half of the series. I don't think Horobi escaped by himself, but I think Fuwa unconsciously set him free.
Now with the two best villains back in play, hopefully it means we get back on track with the plot and the end to this padding. |
Ok...That's good so far, I like what they did with all the Humagears.
But here is my problem : bringing back Jin and Horobi feels like all this competition thing was only fillers... |

But the sword has metal cluster thorns. and I think those are CGIs?
|
Yea, but it's a lot smaller than the giant spikes and shields that Metalcluster Hopper had been using. From here on out, it'll probably be the regular slashing CGI effects or spark powder.
|
Gosh, that montage of all the Humagears remembering the goodwill Aruto showed them was cheesy as heck but it still brought a tear to my eye. And it was cool for the new upgrade weapon to have an origin and plot relevance beyond just "it came with the new form," I can't remember the last time Kamen Rider did that.
It would've been even cooler if MetalCluster looked any different now that it was under control, like being less spiky or even just having red eyes instead of yellow. But oh well, that's just my minor quibble. |
Aruto suffered from so much shit during his tenure as the president, and seeing that his suffering actually brings good to the people he interacted makes it so worth it.
|
Man, it feels good to see Gai get the shit kicked out of him. I will never grow tired of that.

Besides the ZAIA Spec and the AIMS equipment, has he made anything that is truly his own? All he did was piggyback Korenosuke's genius, tempering with Ark's programming, creating Metsubojinrai.net, creating the Zetsumeriser, Force Riser and all the other shenanigans. Look at his weapon, the Thousand Jacker, most of his finishing moves requires him to "hijack" Hiden tech to launch powerful strikes. Even the foundation of his abilities, the progrise keys, are not ZAIA tech. Now that we knew Horobi got triggered when he realized that Ark got screwed around by Gai, and him now questioning Fuwa about whether he really has free will, he will have a bone to pick with Gai, The only reason for us to have 5 Riders featured in the OP, might be because they have a temporary truce to take down Gai, or better yet, because Horobi has said it quite clearly that he will submit to the will of Ark, if Aruto manages to reform Ark, Ark can once again be a force for good. This guy claims to be great, but end of the day, he's still tapping "quite literally" on a dead genius's works. Why else would the metal cluster hopper key look like a gloved hand covering the authorization port? Its probably Ark's middle finger to Gai by implying "You can't jack this" |
The last shot of Gai is he's standing up, clothes all tattered, eyes filled with vengeance.
The next time Gai going Kamen Rider might be reminding us of The Hopper Bros. |

Maybe I just didn't notice it before. Good episode. Nice to see Thouser getting slapped around finally. |
Last episode was another one that honestly left me a little cold, but I refrained from talking about it in large part because these two episodes are from a new writer, and I wanted to give both parts a fair shake before jumping to any conclusions. And I mean, this is a new writer, not just to Zero-One, but to Kamen Rider (and tokusatsu?) in general from what I can tell. So I'll say one thing for Minato Takano upfront: there's no noticeable drop in quality here. This is a solid set of episodes, and this back half in particular, I actually quite liked.
There's the usual amount of cool Zero-One action, first off. Little things like that tracking shot of the Authorise Buster smacking Thouser that go a long way. The central thrust of the plot, the HumaGears validating Aruto's gentle heart by paying back his kindness to help him score a major victory over both Gai and the Ark, is executed pretty much perfectly, too. I mean, I don't know what the deal with all those Progrise Keys was (I have a feeling P-Bandai is going to want me to buy them soon though?), but that whole montage, it's great. Really touching to see all these minor characters back in some capacity. It's like the climax to the Fourze movie, but on TV! Cool! I'll also have it be known that I like the way the Progrise Hopper Blade is used even more than I thought I would. The transformation here seems to imply it very specifically prevents Metal Cluster Hopper from doing the whole swarm thing, making that visual symbolism I was talking about a few weeks ago an explicit part of the show's canon instead of just something implied... unless I'm wrong about this completely and they decide to use the swarm shtick again later. Still, it's a cool visual, and the subsequent fight with Aruto busting out a catchphrase for the first time in a while is crazy satisfying. Bonus points for using that jazzy music from Shining Hopper's debut. That's pretty much tied with Vulcan's motif for my favorite track in the show. So it's a really good episode! Nothing to complain about, right? Right? Well, truth be told, I still have a lot of misgivings when it comes to Zero-One's overall structure and pacing right now. This is a good two-parter, but like a lot of Zero-One since Thouser showed up, it feels a couple steps away from being as great as it could be. I don't know why this one didn't involve the ongoing Hiden/ZAIA competition, for one. Judging by the preview, it kinda sounds an awful lot like this entire plotline is going to fall by the wayside without hitting any real climax, so I'm counting on Yuuya Takahashi to do what I'm still reasonably sure he does best: make me feel like a jerk for even complaining once I see what he does. Maybe the rest of the competition will intersect with the return of MetsubouJinrai in some extremely satisfying way, with Aruto having to balance out these two huge threats, one to his company, and one to the world or whatever. But as it is, I'm once again feeling there should be a bit more drama going on. Fun fact, during the week leading up to Metal Cluster Hopper's debut, I was actually strongly considering the possibility that said episode would actually end with Hiden losing the third round, and the competition as a whole, as some kind of result of Gai messing with Zero-One like that. Like, maybe we'd have this arc that really digs into how the heroes dig themselves out of this seemingly hopeless scenario. I still think that would've been cool? Going in the opposite direction, I feel this two-parter might've worked even better as a definitive conclusion to the contest with Hiden winning. Having Aruto turn Gai's own sabotage against him through his faith in the very HumaGears he so despises being just about the biggest possible defeat for him as is, throwing on the extra weight of Aruto also winning some big tie-breaker or the like could've capped the plot off very nicely. Getting even more minor than that, it would've also been nice simply to see these episodes carry forward the whole idea of Aruto kind of losing himself in anger from the last two. Turn that into some kind of bigger thematic thing. It's just a lot of "what if" scenarios I can't help myself from imagining with Zero-One as of late, and I'm not totally sure why. I love a lot of shows that Zero-One is just as good as without ever asking more of them, so why I keep feeling so uncharitable towards it is strange, even to me. Maybe I just felt the first 16 episodes were so good it set too high a bar. Like, even though the show is still giving it its all, that just isn't enough. As though the series is at 100%, and I want it to be at... Oh no. Am I... am I becoming Gai? https://i.imgur.com/sceeLoB.jpg Okay, I'm gonna go reflect on this for a bit, and hopefully next time I talk Zero-One, it will be more positive than negative. |
Honestly I think a lot of viewers (me included) would be fine if the competition stuff unceremoniously dropped from here on out.

It's saying something when this 2-parter which is taking a break from the competition arc and felt a bit like a filler, feels more refreshing. |
This dialogue is great:
Fuwa: "So you all just bow down to the will of the Ark? Pathetic." Horobi: "Aren't you the same?" And then the confused Fuwa tries to make sense of it by figuring that Horobi meant his job working for AIMS and by proxy, ZAIA. But we all know what Horobi actually meant. It's pretty obvious at this point. Something happened to Fuwa, presumably when he used the Assault Trigger. The clues are all there: him getting used to its side effects, his migraines when seeing the hooded figure and the disappearance of the hooded figure after he confronted them in the warehouse. I hope we find out what exactly happened soon and I feel like we will with Jin supposedly returning next episode and Horobi escaping. The rest of the episode was great and felt like a proper plot episode. I loved seeing all the Humagear from the first arc of the show return and a great explanation for how Aruto gains control of Metal Cluster Hopper form. When was the last time we got an episode making a new weapon relevant to the story? Enji Matsuda fooling Gai was awesome and the fight at the end was incredibly cathartic. Aruto kicking Gai's ass legitimately was a highlight of the show so far. |

I'm all for Rampaging Vulcan at this point, but it is cute how they solved Metal Cluster Hopper's problem. It was the perfect karma jackpot and both the characters and audience knows it
