Karan Ashley Speaks Out On Super Megaforce Reunion
1 Attachment(s)
Hold on to your hats because this is going to bring some interesting discussion!
As you may recall, Karan Ashley (Aisha, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) rejected the offer to return for a cameo in Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Fans have been polarized on their opinions - some think she, along with others that rejected the offer to return, should have done it for the fans. Others have expressed sympathy knowing that Haim Saban is relatively cheap and that he, and the production company, should have done more to bring back original cast members for the reunion. After these polarized opinions have each been expressed on her Facebook page, Karan Ashley felt it was time to address the whole situation on our Uncensored Radio Show with her co-host Jeffrey. The clip, courtesy of nightmere10 on Twitter, can be found below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2umsc_Ml7u4 WARNING. CLIP CONTAINS USE OF PROFANITY. There you have it, straight from the mouth of Karan Ashley. I'm sure all of you have some thoughts, comments, and concerns of things brought up in the clip - I know I did as a fan. Go ahead and post your thoughts and comments in this thread. With production seemingly only wanting 10 previous cast members to return and now others such as Blake Foster getting the axe on reappearing we assume that the Super Megaforce casting news should be dwindling down to a minimum. Thank you all for sticking through as we hashed out who was returning and who wasn't. Share your thoughts in discussion! |
Note: I removed the off-topic posts about the new rumor on the cameo usage and created it's own thread.
http://www.tokunation.com/showthread.php?t=46180 In the mean time, let's keep this thread about what Karan Ashley had to say. |
So this is really really long... any chance of a summary from the people who've listened?
|
Nothing but respect for those two. As I've said before fan expectation is just ridiculous, and Saban's treatment of his cast sounds just as ridiculous.
|
EDIT: Retyping because my post was a jumbled mess, haha
|
I do find it funny that she mentions all of these great projects that she is doing (photography business, radio station, and one she's about to sell.) but she says its not enough for her time what they are paying her. I'm not defending Saban by any means I bet they are being cheap about it. But at some point these people have to say..."is it worth it for the fan?" And I'm sorry, but when some of these people say that they do things for the fans, but won't take a hit for them to enjoy something that also might get their names back out in the broader public eye...really? Sorry for the rant, I feel there are equal parts of bullcrap to spread between both Saban and people refusing to go.
Obviously there is an exception for David Yost ( referring to the nonsense he dealt with his lifestyle), but honestly, I just want to see it and have it be done, because this is in no way "The biggest 20th Anniversary we could expect". |

It's pretty much Karan saying that she was pretty excited to go, but when it came down to it, based on her own personal life and her business, she would lose money over the deal. She said for five days, they would get paid for two, and those two days weren't worth it. She went on to say that working on Power Rangers was an opportunity, even though the actors weren't paid enough and she felt (as do many of the other actors) that if you're going to be making so much money off this, that the time/money ratio should be more worthwhile (paraphrased.) She also said that a few of the actors were gung ho, excited about going and were on board, regardless, and the casting department never responded back. A few members of the production company even had personal contact with the actors, saying that it was "great to have them back" only to reject them weeks later. I wasn't 100% sure on this, but I do believe that the actors waited and waited and finally touched base with Saban (the production crew) to find out the definitive answer if they were accepted to go back or not, not Saban letting the actors know, the way it should be. Karan also mentioned that if they had ten or so hand-picked that they wanted, why invite everyone? Instead, just go for the ones you want, and if they can't do it, go down the list. She said pretty much everyone got a message about doing the cameo, (those that could be reached) and it was all the same generic letter that we've seen. Karan spoke about her role on the movie, and how at it's red carpet debut, she stepped out of the limo and saw Haim Saban. She greeted him and he didn't even really know who she was, which led into the fact that it was never about the actors, but the toys and the money that Saban makes and they could easily be replaced. Apparently this was a common threat on set. Lastly, the thing I was happy to hear the most, is that Karan took a stand. She was more or less thankful for her time as a Power Ranger, but for the people who say that they should do it regardless, for the fans and forget the money, (since it's only a "few episodes", which according to her it's not even that) that she does so much for the fans already (including that radio show) and that the fans stating such things need to realize that life and priorites come first (again, paraphrased). One of them, either the gentleman (who is pretty upset to the fans that want the actors to come back regardless) or Karan stated that those fans should be ashamed of themselves. All in all, I agreed with everything she stated and it was what has been stated all along, but in further detail (and colorful metaphors, by the gentleman though) and it gave us fans a bit of light into the real world of being a Power Ranger. After all, this is the real world, where superheroes don't actually exist and no one owes anyone anything, especially if they already do so much as it is. PS: She also touched on David Yost quite a bit, saying he was bullying and called a "faggot" on set quite often. He's starting to realize that his fans do love him though and that's why he's doing more con appearances, but all the money he gets from those cons, has gone to charity. All of it. So, for people to think that Yost should go back, for the fans, after those conditions should also be ashamed of themselves as well. Quote:
And the public eye thing is BS. Power Rangers isn't relevant except for it's adult fanbase and the kids. It won't land them any acting careers, especially if the role is just a cameo role. EDIT: I also agree with Kickback. Co-host was a bit rude, but the point is valid. He's angry for Karan, and rightfully so. |
This is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. It's what I've been saying for weeks. Too many people are bashing these actors when they don't have all the facts. These people have gotten screwed over, mistreated, under paid, and jerked around by Saban before and there's no reason they should put themselves through it again for pennies.
And David Yost is my hero. Billy was mine and my wifes' favorite ranger as kids. Without getting political I love the guy and what he does and his donations to charity make me respect him even more highly. |

Oh, I also want to know who the fan was that emailed her. They need to be greased and spooned I say! Greased and spooned! |

Okay, retyping because I was all over the place in my original post.
This clip is going to empower both sides of the argument. Those who can't see that there's more to this than money are ONLY going to focus on the money comments made in the clip, because Jeffrey repeatidly states that Saban is worth 3.4 billion dollars. That's the unfortunate part about the clip because to those with heads who can't see logic are going to totally look past all the VALID, LOGICAL points Karen and Jeffrey made and focus only on the parts where they discuss how little the actors were paid in the beginning (and currently I might add). On the other hand, a major kudos to Karen Ashley for coming out and saying what she said. Haim Saban and the production company with Saban Brands in charge of Power Rangers have totally mucked up Super Megaforce and RUINED a great 20th Anniversary season. To treat the actors of the last 20 seasons the way that the production team treated them, even by doing invitations and then never getting back in touch, and never replying to people who rejected, is unprofessional in the highest calibur. It's becoming more clear to me just how much Saban cares about the fans of the show (not the little kids, but the older fans) ... and it's coming across loud and clear that he DOESN'T care about us. He DOESN'T care about the actors that work on his show. How can he, when he doesn't even know which actors are playing which characters? In the end, looks like the only one who doesn't care is Haim Saban. NOTE: The only part I took offense in is when Jeffrey referred to the people unhappy that Karen and the others aren't attending as "kids without jobs who probably still live at home in their parents' basement". There's really no need to be inflammatory when you're trying to quell a rather incinderary situation in the first place. |
Quote:
Also, there's no need to be inflammatory either, when you're already pretty much winning the argument anyway. |

I really don't fault any cast members that can't afford to make an appearance. It makes sense for people to take the financially safer option for them, and if they don't want to risk their jobs that does NOT mean they hate the fans.

I'm glad she finally came out and laid it down for everyone. It really is just awful how Saban treated, and still treats, these people. It's really kind of clouded my opinion on Ranger series, to think that Disney was honestly being more fair and respectful towards the actors than Saban. (if Bridge's actor is to be believed, which I don't see why not)
|
She pretty much said EXACTLY what I said in the thread that got closed. The same people who are bitching about them not doing the reunion would be bitching when they only get a 15 second shot of the character from the neck up.
Think of the money saban has likely made off of the legacy toys and tell me how Rhett "wasn't in the budget" straight BS |
This whole thing sounds like an epic pile of shit. I wonder if this will effect the profitability of Power Rangers in the long run.

I'm glad she put some context to what's been going on. It's a shame and the fans and the actors deserve better.
|
Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, but it is slightly relevant, and I didn't feel it warranted it's own thread.
Why do people hate the Disney Era so much? I've only recently got back into the fandom in the past three years or so and my actual viewing experience of the show since then consists of a handful of episodes of Samurai, RPM and most of SPD, so all this hate toward it kind of goes over my head. What did they do that was so terrible? |
Quote:
Yes it's unfair to hate all of Disney's Seasons, just as it is unfair to hate the entire Kalish Era and Bruce Kalish himself. It's why I hold all seasons to a first and foremost base standard of "Best Megazord Design." It's something the Sentai can't be used in for judging characters or story, nor BoA for modifying in domestic release. I do not like DaiBouken/the DriveMax Megazord, nor do I like the Sixth Ranger's mecha, the land battleship, or the non-drill accessory mecha. And that's what I use to help make a season's praises or scorn affect my going in to it. Jungle Fury is often forgotten sadly, and it did do quite well with managing the Sentai footage and story. I'm sorry, but Gekiranger, WHILE VERY GOOD, has to many two parters early on. The Kensei giving the Gekirangers new weapons didn't NEED to be stretched into two parts, but it wasn't detrimental to the overall season. Goseiger it hated by so many, but considering it's placement in the series and a more "generally simple and nice" story, not to mention simple toys and card gimmick, I can see how some would not like it. But I don't. I see it as a nice season with a catchy and very nice theme song, great toys, and an awesome movie exclusive mecha (:D ). But that is just my opinion. And the superficial is how I begin examining a season. That IS how kids are drawn in. Why do you think Zyuranger was picked for the first season of Power Rangers? Because dinosaurs are popular with kids. Long story short: Disney just hit a big pothole and people's nostalgia and love of the Sentai exasperated the problems too much. |
Quote:
It's because of Disney that the series was moved to NZ. Disney pretty much went every day saying that PR was on the chopping block. Disney aired new episodes in the most eclectic of times and wasn't afraid to cut airings for any other special. It was Disney's handling on the series, rather than the quality of it themselves. |
After hearing a good chunk of this, I don't blame Ashley for deciding not go to. Same with Cardenas and anyone else. Sure, what some actors/actresses said before may have rubbed folks wrong with their reasoning, but the way Ashley explained it, made a lot more sense.
Hopefully the 20th anniversary celebration will still be exciting but I can't help but feel that what Saban did tainted the fun; it's not going to be as exciting as it could've been and it's his fault. |

Most of the adult fans will still probably ride the "the actorz r teh suxx0rz cuz tehy wud not go 4 teh fanz0rs!" boat. |
Quote:
It is Power Rangers TWENTY but Saban only cares about selling toys, the majority of the people buying the toys are young children who have possibly never even seen a season before Megaforce so they are the specific area of the audience who DON'T care about the PR legacy. As such Saban knows he can put zero percent into the legacy season and still achieve his personal goals. He doesn't care about his adult fanbase and why should he? As much as MMPR nostalgia on the internet will trick you into thinking the adults put money into this franchise, most of the nostalgia hype around MMPR aren't by fans at all but sad adults trying to look alternative. Really the truest fans are the kids watching the reruns, buying the toys and playing Megaforce in the playgrounds, they are Saban's bread and butter and they are who Saban will focus on. It hurts but I'm just gonna have to accept it. |
Yes this is what I wanted to hear from one of the actors I admire her so much now just of that alone.
|
I laughed most of the way through as i totally agree with the sentiments she expressed. How dare people demand they 'do it for the fans' when its obvious that these people have no concept of how real life works, jobs and businesses come first, the sense of entitlement in the fandom is staggering at times. these actors spend all year making appearances for the fans, year after year, they give back so much. Good for Karan, getting on the net to set things straight is a brave thing to do as she risked raising the ire of the more idiotic, selfish and irrational fans.
|
While I'm not defending Saban, how much of this is really his mismanagement? From what I gather, the man spends more time in between flights from the States to Israel (which is his 2nd home I'm guessing) so there has to be someone else calling the shots.
|
Thought it was interesting that Jason David Frank clarified things at Dallas Comic Con, mentioning that Power Rangers Productions was going to pick ten people. So even if all 60 something people replied and said "YES I WANT TO COME!", if they weren't on the list that PRP was wanting to bring in, they were going to be denied.
Makes me think that Mike Chat, Cerina Vincent, and anyone else is about to get the "Sorry but no" e-mail. |

Karan Ashley, Walter Jones, Steve Cardenas, and David Yost turned it down for a variety of reasons - some stated money (and then poured on the disrespect from Saban side of the story), while no one faults David Yost for choosing not to go. Erin Cahill wanted to go but couldn't because of other obligations. Same for Erika Fong. |
Shame the rest of the Samurai cast wasn't to busy to make it :lol

It's not "Dekel Brands" or "Tzachor Brands." I'm sure the latter many, many people are thankful for though. |
