Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 5- "The Nine Ultimate Saviors!"
The Orion Team bands together to begin the liberation of Earth. But will they be strong enough to take down the planet leader?!
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
Gonna wait for subs on this one, but loved what I saw.

Interesting to note, the show has actual story arcs.
On their website, Toei broke it down like this: Episode 1 through 5 are the prologue Episode 6 onward will be the "Earth Liberation" arc. Gives me hope Earth won't be the setting for the rest of the episode. |
A certain melon-armored warrior returns to the genre as a guest actor in this episode.

Also yes, I too hope they leave Earth in later arcs. Maybe not permanently but at least for a good 13 eps for a change. Heck, why bother calling them Uchu Sentai if all they do is mope around Earth all day? :lolol |
man, Xiao Longbao is good at playing dumb. He is the one who sent Stinger to be Jark Matter spy.
|
When a show still has me hype to see the next episode despite seeing the raw, I think it's safe to say I like it.

It was alright.
If these first 5 episodes were the prologue, then I expect the real meat of things to get started. And it's beginning with the pegasus armor and a dance class. Naga looked so hilarious when he was trying to break dance that I want to watch the episode on that virtue alone. As for the episode, I wanted more from Champ. We still don't know the circumstances behind why Stinger "killed" his creator. It seems next episode won't delve into that, either. Anyway, so it turns out Stinger was a spy all along. How quaint. I wonder what other secrets Xiao has. I'm quite curious to know where Stinger's subplot with Scorpio is also going to go. It's implied that he's still alive, so...Possible evil Kyuranger? After all, he did betray his planet with an evil smirk across his face. ...Though, if I know my shonen animu, I'm pretty certain he did it for a good cause or something *Shrug* Just speculation, nothing solid. If this arc is called the Earth Liberation arc, then it gives me hope that they'll leave the planet soon (Well..."Soon" being relative...). Action was a mix of good and lame. Par for the course for Sentai as a whole. When the Kyurangers can use their more unique abilities (Like Raptor's flight or Stinger's tail), then it's a complete joy. When it's Lucky swinging a sword, I'm much less impressed. KyurenOh continues to disappoint. Stinger's add-on is just...A laser? And it's not even unique because Champ can just fire a laser, too? Jeez. Hell, even if it did have a whip style addition, Chameleon, Hebitsukai, and Balance all have that, too...Man. For a robot with so many possible configurations, I'm actually a little disappointed that "Sword" is the only actual unique addition. |
For the first time in a while we have a really good Sentai and a really good Rider series back to back. This is going to be a fun year. If Kotaro ends being Koguma Skyblue then we'll have our first human ranger on the team.
|
Seeing all 9 rangers transform at once made my weekend. I can't wait until the other two Kyurangers debut!
|
While I do like the idea of those two kids possibly becoming Kougama Sky Blue, their acting didn't really leave me hoping they do :lol

This episode sucked. Stinger was a spy all along? Get the fuck outta here. What a lame way to handle this character. Champ kind of accepts things even though we still don’t know what really happened with Stinger and the Professor is also weird.
And then the big shit: They are going to stay on Earth for the rest of the series now, right? Oh come on. That was the most interesting thing about this show. Now it really is just your run-of-the-mill crappy Sentai show. Why even give them a space ship? Why even make it space themed? I know they did this before but still. Different locations with CG backgrounds would’ve done it to keep the illusion up, and that can’t be more expensive than having to needlessly render two Voyagers who apparently don’t have physical suit forms. Add boring characters and lame fight scenes with forced mecha fights and you have the typical Sentai shit I can’t stand. If this show can’t get a grip until episode 10 I’m out. |

Me when I start watching an episode of KyuRanger:

Also, I swear I will stop watching before episode 10 if they don't stop spamming that script for Lucky shouting his catchphrase. It's more grating than Ghosts' Onari and all of Fourze combined. |

Dang, I see this show is still failing to find much of an audience around here. I thought this was pretty awesome, myself. Shocking, I know.
Stinger being a spy makes a ton of sense to me, given that: - Where the heck else did he get his Blaster? - Kyutamas actually don't like bad guys, that's not just Lucky being stupid. I can't be like "OMG I totally called it!", but I'm also terrible at speculation, so I don't know. Obviously the show sort of needed him to be a good guy sooner rather than later anyway, and they're still playing up the loner angle, so it's not like he isn't still a little unique. We'll see how his whole deal with Champ plays out. I'll go on record right now as saying that if it turns out to just be "I didn't actually kill that guy", that'll be genuinely lame, but his dialogue in episode 3 seemed to suggest he DID do it, so who knows. As for Champ himself, it seems pretty clear he's more begrudgingly accepting Stinger's help than actually being okay with it, so again I'm not really sure what else people would expect here. |

And if they are made, it would be easy to explain that Stinger happened to come across a facility where they are build and took one simply because it appealed to him as a weapon, without knowing it's needed for a Kyuranger transformation. Quote:
Why can't it just be that these Kyutamas react to strong willed individuals? That would leave room for their alignment to themselves. But then again this is a kid’s show and that's apparently an excuse for rules which define what is evil or good depending on who's got the tamas instead of character development. And yes, with tamas I mean balls. I mean Stinger has still lots of interesting stories to be told with his brother and all, but man why do they need all nine assembled in the first 5 episodes anyways. I mean I know why, merchandising, but they could’ve just worked with the basic 5, upgrade to six like usual and have the other 3 more or less part-timers or in case of Stinger actual antagonists at first. To be honest they could’ve easily rolled Stinger and his brother into one character and then had some fun with it. Instead of "He was a spy all along". Fuck you Kyuranger, that’s so stupid. |

Anyway, I'm done. Probably shouldn't have been reading this thread before trying to watch the episode, but I got about five minutes in - the point where the little kids show up and start throwing rocks at the monsters - before I decided that I really just didn't care to see where this went and there are far more interesting things I'd rather devote my time to than this underwhelming pile of disappointment. Switchblade out. |

I hear the narrator talk about these legendary magic balls that give people the power to save the universe from evil and I'm like "Awesome!". I see a giant robot fight in the last three minutes and I'm like "Yup, that's Sentai for ya'!". I see the show explicitly about 9 dudes assemble all nine dudes early on and I'm like "Yay, this is what I signed up for!". Nothing about any of that bothers me. If you wish the show was fundamentally written a different way, that's fine. I totally agree there's a lot of good narrative potential in your suggestions (I'd love to see an evil Kyuranger), but I'm totally alright with what the show is doing instead. If you aren't, then I hope you have fun with whatever you spend the extra 22 minutes a week doing if you decide to drop the show. Although if you're tired of repetitive mecha action, there's this little show called Go-Busters... :p |
Something that's begging to be explained is the Kyutama themselves. Lucky's and Raptor's just materialized out of nowhere, while Balance and Naga's were part of some rock.
Meanwhile Xiao has a whole fucking bag of them. There are a lot of questions that are raised. What if a character received a Kyutama, but it's just a weapon? Does that mean they're special, but not special enough to actually be a Kyuranger? Are weapon Kyutama only given to Kyurangers (With how Xiao acts, I'm 100% certain he already has his personal Kyutama, hence his literal pile of weapon Kyutama, and just chooses not to act right now)? If Kyutama can only be used through their special gear, what is the point of them? Assuming their some sort of legendary trinket, why isn't the power accessible as soon as their chosen user gets them? The more I think about this series, the more questions are raised. And no, I'm not being cynical. I'm 100% positive at least the first and last of my questions won't be addressed in the series. Anyway, I'd say this episode is worth watching simply because it finally gives you the payoff 5 weeks in the making of having the full team of 9 assembled. ...Then again, I'm the type of freak that gets more hyped up for the role call rather than the fight scene itself, so take that for what it's worth :lol |

-Lucky and Garu's introductions could've been split, giving them (Garu especially), more time to really cement their character beyond basic traits. -Hammy wouldn't be left so basic and bland as the series rushes to explain everything. -Champ's backstory with his doctor could've been set up a little earlier. It could've established Stinger before his proper debut as well. It would give them a little history and the audience would get to know more about Champ. -Spada would be able to do stuff. So far, the only characters that have really gotten a chance to spread their wings and develop over the course of these 5 episodes were Lucky and Raptor (Of all characters). Everyone else had their limelight episode (Sans Hammy) where we got a little on their history (Or, in Spada's case, his protective tendencies with Raptor), and then they become a set piece. I know I'm judging things over 5 episodes, but things would've been so smoother and better paced if they held off on 4 of the rangers' introductions. |
Hold it. Why is everyone harping on me for asking that question? I was simply asking his opinion/reference on it. I wasn't trying to challenge it or anything..

When scans of the promotional catalogues hit the scene I thought we would get two teams - one with 5 and one with 4 members and they would be featured equally, or rather the 5 team would be our main focus and the 4 team would drop in every now and then. Or maybe the 4 team would actually work for Jark Matter? That could’ve been fun. I'm just bored that the nine members don’t matter since they're now a team anyways and will get additional new Rangers just like every other show. I wish they would make something special with their large number of players. Quote:
Sadly Kyuranger seems too mediocre at the moment for me to give a damn. |

AHA!!!! You admit that it's currently at this time. Which means that it could get your attention better down the road. :lol |

I like "Special" role calls. Shit like the double roll calls in Vs movies, or extended roll calls from the large teams like Kyoryuger or Magiranger. I didn't mean it as if I'm chomping at the bit from the episode to episode role call :lol My bad :lol |
