Decade vs. Zi-O: Which is the Worse Tribute Series
I've been having this debate with myself recently and I'm curious to see what other people have to say. Obviously Zi-O still has a long way to go, but I think it's far along enough to have this discussion. So we now have Decade and Zi-O as our two Heisei anniversary shows and both deal with paying tribute to the shows that came before them. Sadly, both have some problems with how they handle those tributes.
Decade went in the direction of largely eschewing the original actors in favor of new characters in stories that felt like the writer had just read a few bullet points about the original shows. Still, we at least got some consistently good action scenes where the alternate Riders transformed and fought against/and or alongside Decade. Zi-O, on the other hand, has really been trying to bring back original actors whenever it can, including the main Riders whenever possible. What it does with them has been pretty underwhelming, though, as the show's premise is built around them having never been Riders now. At best we might get a brief transformation scene, but at worst we see the character show up for a couple minutes to hand over their collectible toy and then disappear. So, which is worse? Seeing different actors but having all of the old suits back in action again or getting the original actors back but not really doing much with them? |
Decade. The alternate universe bullcrap ruins the entire point of it being an anniversary season. Suits mean nothing to me if they are attached to alternate universe characters I don’t care about.
Zi-O on the other hand has the actual actors and their universes back. Yes, they could do more with them, it sucks that too many actors appear without even becoming Riders again, but man, if they do it right they do it right. The Ghost tribute of all things is perfect. I hate that show with a passion but the Zi-O tribute was gold. Coincidentally, Decade was also there. But yeah, Decade sucks all around as an anniversary show; Zi-O could do better but at least has the right idea. If they keep going like this we’ll have a really solid anniversary show once Phase III concludes. |
Zi-O is SO FAR the worse of the two. Decade has PLENTY of issues, but it was fun until the end,and at least the actor had a magnetic personality to go along with Decade's attitude...Zi-O is like old Mayonnaise to me..but I will watch just because

Yeah, this is no contest. I'm with Kiwami on this one. Decade's fanservice was all total fluff. Even a couple minutes of screentime for Shinji is infinitely more impactful than seeing some random lawyer or whatever walk around in a Ryuki suit for two episodes.
I just don't even think it's a fair fight. Decade was Heisei Kamen Rider's first big attempt at banking on nostalgia, and it's clear Zi-O is the culmination of the lessons they've been learning since then. |
Decade's tributes were mostly great, so Zi-O. Both shows are fantastic, though.

See, here's the thing that gets me about Zi-O's cameos vs. the AU Riders from Decade: the Zi-O cameos are basically AU Riders, too. Sure, it's the same actors, but they aren't really playing the characters they played on their own shows (for the most part). Eiji wasn't a government minister, Shinji wasn't a paranoid recluse, Takumi and Kusaka weren't... I don't know, laundry detectives? (still a little unclear on what the hell their deal was supposed to be) Souji Jenkins or Whatever may not have been Souji Tendou, but at least he was still Kamen Rider Kabuto.

I like Decade as a character, I also really like the card system etc.
But it is not a good season, they clearly had issues production wise for it as well considering how it ends, with multiple and very likely story parts cut as they ended the season quite early. Zi-O has issues, but it spends far more effort into doing a proper tribute to the past riders overall, they are no longer riders since their time has been stolen, yet they put effort into making sure the characters developed in a way that fits far more with their characters and their past. Not only that Zi-O even throws in easy to miss nods such as poses, hand motions, variations of past rider attack shouts and so on. Decade did little to none of that, even if I like Decade, I cannot in any way call it a better tribute season when put next to Zi-O that shows far more effort into what many would consider minor things here and there, and clearly Zi-O is putting far more effort into making an actual storyline for itself. Zi-O is in no ways perfect, it has issues, many of which are possibly caused by the deadlines returning actors have due to other contracts, and it is clear that a few people are quick to judge the season overall over a small part instead of the long run so far, that is at least how I have felt when reading the comments on the episodes for this season. Not many want to talk about what they might be setting up, instead a lot of negative comments are used on what is not even finished story arcs, honestly I think Zi-O is getting a harsh view from people due to the wrong reasons. For the record, I was one of the people VERY negative towards this season, mainly due to the head writer for it, a worry I am sure others also had. But with what we have had so far, I can in no way say that Decade did a better job as a tribute season, Zi-O is around the halfway point-ish, and has already done far more then Decade did in terms of honoring the past. |
Zi-O is better than than Decade in terms of story, characterization, and anniversary season (tribute series).
At least Zi-O have more interesting story progression and returning actors. Decade is really interesting from episode 1 to episode 23. But since Shinkenger Tribute, the story become really boring. I stiill think Shinkenger Tribute is really unnecessary for Decade main plot and story. The Apollo Geist as main villain is too generic and really boring and I think Apollo Geist is one of worst villain in Kamen Rider history. Even the other villain like Adel from Kamen Rider Ghost are billion times better than Apollo Geist.... I also really dislike Decade cliffhanger final episode... |
