Beyond that, I can't imagine trying to discuss a show I fundamentally disliked. It may happen some day, but... like, Ghost. I came here because Ghost was driving me nuts, but as soon as I started talking about it and writing about it, it became both easier to see its strengths, and more fulfilling to discuss them. Crabbing about Superhero Animal Teen Dance Parties or Double First Acts or whatever is mildly cathartic, but it's so much more interesting (to me, if no one else) to celebrate what a show is doing well. I don't always succeed at that, but it's more reflective of how I see these shows now. I just like Kamen Rider, you guys. Quote:

So basically what is your favorite form ride? Your favorite Alternate rider story? favorite character? Favorite villian?

FAVORITE FINAL FORM RIDE: Decade as Decadriver It was almost Den-O as Momotaros, because that is literally what Den-O turned into, a Momotaros delivery mechanism, but I honestly love both the visual of Tsukasa turning into his own Henshin device -slash- the best Henshin device, and the thematic relevance of it. I talked a little bit about it when we covered the All-Riders movie, but Tsukasa's Final Form being a way to pass on other Rider's powers and stories... YES. That super duper nails Decade's place in the franchise. FAVORITE ALTERNATE RIDER STORY: Hibiki That ending. There're a million little smart things that story does -- from how it casts Kaitou as the story's Hibiki-substitute and recontextualizes the original show's generational struggles -- but the ending was what I wanted the original show to do, and they didn't. The ending of the Hibiki story, with everyone in the cast jamming out a song, was something the original series version of Hibiki (the "good" version of Hibiki, even!) fumbled, so seeing it put right in Decade was... god, it was like a little gift, just for me. FAVORITE CHARACTER: Diend Best actor in the show by a mile. His spotlight story wasn't great, and there're a string of episodes where multiple writers couldn't seem to figure out why he was on the show, but I completely bought Kaitou's character. His chemistry with Tsukasa was a frequent bright spot, and rote scenes got elevated by his intensity and charisma. Series MVP, for sure. FAVORITE VILLAIN: Social anxiety The actual monsters and whatever, I couldn't care less. Narutaki was interesting for about one episode, when I could read a thematic purpose to him. Apollo Geist was a fun roadblock, but not much more than that. Dai-Shocker wasn't great. The individual story villains were nothing memorable. (Kaitou's brother, maybe, if he even counts.) But the internal struggles for our heroes were what was always compelling. This was a show about making friends, and it's portrayed as the terrifying ordeal it can feel like in real life. Nearly every story is about Tsukasa fighting to be understood, or accepted, or... like, just be seen. I feel like a lot of us have been there, felt like the world was actively rejecting us? And then here's this show about superheroes, going through the tokusatsu version of that psychological battle. That was the recurring, season-long villain I was most interested in. Very curious to hear everyone else's choices! |
FAVORITE FINAL FORM RIDE: Blade
It just worked out well aesthetically. FAVORITE ALTERNATE RIDER STORY: Ryuki I love the alternate take on the rider battle regardless of how silly it is. FAVORITE CHARACTER: Narutaki ONORE DIKEIDO FAVORITE VILLAIN: Decade He was the hero who survived long enough to be the villain. |
Pretty much agree with Die's answers. Though I do have a couple picks of my own.
FAVORITE FINAL FORM RIDE Den-O was great, Hibiki's was a masterpiece, Decade Decadriver was fantastic, but something about Ryuki becoming Dragredder is a visual I particularly enjoy, though I don't know where I'd put it with the others mentioned, just brought up the ones that stood out to me the most. FAVORITE AR RIDER WORLD STORY It's difficult to pick, since Agito, Hibiki, Ryuki, and Kabuto were some of my favorites. I feel Agito and Hibiki are tied for this one. FAVORITE CHARACTER While Kaito was a fun character I enjoyed watching, AR Yuusuke Godai, when he had big character moments were some of the moments I really enjoyed this season. Also, honorable mention to Momotaros, who doesn't count because he's from Den-O, which I've yet to see. FAVORITE VILLAIN This is a hard one, since none of them left a big impact on me (I'm still going off memory), but a few picks would be: Worm as AR Tendou, something about the idea he masqueraded as his sister's brother and frames Kabuto for killing him is something I kind of liked(?), or Monster DiEnd from Shinkenger World, I love the idea of a monster becoming a Rider, who even went against his masters just because he had cool new powers. |
Since this is Decade related, I just have to share this. Masahiro Inoue sings Decade's Opening, Journey Through The Decade.

He's not like professional quality, but he's not by any means bad. |
And here's Decade building a FRS Decade kit. :lolol

I'm only a few minutes into Inoue's build, but I am already more angry at him than I was at Tsukasa over the entire run of Decade. Why is he cutting parts off the runner with a pair of pliers?! Or, like, a chisel?! CURSE YOU, MASAHIRO! |

And it also came to my attention awhile back that NonActionableFansubs was doing a scrub of the show, using both Earthly's' and RiderTime's' subs. As such I grew curious: Given the ups and downs of RiderTime's' subs, which are the ones that I used to initially watch Decade, could a new and improved sub at all help in getting me to understand this show at all? The short answer is... no, not really. Having rewatched the two episodes in particular with the new subs and cross referencing a few key moments, I can say that, while NFA's' subs are definitely overall better in terms of timing, font, and just translating certain bits in general, that really didn't do anything to save these episodes for me. Sure, certain bits of information are made a bit more clear, but the overall package is still essentially the same, and as such my big gripes with not only these two episodes, but Decade in general still hold true for me. If anything, I ended up coming out this rewatch disliking these episodes a little bit more than my first viewing. As an aside, while RT's' subs do certainly have their issues, there are still some key moments that I think were done much better than NAF and Earthly, for example: RT: https://i.imgur.com/EgYSGS4.png NAF: https://i.imgur.com/oU2FrWa.png Granted, I still have zero idea what the hell that line is even supposed to mean, but atleast RT's' sounds like a proper non-sequitur that rolls off the tongue alot easier while still getting the idea across. So in the end, yeah, I don't see myself rewatching all of Decade anytime soon, if ever(improved subs or not). But this served to be an alright thought experiment for me in the end. |
NAF's scrubs are mostly about putting the existing subs on Blu-Ray versions I believe
