Digital Games
Sony
Make sure you have 2 accounts separate. One for Play Station 4 One for Play Station 5 The reason for this is that Sony won't let you buy the upgraded edition of a game as you already have the game in your account. I tested this with one game which was how I found this out. Buy PS 4 games on that system and same separate for the PS 5. The second thing happened with Metal Gear Solid collection. What happened in this case was I got the game on PS 3 as a bundle disk but the PS 3 had to update and I would rather not want to risk my PS 3. Metal Gear Solid 2 And 3 are PS 2 games. So in this case buy the games for the system they were first released on. This is a software issue. This is why I have PS 2 game disks mainly. Even if new Gen systems reissue the game the game might not be compatible with the current Play Station. |
Microsoft
Microsoft is phasing out pre Gen systems in their stores and only supports current Gen systems so this would be a case of buying the game disk. You also may have no choice but to buy the current system as that will be the only one Microsoft supports. Previous systems are already being discontinued in their store for digital Games. |
Bear in mind as well that the PS store may with out warning discontinue access to digital games. This may be due to licensing arrangements with other companies who make the games.
Sony has done it with movies and TV shows. As for games if you have the game disk it allows you more time to finish the game you're playing. For me PS 2 games are a major thing in this case. I'm playing Final Fantasy IX for instance which in that case Sony may at some point no longer be able to license the games should Square Enix move to another company. True Final Fantasy was Play Station exclusive but this could change so to play it safe I'm finishing the game on my PS 2. Other game lines may see a similar fate which makes game disks a viable option should we lose digital access. Access to the game is important given you pay 22 bucks minimum. (Depending on the game.) |
Example of License change
Final Fantasy I - VI Nintendo And SNES Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy XVI Sony Play Station This is a case in point when game lines can change companies. Given Final Fantasy a game platform will no longer be able to carry a title digitally. So in that case wait to see who gets the game before buying a digital copy so you don't lose access to it. It's hard to tell who has rights to digital games as a home system these days and you can end up double dipping if you're not careful. For Tomb Raider I have the first 9 games on Play Station 2. Other platforms have released this franchise but I like to have a central place to play them on. Some games will continue on another system not released on Play Station X Box or Wii. So you end up buying all of them so you can continue the franchise line you're playing. I got lucky with Tomb Raider so the switch would be to go PC with the 10th game. |
Android Games
Mobile games will be on some console decks for cross gaming. The problem is you have to be connected to wi fi all the time for sync up to work and even your system has to be connected to wi fi |
These posts about gaming definitely make me want to go outside and touch some grass

But they ARE very interesting and informative

Double dipping
To avoid a double dip wait till they release all the content they're going to this way you only have to buy once. I did this for Mortal Kombat and bought the XL edition which had the extra fighters. For Final Fantasy XV get the Royal Edition so you get all the expansion games. The only time I would say double dip is to have the game on multiple systems this way you can get the upgraded version for PS 5. |
Game Saves
With a digital game most games use a cloud save feature. In this case for cloud saves connect up to Google Play for Android Games then you can use your account on a new phone. Company cloud saves are a forget about it. I had run into this with Yu GI Oh Duel Links and had to restart the game all over. I never use company link up. With Google Play you don't lose your spot. Due to the G Play cloud save I was able to finish up a bulk of Dissida Final Fantasy OO before the server shut down. |

Additionally, backward compatibility can be tricky. For instance, the Metal Gear Solid collection on PS3 required an update, risking the console?s functionality. Since Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are originally PS2 games, it?s best to purchase games for their initial release system to avoid compatibility issues. This strategy also applies to reissued games on newer consoles, which may not be compatible with current PlayStation systems. Hence, I prefer owning physical PS2 game disks. |
