This was a ok-good episode. Proper introduction to Towa and Bamba and they're the typical "mission is more important than saving lives" kind of guys. So obnoxious anti-heroes (more so with Towa as he isn't afraid of insulting others or the fact he's willing to sacrifice a human life to stop a Minosaur). Despite being the youngest, Towa is the more authority figure/voice of the bro duo. Bamba is a bit quite-ish, seems like a actions speaking louder than words kinda guy.
Really good character development/moments with Ui. Although I feel like this was too quick in the series for this to happen. I would've thought this kind of situation would be later on (closer to the half way point). While i liked the development for Ui, I think Asuna considering Ui important as a friend was really forced IMO. The RyuSoulgers have only known her for 1 episode (about 1-2 days in series), so unless Asuna has a very trusting personality, it's quite a reach because the plot said so. Mech fight was ok. It didn't feel as grand or exciting as the first two episodes mech fight scenes but it was an ok-simple fight. Overall, enjoyable ok-good episode IMO. |
So the brothers are being dicks as of the moment, as expected. I thought they might end up facing a minusaur that they couldn't beat by themselves and needed to be rescued by the other three before they come around but from the preview it seems Towa might change his mind. I'm thinking Bamba might be harder to convince.
I'm still noticing that they're putting more premium on the mech battle than the ground battle. I hope down the line they'll be able to balance the two better. I still prefer ground battles even with how good the mech battles can get. |
What Tow and Bamba have done until now ? Kill every minusaur host they found ? Bamba is more stoic about this but Touwa now is just a psycho.
I think they should have focus on Melto OR Ui OR the brothers this episode and not all once. Ah, and it's time for Toei to change the "turned to stone" filter because it has not aged well. Honestly I can't remember last time I saw a decent "turn to stone" effect in toku. |
3 episodes in and things seem to be safe and standard. I know people say to "just stick to it, It'll get better", but I'm finding it hard when it just seems to be standard. LuPat, even though it's not one of my favourites, made it feel fresh and different in its first few episodes.

Okay, I'm starting to think I might be cutting this show a bit too much slack. I'll just preface this by mentioning I am having my fun with Ryusoulger. I'm not actively upset the way this post is probably going to come off. It's just a show, right? But it's a show where I have almost nothing nice to say about its quality after nearly a month.
The lack of Kamihoriuchi here must've pushed me over the edge or something, but I'm feeling pretty nasty towards this episode even thought it was by far the best written one yet. There's an actual structure to the plot, Melto gets a bite-sized character arc (which is all I'm asking for this early), and it's about Ui, which automatically makes it way better. Mostly because Ui is the singular character in the entire show I'm actually endeared to so far. You know who I'm especially not endeared to? The trigger-happy jerks who immediately jumped to murdering her as a solution to the monster of the week. I mean, what the f***? It's bad enough Towa and Bamba mostly wasted screentime in Super Sentai Strongest Battle, but their first appearance in their own show has me hating their guts. I figured they were going to be the cool, competent members of the team, but inadvertently driving a teenage girl to attempt suicide is about as incompetent as you can be when your job is protecting people. I'm just not sure what's going on with this show or my feelings towards it. I should be happy there's some friction between the team members, because conflict spices the show up, but even though it doesn't exactly seem forced, something about the way this and almost everything else has been executed irks me. If Towa and Bamba are so happy to kill Ui here, what does that say about what they've been doing off-screen? What the heck is up with the Kishiryu running away? Why did they do that? Do they like living in caves? Did Tyramigo just really want to see a zoo? When did they run away? Because we never even saw that part. They were dramatically posing with everyone at the end of the premiere and then the very first seconds of the next episode they're just gone. Why did that need to be a plot point at all? Does this show have cold opens or not? Because it's done the opening three different ways in as many episodes. I could go on like this forever. I'm not sure how much of that is nitpicking (except the bit about the opening, which is obviously not a big deal) or what, but all I can think when I watch this show is how I'd rather see them handling things then the way they are. I think the ending theme is literally the only thing in Ryusoulger that I'm completely satisfied with. I'm trying to stay upbeat about it, but if the quality keeps refusing to improve like this for much longer, it's going to become a problem. |
I was thinking this is a ui and blue focus episode. He shows his negative side and ui insecurities respectively, but we're introduced to 2 "asshles" team members. It doesn't help that green is doing that stereotypical he's better than you while looking down on you expressions.
|
Yeah, it's gonna be really difficult to warm up to Green and Black after this and it's a problem I have with a lot of redemption arcs in Toku. They were grinning with glee at the prospect of ending their problems by killing someone; that's gonna take some damn good explanation before I feel comfortable with them.
|
To be fair, Black's expression was never a stoic look, and his reasoning was solid.
Green was just a douche, though, yeah. |
Disclaimer, due to a lack of time, I'm going off the raw seen during the livestream of the episode.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unfortunately this episode is also brought down from a Good to Ok to me on the basis of giving us our second look at the brothers... and its them trying to murder Ui for the crime of unwillingly getting turned into the Minosaur's host. My first thought is, if this is how Black and Green are, then Ryusoul Gold as comedic type 6th ranger confirmed?/s But in all seriousness, that was a really dick move for the brothers to do. Yeah, in episode 1 we had Kou ready to bash Ui's head in with a sledgehammer named "Mind Wiper", but that was a gag centered around defying the audience's expectations of how he would wipe her memories, and I didn't hear any laugh track for this scene. It's also not helpful the show doesn't portray any sort of nobility for this, even if killing the host is the right way to stop the monster, you'd think the show would've spun it like "The brothers are prepared to mercy kill a host if they're willing to die to stop the minosaur's growth.", but no we get "Ui's the minorsaur host?!" "Oh don't worry, I've got this. draws sword". |

can yall not understand character flaws and set up for growth |

It's another thing entirely to cross the line into instantly wanting to kill an innocent person with not only no remorse, but with a smile on your face. It actually makes them come across as worse than the villains and does nothing to make you want to see them get redeemed; it just kind of makes you go "wow. What an unhinged pair of psychopaths". The main points of the scene - that these two are willing to go for much more radical methods; that sometimes those methods might be necessary; using those as a way to further the already-established premise of the pair feeling they're superior to the other Ryousoulgers and Green in particular rubbing it in their faces - could have been achieved much more effectively without overdoing it on the malice and without making them seem completely unsympathetic. As is they're so quick to it and so malicious about it that it actually distracts from those points; weakening the scene and their characters as a result. The framing of the scene and how something is put across absolutely matters. I would please ask that you watch the episode before patronising someone for their opinion. |

Like, guys, they're not supposed to be likable or sympathetic at this point. And that's okay. It's only episode three. We've got like, 45 more episodes to go. Maybe we're just too conditioned to expect all sentai heroes to be noble, flawless paragons of justice. I think it's SUPER interesting that Towa and Banba are not that (yet). Quote:

While I’m willing to admit that I’m wrong once I get the time to watch the subs, I will however interject on this discussion for a sec.

Also the most notable thing for me was the cockpit cinematography because I am a slut for good camera shots. The fact everyone else got Dinoknights should be the first step in making Green and Banba change their outlooks |

To wade into this whole debate without having seen the episode, allow me to compare to White!Woz, from the Ryuki arc. He suggests murdering Shinji for the purposes of solving the Another Ryuga problem, and it's taken (both in universe and by us) to make him even shadier than he already was.
Now, this is slightly different, because we haven't already had four episodes of them being dodge but in a world full of redemption arcs for seemingly every villain and anti-hero, it helps if the character starts out likeable to start. Otherwise, why are we, the audience, meant to believe it when they start to become good, or meant to care in the first place? Yes, this is obvious set up to character growth where they learn to *not* murder people, but some people might have already thought they've gone too far in how unremorseful they seem to be in murdering an innocent, especially as (being a non-red Sentai member), they might not get that much on screen development anyway. |
The crux of my issue with Green and Black is more about how the episode portrays it than their actions themselves. Something about the way all of it is framed suggested to me that the show considered all of this a lot more minor than it was.
I guarantee you Towa and Bamba's character development is going to amount to simply learning to "not be jerks", the same way any other jerk rival character's arc goes. It seems less like the show has some clever and fresh plan for them and more like they came up with a very rushed and ill-advised way to show how they're not nice. There's a million ways to soften this and make it work better (have them seem more remorseful about "having" to do it, emphasize the ticking clock more to make their argument easier to agree with, NOT go out of your way to show both Towa and Bamba half a second away from going through with it), but they didn't do any of that. I'm not sure how committed I am to criticizing this show yet, but my gut keeps telling me this whole plot point was too bizarrely heavy for Super Sentai and their attempt to keep the tone light only served to create a weird clash. I'm pretty sure friggin' Wolzard would've had more qualms about doing something like this, and his entire shtick was being an EVIL knight. This whole thing just doesn't sit right with me. |
Why are people lumping in Black with Green? Green was the one treating the whole thing as a game, basically making the situation "Can the other Ryusoulgers beat the Minosaur before it grows giant?"
Black was just pragmatic, pulling a Spock on us, and his argument is fair. Is one person's life worth more than thousands? Just because they're together doesn't make Black as big of an asshole as Green was acting. |
I'm glad the pacing was a little slower than the first two episodes and that it wasn't red-centric. Asuna got a big role this episode and Melt had a small sub-plot with his Kishiryu. It's nice that they are giving the Kishiryu's distinct personalities too.
The episode dealt with some serious subject matter, with Ui wanting to commit suicide to stop the Minasaur. Pretty touching scene but could have come later in the show when we've spent more time with her and it would be more impactful. I love that Banba and Towa are almost antagonistic and are willing to kill a human just to stop the growth of a Minasaur. That, and their effectiveness as a team is greater than that of Red, Blue and Pink. So I hope they continue to have that kind of individuality even after joining the team later on. |
This episode really tries to flip many tropes, eh?
First they thoroughly sidelined red early on IN THE THIRD EPISODE of the series Then then right away shows that Towa belongs to villain side of the story more than on good-side. Chaotic Neutral and all that. Bamba's a Lawful Neutral I suppose. Then the blue ranger all of sudden feels he is not connecting to his mecha but not totally showing it. If only he has the opportunity TO TRY talking to his mecha heartfeltly the episode could be better. Then I still don't feel the attraction of the pink ranger. Usually they have some hooks that attract me, whether their physique or their mannerism. This pink is just all over the place. Then the idea of suicide. Ugh. It's like the writers are in a hurry for something and keeps on coming with some plot shortcuts. |
So, after having watched it, I can already say I hate Green and that's gonna be hard to change. He just rubs me the wrong way, and being so cheerful with murder (justified, but still murder) crosses a line for me. Black's close, but at least he seemed to be taking it seriously. Unless they bring this up again, and do some kind of "Green and Black apologise for being serial killers", expect to see me snarking at the pair a lot.
Other than that, this episode almost feels like it's coming in way too early. We barely know Ui right now, so to do this whole episode that centres around the bond between her and the Ryuusoulgers, it doesn't come off as strong as it should. Some of her backstory, interactions with the cast, anything beforehand would have fleshed this out, but of course, none of that has happened yet. I'm not even gonna mention the suicide stuff, because that's some deep subtext I don't wannt mess with yet. Add in Blue connecting with his mecha... for all of two scenes, and this episode feels like it has enough material for three. Unfortunately, squishing them all together like this hurts all the parts, imo. |
Que Shrug. I'm not feeling this series yet. And that's weird. The pacing is all off and over the place, the enemies have no purpose other than some feeling issues, and even the new characters moods are stabby.
I'll give it time, but yeah.....I just don't know what's missing. |
