BBC Discontinuing Doctor Who Animation
The Abominable Snowman will be the final mini series from the missing mini series of Doctor Who this year.

So from what I understand, BBC America has pulled out their funding of the animation range. This isn't 100% of the budget, but it's enough that either a new funding partner has to be found, or the range just stops.
There's plenty of room to discuss why that's the case - one I've heard is that, much like the TV Movie, there wasn't enough US attention for them to stick with the program now they've done the big name ones (Power of the Dalks and Evil of the Daleks tbf). And most of the 'simple' ones have been done - the most popular ones still to go are probably the Cyberman ones (which I'm honsetly surprised haven't been done yet, and instead we got Faceless Ones - maybe they were trying to pace them till after they'd done the Daleks?) and following that, you get ones that are infeasibly complex and expensive - Marco Polo, the Massacre, Daleks Master Plan. |
Well this is unfortunate.

What's the source on this?
Either way, I haven't seen much in the way of Classic Who and I don't have many on disc. I found a slightly older copy of "The Five Doctors" (not animated) and the more recently released entry "Web Of Fear" (partially animated to operate in conjunction with the surviving footage) and that's all I have with the classics. I kinda thought that the reception for the animation was split; it's a good idea, but the execution was perhaps wonky. Isn't "Galaxy 4" scheduled for the Spring? I don't know if it's animated/partially animated, but it's coming to disc later on. |
they made more DW animations?

As far as exucution goes, it's certainly not the finest animation in the world, but it does the job pretty well. And it's definitely improved over time, probably because they can reuse certain assets from previous productions. Except the CGI Web of Fear, that was bizarre. Quote:

That's not entirely connected - the DVDs are, I think, run by the BBC's Enterprise Division, and BBC America is also a sperate thing, which is how it can pull funding out of a BBC related endeavour while other bits of the BBC remain in - but yeah. It still sucks.

Some episodes had gotten BW animation to fill in missing episodes. The Reign Of Terror and The Web Of Fear are two such cases. If anything were to get annimated it would be episodes that would be missing a couple of them. The BBC may give those priority first.
The Reign Of Terror was only missing two parts as was the Web Of Fear as well as two from The Ice Warriors. I watched all 3 of these on DVD recently. I'm curious as to what others will be handled in the same manner. |
