Radiant Black - A New Toku-Inspired Comic by Kyle Higgins
Radiant Black - Character Turns and Designs Shown ----------------------------------------------- Site - https://www.radiant.black Twitter - @RadiantBlk Instagram - @RadiantBlk ---------------------------------------------- Can't wait to share some details of Issue 01! |
Ooo I definitely gotta check this out.
|
Who's the publisher and when's the release date?
|
Oh, neat, this is getting announced finally! Kyle's a friend (blew up my comic shop in an issue of Nightwing, so... I guess maybe "friend"?), and he was telling me about this at C2E2 this past year. It looks like a ton of fun!

And, yeah, Kyle is a legit toku fan. More on the US side of things, but he's working with a huge Ultraman fan on his Marvel book to keep things right, really learning more about what toku is and how it works. This one is... it's like, did you ever read Invincible? By Robert Kirkman? It was Kirkman taking all of his Spider-Man and Marvel fandom, and then creating a sandbox where he could really take risks. This, to hear Kyle describe it, is him taking all of the things he loved about working on MMPR and creating a world where there are no limits on the stories he can tell. He was really passionate about it, and I think it's going to be a winner. |
Ah so we've finally got a name (Or at least this is the first I'm hearing of the name), I'm glad I've got something to look out for now in regards to remembering it over being "Kyle Higgins new comic that is Toku Inspired" that I had been seeing for a while now.

Lol, Kirkman's Invincible and the Image comics brand was actually one of my first exposures to comic books back in grade school (thanks to my school library), didn't know he was a marvel guy. Really psyched for Kyle's Ultraman, again was it a mini series, or was it a full run? I loved his work since Nightwing and have actually tried to meet him multiple times to have him sign my Nightwing #1issue. It blows my mind that you know him. Has he ever done signings at your store? |

The Ultraman book is currently three issues in on a five-issue series. If it's successful (#1 had to be reprinted, so I think it did okay!) Marvel will likely do more mini-series. Kyle's a Chicago guy, so we mostly got to know him because he'd be back in town for family stuff. We've done a few signings with him, when his schedule allows. Nowadays, we run into him for C2E2 and whenever he's in town for family or business. I'd say I see him maybe one or two times a year? |
Damn, i didn't realize issue#1 already released. Hopefully i can find #3 and the back issues. If not, hopefully, it'll get a trade release.
Radiant Blacks suit design, art-style, and concept already look amazing. Hopefully, i can snag issue#1 on release. |
Another interesting comic which makes me unnerved that I don't live near a legitimate comic book store! I have to drive two hours north or 90 minutes south to reach something that would have this (when it releases).

I'm not familiar with his other work (though what I'm hearing here makes me optimistic) so I don't know what to expect from the story, but dang, that suit design is fantastic! It's simple but striking and really makes that stark black-and-white color scheme work, especially with the bluish energy effects. I lowkey already want it as an action figure.

As for his writing style - Kyle loves to tell over-arcing stories that are also self-contained if that makes sense. You will get a full story from front to back of each issue but also expand out a larger story in the process. And he loves page-turners, where you turn the page to a big scene or a shocking surprise. Really makes each comic you read an experience front to back. |
Oh yeah, he was -- that's good to hear; pre-shattered grid boom was pretty great

TOMORROW (Wednesday) - our in-depth and (mostly) spoiler-free look at Issue 01 of Radiant Black.

Having my own "get-my-foot-out-the-door" issues in life, so something that echoes the like might be fun and even a little helpful. |

That animated trailer was pretty cool! Still excited to see how the comic turns out.
|
I was chewing on the book's title and now, I wonder whether there'll be a Radiant Red, Blue, Pink, etc. showing up later in the book.
|
*looks at price*
*backs away* Yeah, just gonna wait until I can walk into my LGS and pick up a copy of the normal print run. Pretty hype for it though. |

I rode 90 minutes south from where I'm at to get this. It wasn't the only thing I got today (check the Kamen Rider Figure-Rise Thread), but this was the primary.
I can understand someone who hasn't gotten everything to fit together and who's not where they want to be in life. I'm a college grad and I have little to nothing to my credit. The premise behind this book feels real and genuine. I don't want to give much away, but this is definitely more adult in tone and it's predicated on the character drama and heart of the characters. I'm interested in more of this. I do want to point out Kyle Higgins' comments at the end. It really speaks to a lot of us here. Higgins had those around him who gave him grief for his love of brightly colored teenagers with attitude and I myself grew terrified of spreading my love for that same franchise around back in high school (though I was in a mostly Sentai mood as a Senior). There is a lot of Higgins that I can understand and that's why I'm including images of the "Black Mail" from the back of Issue 1. Of note, I decided to omit a key image from the last page for the moment. You really need to read this book, if only once. |
For those that missed it(like me), Inferno Girl Red is a thing, and the series is going to have some sort of Kickstarter starting in March. For what exactly isn't known.

Anyway, hot damn I love those designs! I can see the influence of T-rex themed Rangers and dragon-themed Riders in her hero suit, but it's still different enough to be distinctive. That particular shot is really well-done too, I especially like how the crackle of energy frames her eye and points to her fist. Something tells me that gauntlet is probably going to be her transformation item! I like her civilian look too, she reminds me of some really cool girls I know IRL. It's interesting that the patch of vitiligo over her eye matches the eye that's shown through her visor, I wonder if drawing attention to her right eye like that is gonna be some important 'thing'? |

I don't know if it's just me, but I think American comic books are a little overpriced. I've had interest in checking out the IDW Godzilla comics, but never found them for a reasonable price besides maybe the Godzilla Rulers of Earth Omnibus (Which I haven't gotten, since my bookstores don't sell them anymore), that and the Redman the Kaiju Hunter. I don't know about Marvel's Rise of Ultraman, since the recent Marvel comics don't look that good, and don't get me started on the Star Wars ones, even though I know it sounds like the people who worked on the Power Ranger comics are really good, I'm just not exactly willing to pay for it.
Not to sound mean to anyone who does like American comics, but I just think Manga is more worth my time and money. But I do think Radiant Black looks good. |

So starting with issue 3 Radient Black is going to get a soundtrack compose by a real orchestra of all things!
https://imagecomics.com/press-releas...-radiant-black As well as going back and compose music for the past two issues as well https://radiant.black/music/ |
Goodness, they're really putting alot of effort into this!
|
Wrong thread sorry about that
