Ninja Steel DX Megazord Review
|
Looks like a totally okay rendition of a terrible, terrible mecha design.
Also, funny how he calls them tiny when it's almost the exact same size as the Japanese version. Definitely not as good as the Dino Charge Megazords. |

When a good toy of this mecha comes around, that'll be good advice. |
Looks cheaply designed to be called the "Deluxe" Ninja Steel Megazord. I thought Deluxe sized Megazord toys were supposde to have expensive plastic, not cheap plastic.

It took me forever to come around to it but it's a really unique design that instantly stands out in a crowd, and I like how the black on the limbs unifies the design when combined despite being made up of 5 seemingly completely random pieces. And the variety of those components is itself pretty interesting compared to the usual "here's 5 cars/animals" fare. I mean, if you think it looks fugly that's one (admittedly quite understandable) thing, but it seems to me like it was just as well thought out as any other Sentai mecha. |

Believe it or not, I did like the original DX Shurikenjin. It will never be one my favorite Super Sentai mecha, but I liked its unique design of having a smaller robot pilot a mech suit and the fact the thing could take on two combined forms. Unfortunately, I felt a bit disappointed with the rest of the toyline, but that's for another topic. On-topic: I felt like I was watching an episode of Phelous' Bootleg Zones, showing off a Shurikenjin bootleg. And then I realized this unfortunately is the official product and is what many kids in the western world will have to deal with the coming 2 years. The part where the arm of the dragon fell off was especially worrisome. |

BUT That's just my opinion. |

More on-topic, the toy looks fine? I mean, it seems like a downgrade from the Dino Charge stuff but I think that's more the fault of the design they're working with than the actual budget shrinking. There's a lot less paint you can afford to leave out with Shurikenjin and still have it look good. The biggest offender here is that plain blue sword. You could even just had it be two parts and done the blade in the dump truck's yellow plastic and it would've been better than nothing. Speaking of which, the lack of black on the actual torso of the Megazord makes it look less coherent than it did too. I don't know, I get that sacrifices have gotta be made to fit a budget, but every year with the BoA versions of stuff I have this thought of "if it did just one more thing right I'd be fine with it". This year it's definitely that sword, more than anything. |

I will say though, and I've said it before, this gives me new appreciation for Kyouryuger's mecha and BOA's translation of them. Hell, those were actually better in some case. (especially where the clips are concerned) This is definitely not to the same quality as those for sure, even ignoring the original design. |

Comparatively, ever since ToQger, it seems like Sentai has been deliberately taking a page out of their playbook and making chunkier, simpler robots designed to actually be something a kid can smash around without instantly breaking something important. |
To be honest, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be.
|
I still like it and would like to get the Rumble Tusk Megazord or one that has the other otomonin like UFO or Surfermaru because making it all one color scheme will help me get used to some design changes.
But what scares me is that quality control lssues. IF ANYONE GETS THIS TOY PLEASE TELL ME IF IT AFFECTS YOUR COPY TOO Also just realized Bison King will most likely be repainted as purple for Surfermaru if they do plan to do a repaint for each otomonin. |
This is literally the opposite of the Dino Charge zords.
NS (from the video): -Fine amount of paint apps -Low quality plastic -Terrible mold DC: -Bare minimum paint apps -Good quality plastic -Really good molds (At least the main megazord and Ptera zord that I have) |
At least for the Rumble Tusk the dump truck can be considered to be a chariot for Paonmaru to pull around since they are both green

And just wondering guys, if I want to discuss the Ninja Steel BOA line, is there a thread for it yet? I found a review for the Tusk zord and dont know if I should make anew thread or not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gyY4pYnKbE&t=6s Since they look the same size as the Japanese versions I wonder if we can use the Japanese versions of the auxliliary zords to fit in the BOA versions. |
|
I think that the BoA will serve my purpose, though the breaking of parts on Balt's video is a bit concerning.
However, my main complaint about Ninninger was the huge ninja star "hats" because of the batteries/lights/sounds. So I'm actually happy that the BoA stars don't have them at all. I know, I know, I'll just get it out of the way so you guys don't have to: "Heathen! Heathen!" :lol |
Finally got around to watching this "review", and wow... that was one REALLY whiny video. I'm not even going to bother with the comparison video, as the guy already made it very clear what he thinks of this compared to the BoJ version.
Seriously though, picking up the Megazord by it's lower legs and tilting it's body back causing the knees to bend isn't the same as it not being able to stand on it's own... It's definitely not perfect, but from what I've seen, I do prefer this to the original. Also, I think I'll be sticking to Bruno's reviews and the occasional ones Andre does. |

The downside is for those who don't want to import and were hoping to have virtually the same item but for a lower price are going to get pieces that are changed, sometimes for the worst, when compared to the original. And for those frustrations, I can relate. |

I could be wrong, but bad QC happens sometimes (even from BoJ), especially since this is literally the first batch of product for Ninja Steel. Even if every copy had the same problems, it's totally possible for Bandai to fix them in future shipments. Quote:

I'm generally for Sentai myself, because of the all around better quality but like I said, I feel like the smaller hats are an improvement. |

Also if you want some good reviews, I find dosmrider pretty good. |
Dosmrider lost me when he started accusing critics of the new movie of only wanting "high school production" budget or other such crap. That dedicated, ignorant refusal to acknowledge the opposite side's opinions isn't something I want to see more of, personally.
Bruno (and Mia) are still my favourites. But I like Balt and totally empathize with his dislike for how cheap this Megazord is. (again, Dino Charge did so much better) |
I feel as though Ninja Steel products were rushed. It feels as if the product production started BEFORE the show's details were ironed-out! Examples have been seen before, like Lost Galaxy's Captain Mutiny figure being called "Space Buccaneer"! Given the missed details, like the wings being a single piece that rests on the sword, i'd theorize that they followed images pulled from the show or even some quick toy shots and rushed into the design stage, "carefully" skirting details or tossing away "frivolous" parts of the original Ninninger designs to cut-down on costs! I say "images" because some of the in-show functionality reveals some differences, like Dumpmaru and how it threw things at the Youkai in the first episode with the "two-piece feet rests", assuming Saban and Co. are even going to use the footage of that attack! I do wonder if some of the Ninja Star packs are going to have the PR-version of the REAL DRAGON HEAD used by Shurikenjin Drago! The better question is: If the quality is getting worse, how are Bison King or Gekiatsu Dai-Oh going to be!?!
|
The head and face look a lot more accurate on this one. The crest on the japanese version was a lot smaller. Too bad they didnt paint the rest of the head on wanmaru. I feel like the promo shots end up looking a lot worse than the actual toy. And that dragon mode...

I think I would have liked a video of the cat playing with the part that fell off.
Also, best review line ever: "The US version is utter crap". |

I don't know what Ninja Steel will be like but Ninninger was a really quirky, out there kind of show, and five totally unrelated things combining into a giant robot piloted by a smaller giant robot in its stomach communicates that perfectly. Shurikenjin isn't exactly what I would call "cool", but it's interesting and it's unique, and that wins it some points. I'd totally love to get a new Sentai robot that's a bit more traditional looking myself, but taken for what it is I think Shurikenjin clearly had some real effort put into its design. Note that what I just said is a different matter from it actually looking any good. That's entirely in the eye of the beholder, and I can totally empathize with people who can't dig what Shurikenjin is bringing to the table. This version isn't exactly doing its looks any favors, either. :p |
I think my problem with the 'homaging various previous mecha" and cooky diversity approach is I can't help but see that as an afterthought. The legs being a train is clearly just because it's easy to make legs out of a train. The dump truck as the body is clearly just because they needed a hollow box zord for the seat gimmick. Etc. it doesn't seem like they picked series' to homage then came up with a robot. It seems like they picked the easiest shapes to suit their needs, then justified it with homage after the fact. Hell, the wolf does nothing at all for the combination. Usually the shitty little extra zord forms like a chest or helmet, not just on the leg.
I will say though, the dog zord on the US version is far superior to the Japanese version with actual, seperate legs and better proportions. It's adorable. |
Great news! The japanese toys are compatible with the BOA molds. Meaning you can fir the auxiliary zords in no problem:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRPP8QyDSMU And it doesnt seem it has any trouble standing. |
This would be funny if it wasn't so damned sad. Let's compare them to the recent Dino Charge toys, for example. They were made on a budget. But they weren't sacrificed for that budget. They're the best BoA release in years even, in my opinion. And then you have these. The wings not forming the shield is to be expected, the train being connected like that too. Because Zord Builder. Maru looks passable and the dog wasn't much to speak of in the BoJ release either. But that damn Dump Truck. Dump is right. The fist just having off the cockpit, the back.. oh my Gosei the back. It's like BoA let all the praise from the DC releases go to their heads and decided to take a year off.
I cannot wait to see how they screw up Bison. |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTS9Nm14sD4
So, uhhh... kudos to Bruno for straight up breaking his zord on purpose. I guess that does confirm Balt's was a lemon, though. |

I get that that they don't look too nice, but it's weird to see complaints about BoA's plastic quality being cheap when they seem pretty clearly built to withstand being tossed around by children just fine. Try bonking Kyoryujin on the head with a pair of pliers like that and see what happens. Or don't because it's a horrible idea and will probably break the clips on the arms somehow. Judging by what few things I've bought personally the past few years and also from what I've seen, it's always seemed like durability is one of the few things you can't fault BoA's stuff for. |
Yeah, people seem to confuse quality with physical touch.
Harder, more "high quality" plastic is actually far more likely to break than this supposed lower quality, but more flexible and robust, plastic. |
Quote:
Also, I hold off on buying anything PR related till after I've seen at least some of the show the item is based on. Even if I wanted the BoJ version specifically, most Sentai-based toys are more expensive than what I'm willing to pay for them by the time the PR equivalent is airing. Quote:
