Space Wolf Juspion Blu-Ray Set Announced!
1 Attachment(s)
At Otakon, Discotek annouinced that they'll be releasing a the Space Wolf Juspion Complete Series blu Ray set! No word on pricing or release date as of yet, all we know is that it'll have English subtitles and will be released sometime in Q1 2019.

They also got Message from Space! It's basically Star Wars as a Japanese tokusatsu TV series.

This is... Pretty big right? I know someone who'll be as giddy as they were during the Smash Direct's CastleVania showcase
|
Oh, that's a more obscure one! I always love seeing more official English subtitled tokusatsu.
|
"Standard Definition"? "SD on BD"? What is that supposed to mean? DVD-quality but on a Blu-ray disk regardless? Why though?

I'd definitely say this is big though. Metal Heroes are one of Toei's three big franchises and Juspion is one of the more popular entries in the series. It was aired in a couple of different countries around the world and I know it was pretty huge in Brazil. Honestly, I'd say any tokusatsu series release in the US is huge news. This isn't something anyone ever really thought would happen just a couple of years ago. I mean, yeah, there's the Kamen Rider V3 and Kikaider sets, but those were aimed squarely at Hawaii due to its connections to Japan. |
Will there be others?
I'm actually amused at this! Has the distributor released any other Tokusatsu before? |
Buying this so we can eventually get the Space Sheriff series stateside.
|
Huh. This is right out of left field. I'll probably pick this up, even though I'm not a big Metal Heroes fan. I just think that something like this should be encouraged (also, if it does well, hopefully we'll get Metalder, which is one of my all-time favorite toku shows).

I was at Otakon when they announced this. It really took me by surprise given how niche this is. Mike Tool did said if this sells well, you can see more Japanese live action shows in the future.
|
I've been gushing about this on Twitter all day and I am just floored that it's even happening. The folks at Megabeast Empire did tremendous work fansubbing the show before, and now for their work to be used for the official release, it's just incredible. So happy and proud of the achievement of the subbing community on days like this.
This opens the door. Please support this release and even more may be possible. I want my Winspector BD's damn it! |
August Ragone said that Discotek is testing the waters with these two titles. How they proceed with licensing more (or not) is up to how the sales go. Please support these releases!

A couple of other questions on this:
- How did the distributor get the license to release Juspion and Message from Space? - Why would the distributor choose Juspion as the first Metal Heroes to release anyway? - Addendum to Second Question: Is Discotek trying to capitalize on the success of Shout! releasing Super Sentai in the West? - Second Addendum: Will Shout! and Discotek combat each other in an attempt to release more Kamen Rider (barring the V3 Discs and Amazons-On-Amazon-Prime attempts)? - Will this cement the success of releasing Tokusatsu in the West in direct translation and make the Sci-Fi community of America take notice? Found an article on the issue which states that existing fan-subbers were used for the subbing of Juspion: http://ukiyaseed.weebly.com/ukiyasee...can-bd-release - Given that fan-subbers were at the very least consulted, should Shout! consider the same for Sentai Subs? P.S.: HOORAY FOR DAI-LEON!!! |
This is cool! Juspion is cool!

Because of VR troopers. That's why it was chosen. It was the cheaper one out of the selection used for VR Troopers, and has the strongest following. Metalder is pricey and doesn't have as strong of an abroad following. Relatively the same reasons the Fansubbers chose it too. Outside of the distro cost. Business is business and there's an open market for other stuff besides sentai. Which Shout and the Garo releases revealed. No, they won't be fighting over Kamen Rider releases. That's been mostly locked up by Amazon now. Won't cement the success as yet, but it's a stepping stone in that direction. Until major networks actively consider airing it or gain footing from new productions of material into a hit series, it won't make major strides in the west again. But we are on that path as Science Fiction becomes more dominant in the mainstream. (IFC may or may not be looking into something because of the subbed material now being available to use. USA, TNT, and SYFY are considering things too since their network history has aspects of it. Juspion was also on a shortlist for a new 'americanized' adaptation using cues from the VR TRoopers casting. But nothing official has come out of those as yet. Having 'plans' or 'in talks' doesn't always mean comes to fruition. And that's been up for discussion for over 5 years now. So who knows if anything will come out of it.) Fansubbers vary. Some do great work and have more back channels to various companies than many realize. Other fansubs are a by accuracy basis. Some aren't as accurate as you might think, though in many areas official aren't either. Accuracy is something a lot suffer from. Much of that has to do with editors though too. Word choice, and cutting full said words out is definitely jarring too. Both suffer from that. Like injecting curse words into works where the curse word was never said definitely gets old real quick. This instance, theirs were checked and it was the cheaper method to get that work than it was to have it done again by someone on a payroll. Going forward this will likely vary depending on costs. But when a fansubber does good work, it always is a good idea to commend and celebrate that and make their dedication feel appreciated. Especially if that dedication led to accurate non-adlibbed material that maintains creator intent. There's a story about the backchannels to bigger releases that's kind of sadly ironic funny. One fansub group had power mad members that didn't do any work but they bullied the stealth backchannel that was looking into the group's releases as official work. Some of their other members are still on a list of potentials though. But that harassment incident by those egotistical members still lingers as a black mark on that group. Which is a shame, they were one of the original ones being groomed for stuff like this until those incidents. It was decided they were too risky and could cause bad press. The ones chosen for this release were also stealth groomed for it. And since they were decent people and dedicated fans, were given a greenlight for official talks as they weren't a marketing risk but could be a marketing gain. Goes to show, be careful how you treat people. You may never know who you're talking to online. *edit* Not TV-Nihon. While they would be a marketing mess. They were actually talked to about this once, and declined it while also being made aware of the possible marketing issues it'd entail. Some of their work may still get used in the future though. But for marketing, the common thought is to avoid drama prone areas. And they do have a few egotistical areas/members that are an issue(three in particular that keep them on the "not yet" list). But some side shows if there is a market for them, are being looked into. Keitai, Akihabara@deep, Shibuya, Tr1ck, and that new detective show about competing against the computer for example. Quote:
Makes you wonder what happens to the translations when even the spoken English doesn't match the lines being said. |

A series like Metal Heroes is probably way cheaper to license and it would be a good way to test the water for other Henshin Heroes. If someone like Discotek or Kraken Releasing does release something Kamen Rider related, I guess movies like Shin-J would be possible seeing how movies are cheaper to license than a 50+ TV series. |

Don't think KR Black played a factor though. May have. Though I know the various greenlights to do this went through a couple different checks and plans. My info is only from a handful and not all. Kamen Rider on the other hand has other plans, and is currently locked up with Amazon as part of the Amazons deal. But Toei is looking into ways to bring it to the west and other markets. KR has a heavier auth system compared to sentai. Even stricter really. Shin and ZO are possibles though. Especially if IFC or other avenues want do a focus on science fiction from abroad. Message from space may end up on IFC. Especially if they want to focus on Ishinomori for some scifi Japan focuses. KR The First is also up on that list of possibles, depending on timing. And depending on the rights issue, the Hakaider movie too. Maybe the Ultraman Next movie as well. Since those are already stateside, they may get looked into for airing on IFC. And there's been talk at one time about the Iria/Zeram movies too. Same with Casshern's live action(sadly the edited version, though they really need to release an uncut version). But those would be more isolated airings with a brief run on digital/on demand whereas Message would be a regular series airing in a moderately late night regular slot. IFC had been experimenting with wider culture horror movies, but they may or may not be looking into expanding that to include more science fiction too. Theirs a scifi movie from Spain that's high on the list too. |

If the dude had an afro at one point and dons a sleek silver suit with red trims during combat, Juspion. If dude wears a funky red jacket outside of battle and when in battle dons a chrome and black suit, Spielban. |

How many human-sized villains did Juspion have? I know the main draw were the battles involving Daileon, but the minimal details I have suggest that it wasn't just about Giants!
|
I've been looking to dive into Metal Heroes for a while now...would Juspion be a good start? I saw the first two eps of Metalder, which I enjoyed, and of course there was VR Troopers and Beetleborgs when I was a young camper...
