Ultraman Discussion Thread
Since the only Ultraman thread with any real responses is the "Anyone not into Ultraman" thread, I thought I would make a more straightforward Ultra Thread.
I've been watching the original series on the Mill Creek DVDs and I am loving it. It's so earnest and old school Showa that it's hard not to be charmed by it. The Science Patrol is great. Ironically, the only character who's sort of bland is Hayata, since he has to run off and become Ultraman. The Captain is great. He's like the hero of the first 18 minutes of each episode most of the time. Ahashi is pretty cool as well. I like that one of his main traits is that he is really good with his Spider Shot gun. Ide of course is silly, but that's alright. It's so broad that you have to smile at it. And Fuji of course is very cute. It's also novel to see her relegated to staying at the base so often, especially when one considers that in the same era, Honda usually put his heroines into the thick of things -- Tsuburaya doesn't seem to share that affection at this point. The monsters vary in how well they are executed. Antlar, for instance, looks fantastic. One of the best beetle monsters I have ever seen in any medium. A lot the monsters look cheap because they were cheap, and made quickly. But they have great character and most of them look great too. Dodongo, for instance, doesn't have the best production values but his design is excellent for a sphinx-like monster. Gesura also looks really great as a fish/lizard thing. Once I finish this one, I think I am going to move onto Ultraseven, which I used to watch on TNT as a what is now called "tween." Ultraseven is a fantastic series even in goofy dubbed form, so I am looking forward to catching it subbed thanks to Hi No Tori Subs. |
It warms the heart to finally see a good Ultraman thread here! I know, I know, should've just made one myself, but that's neither here nor there.
Between too many shows and not enough time, as much as I love the Ultras, I haven't given the franchise much time lately. Last thing I watched was part one of Killer the Beaststar, the followup to the Ultraman Zero film. I'm thinking I might change that, pull out my DVD set of Ultraman, and rewatch it. It's either that or do the same but with Tiga. I actually own the two harder-to-find volumes but not the fourth. I think I bought the first one... better look for that regardless. |
So glad somebody started a thread like this!
I grew up with the original Ultraman when it aired in syndication around '74/75, and I had always remained a fan. The dvd's from Mill Creek helped me relive a time in my childhood that I enjoyed. Just watching them recently, I think some of my favorite episodes include the ones with Gomora, both Baltan episodes, Jirass, Mephilas, and Z-ton! I also have the Tiga series on dvd to give another Ultra series a try, and enjoyed it as well. It's definitely geared for a younger audience, but it did have some good moments. The anniversary episode is really worth watching! I also have a copy of Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy just to see what the modern Ultra story had to offer. Fun movie, and I got to see the original Ultraman back in action! I'll have to make more time to check some of the Showa/Heisei series I never seen. I'd like to check out Ultraseven at some point too. |
I need to just break down and find those Tiga DVDs. What I have seen of Tiga I really like.
I also have the ULTRAMAN movie (AKA Ultraman The Next) which is cool. It's definitely an updating of the concept. You really get the feeling of what Tsuburaya was going for, with the more "mature" storytelling. The effects alone make it worthwhile watching. I have the old anime somewhere as well... at least I used to, not sure anymore, huh. I've got my eye on an Ultra-Act of the original Ultraman, but I have yet to pull the trigger. Although with GI Joe Retaliation delayed and the toys beyond the first wave cancelled, I may have some extra money to pick him up with, heh! |
Someone help me here. I remember back when Fox showed cartoons, and before Foxbox and 4Kids,TV butchered them like Buffulo Bill, they showed an american version of Ultraman. Was it called Ultraman, though? I don't remember. I just remember thinking Samurai Squad was better. But then I loved Drago, so.
|
You are probably thinking of Ultraman: Towards The Future, which was an Australian produced Ultraman show which was shown on US TV in 1992. There were even toys and a SNES video game based on this Ultra show. The hero from this series is now referred to as Ultraman Great, although in the show he is simply called "Ultraman."
You can see Towards The Future on Netflix, believe it or not! Info: http://ultra.wikia.com/wiki/Ultraman...rds_the_Future http://www.clubdesmonstres.com/best/...mangreat15.jpg |
Well, evidently Netflix no longer has Towards the Future on Watch Instant. Huh!
|
Check out my plushie Ultra Monsters!
Bemular... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...e/GEDC0010.jpg ...and Gesura! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...e/GEDC0008.jpg These are from Banpresto's 30th Anniversary line of 101 Ultra Kaiju plushies from 1995. So kawaii! Their tags are funny as well, since the back features a cute cartoon of the monster. Bemular is driving in a tiny capsule, being pursued by Ultraman in his own tiny capsule, which is the plot of his episode. Gesura is eating a giant bar of chocolate, as he loves cocoa beans (again, a major plot element from his episode). |
i love ultraman leo series and
ultraman dyna go go super guts team |

I remember watching Ultraman: Towards the Future on TV as well. One thing I will never forget about that show is that Ultraman's time limit was due to the "polluted atmosphere of Earth." Always thought that was a neat touch. Also, there was a 3 issue Ultraman comic right around then which was based on Towards the Future. Although, in the comic, they refer to Great as the same Ultraman who came to Earth in 1965, which is nonsensical now, but at the time I thought was very cool! |
Speaking of Ultraman comics, the series done to coincide with Tiga was pretty damn cool. It remained mostly faithful to the series with its own bit of humor (Melba, you're toast!). Some monsters from the series only ultimately appeared as cameos, while others like the invading Regulan aliens were altered to look like the classic Baltans instead of the swirly starfish-cone look the originals had going for them. Needless to say, that was a change that received no complaints from me. :D
|
I have never seen the Tiga comics; I will have to track them down. I am going to HeroesCon in a few weeks in Charlotte so I will see what I can see there.
Melba always was a cool looking monster, even if his name always elicited snickers from me. The Fox Tiga was hard for me to watch. I mean that literally; I didn't have cable when it was airing so I had to go by over the air. In the apartment I was in when it first started airing, this was not a problem. But I moved midway through the show and I never seemed to catch it in the new apartment. Part of it also was that I was always out of town on the weekends, as well. I'd like to grab those DVDs but man, some of them are really pricey. The jokiness of the show was grating but you got used to it; it reminded me of watching Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad back in the day, where I would either mute or tune out the dialogue and just watch the effects. In fact Tiga was better in that respect because it had the GUTS crew and not American inserts. |
At the time it was airing, I never really watched Tiga despite my love for Godzilla and later Power Rangers, a decision I only slightly regret. It was made worse by the dub but the real killer was that on the few occasions I did see it, it was always the Halloween episode. I ultimately hated that episode for some reason I now forget but it tarnished my interest in the show for years. Don't recall what aired on its timeslot on the WB, but that was what regularly kept me from seeing any better episodes.

Put in an order for the reissue of Ultra-Act Ultraman yesterday. Have to wait until mid-to-late July for him to come in, but I am very excited to have ordered my first Ultra-Act figure!
When I get some more money I am going to pick up a Bandai Ultra Monsters Bemular for him to fight, hehehe! Also, Baltan, mycomicshop.com has 9 of the 10 issues of the Dark Horse Tiga comic... I think I am going to order them next time I put together an order from them. Some 4 color Ultra goodness, baby! http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=475511 |
Got to play some Taiketsu! Ultra Hero yesterday for my GBA.
OH MY GOD. This game is an Ultra Fan's dream come true. A straight up one on one fighting game, it stars a whole band of Ultras and some monsters, and is clean, fast, and has the best controls of any Ultraman game I have ever played. It's got Ultraman, Ultraseven, Jack, Taro, Tiga, Gaia, and Agul, then for the monsters it has Baltan, Zetton (Z-Ton), Dinotanker, Tyrant, Gatanozoa, and Reicubas. You can read more about it here: http://ultra.wikia.com/wiki/Taiketsu!_Ultra_Hero And here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2kwFFfRXGo And you can find it on any good romsite. Any Ultra fan should check this awesome game out, you will not be disappointed. |
I'm going to make this an emoticon in my messaging program here at work:
http://www.ultraman.com.br/gifs/specium.gif I like this one too but I don't think it's going to come up much! http://www.comajoe.com/takuguy/snaku-u7roxLAH.gif |
Watched the first two episodes of Ultraseven X. Very cool. Very dark and moody show. The second episode, which deals with alien abduction, really gave me a strong Ultra Q/X-Files vibe moreso than an Ultraman one.
Definitely a real change of pace from more typical Ultra shows and light years away from the modern Super Sentai and Kamen Rider stuff for sure. |
Anyone here ever seen Ultraman: The Next?
|
I have it on DVD but have never watched it. It is on my "to watch" pile, though. I have next Friday off, so I am penciling it in for then...
|
I enjoyed it, it feels like a Ultraman film made for a US audience.
|
I just watched the Gabadon episode this weekend. What I liked about the show was that it balanced some of the silly, kiddie aspects with some more serious stuff. The end of the episode, with the Captain feeling a sense of dread about all of the kids drawing with chalk on the playground, but balancing that with the thought that creating from their imagination is the gift of children, was very thought provoking for me. I dug it.
|
I started ultrasevenX and Max today I enjoyed Max but ultrasevenX was just awesome. Going to start Mebius tomorrow maybe start Dyna or Tiga even also.
|
Is there anything current going on with Ultraman?
|
some guy nearly dies, bonds with ultra man...monsters for no real reason attack, guy turns out to be in elite army group that while looks cool really can't do a thing against monsters, but then guy finds out he can become a giant dude with some kind of fin for a head. He then punches and kicks the monster for about 45 seconds, then fires a beam from his arm. Monster blows up, and hijinks happen with the army crew....
some real original stuff that will blow people out of the water I hear... |
Ha ha very funny. Ha ha very droll. :P
|
Is Ultraman Nexus worth the watch? Keep in mind my only Ultraman experience was the FoxKids show years back, and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad.
|
I think it's worth watching. It's a modern series and I have heard good things about it. Have not had a chance to watch it myself (I am way behind presently...).
|
Also, turns out that my seller of the Ultra-Act Ultraman was a flake, so I had to raise a case with eBay and get my money refunded. So still looking for that toy. Anyone willing to part with one?
|
Nexus is great, but it's really not representative of what you should come to expect out of Ultraman. For some people that's a good thing, for others a bad thing. Nexus was the first Ultra show I really watched, and I still appreciate it for the path it lead me down despite it no longer being the apple of my eye the way Gaia or especially Max is.

See, my knowledge and love of Ultraman is more from the Showa stuff than the Hesai and other modern era stuff. I don't know why so much of the modern stuff, including the movies, are not subbed. Or, if they are, I just can't find them. Ultra Galaxy: Mega Monster Battle, for instance, I can't find stuff for that anywherem including Mega Monster Battle Ultra Galaxy The Movie, which seems to be the sort of key linking film.
Just so strange to me that there are literally fansub outfits fighting over dubbing Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but there is a ton of Ultraman which is just out in the void. Baltan II, think you can give a breakdown of what order to watch the modern stuff in, at least in as far as when it ties together like the Mega Monster Battle and Ultraman Zero stuff? Near as I can tell this is the order: Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle Never Ending Odyssey Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends The Movie Ultra Galaxy Legend Gaiden: Ultraman Zero vs. Darklops Zero I Ultra Galaxy Legend Gaiden: Ultraman Zero vs. Darklops Zero II Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial Ultraman Zero Gaiden: Killer The Beatstar I (added 9/17) Ultraman Zero Gaiden: Killer The Beatstar II (added 9/17) Ultraman Saga |
Still loving Ultraseven X... just watched the third episode, really enjoying this show.

I picked up Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends The Movie on DVD off of eBay after Christmas. So very much looking forward to watching that.
I was at a New Year's Eve party on Monday and I told two of my friends about it, including how a lot of it takes place on the Ultra planet and thus no 3 minute time limit. One of my friends looked at me and said "Why aren't we watching this RIGHT NOW?!" :D |

Got (finally) my Ultra-Act Ultraman. He's so boss!
|
Just watched Ultraseven X episode 7. This show continues to impress me. I am reminded of a mix of The X-Files and Doctor Who, with a layer of Ultra on top of it. This episode especially had a Doctor Who feel to it, with an alien and Earthling having fallen in love. The Viro aliens also had that sort of basic BBC look to them, but unlike anything from Doctor Who they also had a giant robot! Ha!

STILL waiting on my Ultra Kaiju Bemlar; supposedly going to ship some time this week. I want someone for my Ultra-Act Ultraman to fight, dagnabit!
My wife had to work last night, so after the kids went to bed I got to watch some Ultraman. I watched episodes 18-21 from the Mill Creek DVDs. The episodes featured the monsters Zarab-seijin, Aboras & Banilla, Hidora, and Kemular. The show is really hitting it's stride now and the mix of more traditional science fiction is now becoming more confident. The Zarab-seijin episode is a devious twist up of the Day The Earth Stood Still, with an alien coming to Earth claiming to be friendly but is (of course) secretly evil. Zarab is a bad dude, and he gives us our first Ultra vs Ultra fight! (Sort of.) The next episode has Aboras and Banilla being accidentally awoken from their ancient tomb and rampaging across the country to fight at the Olympic arena. It's the first time in a while that we have seen two monsters fight on the show, and it's a neat fight as they destroy the arena. Both monsters are clearly rehashes of earlier suits but they have a lot of personality so that's alright. And we get some great city-smashing as well! The Hidora episode has some metaphysical elements as the monster seems to be embodied with the soul of a dead boy. Hidora himself is a really in-your-face monster. When Ultraman first appears to fight him, he is not even done landing before Hidora runs right into his chest and knocks him down. Plus the ending is a twist, too. Finally, the Kemular episode had some elements which (to me anyway) called back to earlier Tsuburaya stuff. Namely, the scene of the ladies hiking up the mountain only to be attacked by Kemular made me think of the young couple being attacked in Rodan. Similarly we get a very old school scene of Kemular raging across an open field as the JSDF pounds on him with artillery, only to have the monster lay waste to them. I can't wait to watch some more. The Jamilia episode is coming up, and some classic monsters are going to reappear soon. This show is just an absolute blast. Well my seller has finally marked my Bemular vinyl as Shipped so hopefully he should be here in a few days! |
Just watched the debut of Gomora. Holy crap! I never knew why this guy was always put in the same league as monsters like Red King and Eleking and Baltan, and now I do. He's more akin to something from a Toho production than an Ultra monster. Now I am really interested in seeing him as a summoned monster in Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle...
