SSSS Gridman Discussion Thread
The new Studio Trigger/Tsuburaya collaboration starts TODAY!
First episode already available on CrunchyRoll. What did everyone think??? |
First episode had a distinct "toku" feel to it.
Like it felt like it could have worked just as well in live-action. Similar pacing, character beats, set-up moments, etc. I also loved how the monster of this episode had traits reminiscent of a guy in an actual monster suit, specifically the flopping head and emotionless face. It seemed to make it more unsettling as a result. The trope of using the show's OP for the climax of the first fight was also great. Actually had me grinning from ear to ear watching it all play out. Only real thing I didn't like was the elongated scene of the class room frozen in shock after the special dog was squashed. Went on for way too long and felt like obvious time-wasting. But outside of that, impressed at how authentically toku it all felt. |
Well I know what I’m watching when I get home while waiting for Toonami to start!
|
I really enjoyed the episode, it felt very toku-like.
That being said I didn't like the way some scenes were done like the cuts when Yuta and Rikka when talking in the store, it felt like the video was corrupted or that it was lagging. Also as Shin Henshin pointed out: Quote:

So, this show has a true simuldub (released at the same time as the subs) and whoever is playing the virus villain is channeling Tim Curry's Kilokahn voice so hard and I love it. I don't think it's Tim Curry, but I find myself questioning if it is him. Sadly can't find a VA list beyond who's in the dub trailer.
As for the episode, I felt it was a little too slow in places. There's one shot in particular that I couldn't tell if the video was still playing because it was a single frame with no sound held for way, way, to long. Otherwise, I had a good time. Good fight, good designs. While I might be sounding negative, I want to watch more, and that's a good feeling to have after one episode. |
Watching the first episode is it me or is the old computer meant be same one from the original toku.
|
I have to agree that the first half of the episode was a little dull, but it improved towards the latter half when the action finally started to pick up.
|
Huh, I expected much more out of this after I’ve read what people said about it. The first episode was dull, generic and boring. A really pathetic start because it wants me to drop this show immediately more than anything else really.
And considering I have much better stuff to watch I might just do exactly that. If this was Toku I could get a kick out of monster- and hero-suits or special effects, but generic looking anime designs and these awful 3D-models they use for action sequences just don’t do it for me. |
Turns out, director Akira Amemiya is a massive Transformers fan.
To such an insane degree- every human character in SSSS Gridman thus far is based on a Transformers design from the "Shattered Glass" alternate universe. https://www.allspark.com/forums/topi...attered-glass/ |

And then there's other Ultraman/Gridman references on top of that. None of this distracts from the show, btw. Seen the first 2 episodes. It's a good time. |
So I guess it is safe to say as of episode 2 that the four suit characters, Samurai Calibur, Max, Borr, and Vitt are avatar forms of the 4 assist weapons. Also, like I said before, all four of them have been in tokusatsu as notable roles.
https://i.imgur.com/ubH9PRE.png Would like to add that Ryosuke Takahashi who voices Samurai Calibur was also a guest role in Kamen Rider Wizard(somewhere between 10 and 20) and Aoi Yuki who voices Borr was Mari's younger self in Faiz. |
Could we have a new gridman live action show ?
|
just watched the first two episodes. The first half of the first episode is kinda dull but definitely picks up in the second half. Second episode was good.
Fun fact for you all, Maaya Uchida (who sings the ending theme 'youthful beautiful') is Hiroyo Hakase from AkibaRanger |
I think I’ll have to eat my words from last week because episode 2 was really good. I didn’t see the cute little girl being a bad guy coming at all and I like how twisted she is. Teacher bumps into me and doesn't apologize? Whelp, here's a giant monster coming your way. And the twist that the city repairs and everyone forgets about the battles except that the people who died stay dead – wow.
I also really enjoy the "true" Gridman and his assist guys, the Samurai dude is hilarious, the scene where he tries to enter the shop and his swords get caught in the doorframe is hilarious. The action is quite cool too - if this show keeps on going like this I might actually become a fan. |

Third episode was an interesting one. We're introduced to an advanced kaiju and we get a look at how Rikka and Shou really feel about Yuta when things seemingly go south for Gridman.
Like all the episodes prior, this still feels like an actual existing toku series given an exact anime adaptation. And the Max Gridman fight was absolutely fantastic; Had me grinning like mad the moment the insert song kicked in. |
Another great episode.
I could point out the characters, the action-scenes or the animation: But what I want to highlight is that I love how they handle the combinations and general mecha design. I noticed it with their short back then too where the robot had a half orange head with a screw in the back which was clearly inspired by the original toy with its translucent plastic light piping feature, but looking at Max Gridman... I really like how you can see the clips, how "simple" the transformation is and how it all makes sense. Some shows like Netflix' Voltron go a long way to spice up the transformations sequence by adding extra machinery and stuff but with Gridman the panels just open, the arms go inside, done. They take they toy and animate it, that's it. It's simple yet effective and as a collector I really appreciate how close this is to an actual physical object. They still take their liberties for action scenes but I really like how they translate toys into designs. Or in this case, design the mechas with real-world limitations so toy makers can translate it into plastic. |

The main villain so far is pretty irredeemable from her actions etc. Does not matter really what her reasoning for becoming this is, she is a flat out monster, her treatment of her own creations with actual intelligence is flat out disgusting.
Perfect for a toku villain. |
I'm enjoying this show so far. They've really nailed the toku "feel" but with a Trigger anime twist.

I love Akane as a villain. She's so childish, petty, selfish and unhinged that she's an utter joy to watch.
Also loved this episode's tease of Gridman's final form and how they can't currently achieve it until Junk gets some kind of upgrade. Nice way to slightly curve off of the usual formula of showing forms in order. |
We have a good few seconds of Rikka's thighs.
|
Oh I hope Akane gets a severly painful death, she pretty much deserves it just from the first 3 episodes.

Not gonna lie, I would actual prefer it if the new version of the classic theme was the opening song, the one they're using now does nothing for me really. Very mediocre song IMO.
Anyways, okay-ish episode, I had the most fun seeing the gang transporting the Junk around. Setup was rather boring, and the Kaiju this week was super lame. I like Buster Gridman but I hope they use it better next time. They kinda hint at it too. |

Apparently there's a theory going around that Rikka is pregnant and that's why she is mad that Yuta doesn't remember anything, he doesn't remember that he's the father or something, also I am not sure if it's worth spoiler-tagging an unconfirmed fan theory.
|
I’ve been watching this show and every Saturday I’m stoked to catch the next episode. I’m really curious to the kaiju anti and how they are going to expand on him.
|
So Borr Male and now I’m confused why he has full on female voice in the dub
