Uchu Sentai KyuRanger Episode 2: "Let's Go! Phantom Thief BN Team" Discussion
The newly-assembled team heads out to find the remaining four KyuTama, when they are confronted by a pair of thieves!
As always you can view this episode via live stream on Saturday by heading over to Taima TV. They play other miscellaneous programs up until the live broadcast starts. Live Streams of the Superhero Time block start at 5:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on Saturdays. |
For someone with a scale of justice motif, Balance really, REALLY like betraying people.

Episode 2 Cameos
http://i.imgur.com/1rpbySH.png Starting from the left: chief producer Takashi Mochizuki manga artist Masato Hisa(designer for the show, he drew that awesome official artwork of the Kyurangers earlier this year) writer Nobuhiro Mouri producer Shiori Odaka |
Man Josuke's voice actor is energetic as ever. Can't believe he used to be Ultraman Belial. I love the part where Gold and Red assemble their weapons.
And the ending theme just got even funnier when you see that Naga Ray is the most excited. And is Stinger a KKK member?! |
This episode really jumped up my hype even more now. Episode 3 looks to be very interesting with how Orange will join the team.
|
It was okay. I like Balance and Naga, and I didn't remember to mention it last week but I like how they keep the illusion of being in space and on different planets up. Yes its just people with blue or green makeup, some costumes and a CGI background, but it works for me.
So yeah, I could’ve actually enjoyed this episode. If not for this fucking awful Red. Why. Toss that garbage in the trash and have an actual character as the lead and this show would be really cool. It's not even necessarily his background, an adventurer who moves forward by getting incredibly lucky isn't a bad setup, it’s just that the protagonist is this dreadful screaming idiot again. I would say "It's Sentai, it's a kids show, what else could I expect" but I watched Zyuohger and Yamato was a thing. He wasn't perfect but a much, much better character. I will continue watching this for now because there is some good stuff going on and I'm interested to see where this goes once all 9 Kyurangers are there, but man if Lucky stays this fucking annoying I will just drop the show. I see no reason to torture myself with this fool every week. |
Same here. It was a good Episode, and once again I gotta commend this show for its worldbuilding. I'm really liking the way we get to explore different planets, and how they have a set up hierarchy within the villain factions that are in different constellations of the universe. As for our new characters, Naga(AKA Chase 2.0) easily has room for growth within the Series, while Balance seems like he'll probably not be as prominent, but is a possible character that can easily sway to more antagonistic decisions in the future(HAH! Cuz Scales...)
But yea.....THIS EPISODE.....I tried, I REALLY tried to give Lucky a pass last Episode, but....SIGH, this one just cements it. The guy frickin tosses something in the hologram of the universe, JUST SO HAPPENS to find the exact right planet they needed, JUST SO HAPPENS to run RIGHT into the two future team members, and IMMEDIATELY "knows" that they're the ones?!! WHAT KINDA BS IS THAT?!!! So not only does this guy have ridiculous luck, but now he just has insane prediction powers as well?! IIRC Balance & Naga didn't even have their Kyutama on them at the time, so how?!! This Episode confirms something I was worried about could be a potential flaw for this Series: Lucky=INFINITE DEUS EX MACHINAS. If Lucky just keeps on doing ridiculous things like these, then the show will lose interest, considering how they won't really have much to struggle for, since apparently Lucky can just toss a rock & get answers out of their situation. When I said this show had balls & could either sway to be very good or very bad, I wasn't at all taking into factor THIS ANNOYANCE OF A RED RANGER.... |

I know its just really early in the series but despite so much shit toei throw for audience, i just can't feel it.
maybe zyuohnger isn't good example because the writer is confused what to writer for the half of series but at least i invested on very first half of series until majority of the episodes is just fooder silly episodes. I fear the series hurt by this lucky guy, i mean for now none of the member really stands out as character in my opinion they just "there" Come on Toei why your good design heroes always hurt by your ass stories |
I finally got around to watching this week's episode. Oddly, it felt more rushed than the first one. Meet the new guys. Decide to steal with them. Betrayal! Unearned emotional moment (ironically being a moment of actual emotions). Another emotional moment! Double betrayal! New recruits! Fight. Robo fight. Poor Green! Lucky is annoying. Credits.
Overall, I wasn't as enamored as I was with the previous entry. Balance has joined Lucky and dog boy at the bottom of the character heap. (Also, the Overtime guys should know it's never lupus. :D) I am enjoying the world building and some of the camera angles and the like make things seem a little fresher than they might otherwise. The robo stuff was, mostly, pretty good this week, though not as great as last week. I'm slightly cooled on the show but, at least for the time being, I'm keen to stick with it for the long haul. Also, this episode did convince me even more that I really want Kyuren-Oh. |
So...This wasn't very good. Should've been a 2 parter.
This episode moved just as fast as last episode, and that's not a good thing because I don't know, or care, about any of our protagonists. I can't get invested in Lucky dangling over a pit of smelted metal because I don't give a fuck about him. I can't get invested in Naga and Balance's brief betrayal between each other because they were just introduced 6 minutes ago and I know fuck all about them. It seems Orange is getting an episode all his own, so that's nice. However, that won't make things better because, despite being 3 episodes in by then, we still have so little on our cast due to their piss poor introductions that the majority of the episode will be dedicated to introducing and establishing Sasori Orange, so it won't fix the actual problem. This series is pushing things. Lucky is still as obnoxious as ever, which is making wanting to keep with the show even more difficult. I don't want to dislike the series because the premise and visuals are nice, but I have to be honest in saying that I don't even want to watch the next episode, because I fully anticipate more of the same... ...The bit where Lucky shows how to construct the weapon with Balance was fun. |
I generally agree with the last few posts. I still really like the ideas this show is going for, but the execution is sorely lacking and it mostly comes down to the characters. Lucky is just goddamn terrible; he's some horrible eldritch abomination of Ban's screaming, Daigo's plot powers, and the guy from Ninninger's catch phrase. I'm not averse to luck being a super power - Longshot is one of my favorite X-Men - but when it's used as the sole driver of the show's plot it becomes highly problematic. Couple that with the character being an obnoxious void of charisma and he becomes highly grating even before he starts yelling "Yuusha Lucky!" every third sentence (five times this episode, six counting the movie trailer - yes, I counted). If I drop the show before episode five it's going to be entirely Lucky's fault.
Not that the other characters are much better. Naga and Balance got some basic development here, but the other four are still completely blank slates. I have no idea what any of them are like outside of some very, very basic ideas: Hammy is rude, Lupus is... I don't know, loyal, maybe? Yellow makes food puns. Black is... there. At least the new guys have basic personalities, even if Balance is almost as annoying as Lucky. So yeah, the cool concept for the show is completely wasted on these bland and/or obnoxious characters. Thankfully we still have the commander and Orange Ranger left to go, because adding even more characters will surely help bring the existing ones into better focus. I've got a couple more episodes in me before I feel like I won't be able to muster up the energy to care, so maybe things can still turn around. |
Yeah, this episode was a bit rushed, and really needed to be a two-parter. I have to admit though, I actually enjoy most of the characters. I really like the Naga and Balance duo, and how Balance was just exploiting Naga in the beginning. I will agree that Lucky's "Yuusha Lucky!" is a bit...... grating, but for some reason I haven't been that bothered by it (1000X better than "if-you-dare-say-the-weather-is-bad-I'll-scream-how-dare-you-mess-with-this-planet" Yamato). Also, I thought that I was really going to dislike Lucky's luck streak, but honestly I think it makes sense. Like they said, how are they going to travel the entire universe to find the rest of the Kyurangers? Lucky's luck-ex-machina helps that along (I'll admit, it's dumb, but it's better than them just stumbling onto a planet and just "happening" to find more Kyuranger members). That being said, I think that it's a bit early to judge on how the entire season will be, and I really like where this is going.
I also really like that the villains have corresponding constellations as well, hopefully we might see some villain Kyurangers in the future. |

Yamato only said that line once an episode, and sometimes it wasn't even him.
Lucky drops "YUUSHA LUCKY!" once every 5 minutes. We had 2 "Don't mess with this planet!"in Zyuohger by episode 2. It was basically part of their role call. We've had over 8 Yuusha Lucky's already. Trust me. It's going to get old. Very old. Considering finding other members, here: Tenbin Gold and Hebitsukai Silver were thieves, right? Have them partaking in thievery and Lucky wanting to apprehend them. The rest of the team basically says "No, other Kyurangers are more important than a couple of robbers," but Lucky goes down anyway because fireball red and confronts them. Have Balance recognize him, and try to convince him in helping steal the jewel with a fake Robin Hood act, and proceed as normal. Of course, there'd have to be a series off coincidences (Why were they in X system, at that specific planet, to find those two), but it would be a hell of a lot better than literally throwing a dart through a projector, going to that planet, and just randomly bumping into them and immediately declaring them as the next Kyurangers. |
Somehow, this episode did a pretty good job at winning me over on this season. Maybe I just needed time to adjust to the new characters and setting; but everything seemed to work better. I also thought the duo of Naga and Balance was very cool. Lucky is still pretty annoying but I think this episode was a step in the right direction despite its short comings.

Wow, for a show I was expecting to immediately get loved to bits by everyone the way Ex-Aid has, the reception around here seems rather negative. I can sort of relate, but I don't think the flaws have been working hard enough against the show for me to not enjoy it. This episode was also a HUGE improvement on last week, in my opinion. To elaborate:
- YOSSHA RAKKI~ - I think the pacing this time around was a lot nicer. The story still moves fast, but it had a single plot instead of like three, which is the important thing. - So, one of the things I actually really liked about the premiere (that I guess I'm somewhat alone on) is that it gave me a solid idea of who everybody was. Just basic personality traits, but they were clearly displayed. This week I think did a really great job of letting the viewer get to know Balance and Naga. I like how the both of them, much like Garu, got their little arc with Lucky, and unlike him, it wasn't just five minutes of a larger episode, so it worked way better. The whole twist of having the human(ish) guy be the one without emotions is kind of cute, and between that and Balance's faulty morals, they're both set up for series-spanning character arcs on top of the development they got just this episode. Pretty quality stuff. - YOSSHA RAKKI~ - The first two or three episodes of a Sentai tend to have a bigger budget so time will tell but I am absolutely ADORING the show's commitment to being an honest-to-gosh space adventure show. That is beyond cool to me, and I really hope we don't just settle down on Earth once the Kyurangers are assembled. The setup with a MotW governing each planet under Jark Matter's control suggests they do intend to keep up with this, though, which would make me so happy. - I didn't mention it last week, but I actually kind of adore the ending theme for how borderline avant-garde it is. I may miss my eagle puns and lyrics that actually thematically connect to the show, but I can definitely live with this for a year. - YOSSHA RA- *ahem* I think Lucky is fine. I genuinely thought he was pretty lame last week but after thinking about it some more and seeing this episode, I really think, outside of that catchphrase, complaints about him are a little overblown. A little. I think it's absolutely fine to have a cute little moment where he jump-starts the plot by accident, and him immediately happening into our two new recruits (who were making quite a bit of noise at the time, mind you) is the kind of dramatic convenience that happens in basically any show, so I can't get too worked up about it. If he's still lucking his way into good things during major plot events I'll be pretty upset, but as of right now, I'm cool with it. I also like his interactions with Naga this week, showing a side to him that isn't JUST a screaming idiot. So yeah, I think that about covers it. This show actually has quite the tough act to follow with how much I ended up liking Zyuohger, but I'm getting more into it now. Hopefully it'll only get better from here. Quote:

I did like this episode more as well, felt way less cramped. Still a little too fast-paced, but now we're just going at Mach 2 instead of light-speed.
Lucky's still kind of annoying, but, like the pacing, they're toning down his madness a little bit. Plus... other than Garu, who seems to be the only one who thinks of him as "the boss" at this point, the rest of the team just seems to be... tolerating him. He's just the weird new guy at the moment, who's also not too bright. Also, Balance and Naga are actually pretty funny. I dunno, I smiled at their antics. Definitely fearing them getting the shaft when it comes to screen-time, because I at least want to see more of them. Anyway, Champ getting some focus in the next episode alongside Stinger's debut should be interesting. I'm just going to assume Raptor's going to share her episode with another one of the team as well, and you can quote me on that. |
One more mild point of contention: I don't like the blue chest on Balance. I prefer the mostly golden look he sported before, with only the blue stripe.
|
With you on that. Would of been nicer if he was just pure gold beforehand and added the stripe afterwards, but, oh well.
|
You know what, this episode could've been so much better if they cut out Lucky. I mean, the pacing is a bit on the fast side but the whole world-building and spectacle of science-fiction/space fantasy made me forget how break neck it truly was. Plus, this episode is actually slower than the first.
Balance should've kept his previous color scheme. I really like the duo he makes with Naga. A basic Spock vs McCoy thing contradicted by the robot being emotional while the organic being stoic. But as again, Lucky ruined everything for me. And what do the rest even do? What does Hammy do? Or Champ? They need love too, guys! |
Balance is really cool and I love his personality. Naga is alright, but the whole emotionless thing is really weird. This was a great episode overall. I've been craving Kyuranger so badly that I've been watching the episodes multiple times.
Also I really don't see the need for Balance to get the blue paint on his chest. I would've preferred that he gets a jacket since they made it work for Raptor. |
This episode was better than last because it didn't give me a headache but it was really boring. I know we have to give this show slack until episode 5 for when the nine rangers are together but damn. Also how they get their kyutamas I find to be stupid because Naga and Balance get theirs from a random jewel that they wanted to steal and for some reason it spits out two kyutamas. The first episode made it seem like they were meteors pretty much. Once you are chosen a kyutama will come striking down from space which I did find cool but now no.
Seriously hope things change once they are all together because the characters seem to go like this: Lucky- a child Hammy- finds random things funny for some reason Champ- the muscle which I hope that is changed with the next episode Yellow- food and food puns Garu- um a loyal dog I guess I mean besides his very rushed background I can't think what his character is Balance- does what he wants from what I can tell Naga- he is Sai from Naruto speaking of which my guesses for the next two Orange- from the opening and the tiny bit of him just walking I will guess he is a lone wolf type or Sasuke Raptor- not sure yet bet I will guess Sakura which I hope is when Sakura got better worse case scenario she is Kanon and if that is the case then we are fucked One good thing I can give to this show is it does really well at being a big toy commercials because I kinda want to weapons and the mecha now. Better than the first episode. It was fast paced but it didn't feel like the first episode which seemed like 2 episodes mashed together.
Balance and Naga are an interesting duo. Balance is pretty great! The setup for the Jark Matter Bosses makes me think maybe the Kyurangers won't just end up on Earth for 90% of the show like everyone expects? Maybe? I'm enjoying this show! YOSSHA RAKI! |

This thread probably has the most negative reactions to this episodes that I've seen thus far. Granted most of it is towards Lucky which I kinda get but to be honest Lucky doesn't seem any worst than the other red rangers with this kinda archetype. In fact I actually think his whole extremely good luck is a pretty clever explanation for a lot of the plot contrivances that tokusatsu shows tend to have.
While the pacing was still a little fast, the episode did give a nice introduction to both Naga and Balance as a duo though video right here has me completely sold on them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IissYzEWhgA Hopefully they will still continue the outer space aspects of the show as it really does help with the variety and settings. |
I thought this episode was actually really good, probably one of the better Sentai episodes I've seen since ToQger. (granted, I couldn't bring myself to care about Zyuohger to watch more than 24 episodes)
While I disliked the first episode because it felt so rushed and Lucky was overbearing as a character, this one balanced things in a way that I enjoyed. Yeah, the other characters didn't get a ton of focus, but their in battle dialogue and actions felt like it gave them some much needed character. I especially loved seeing Sparda jump to protect Hammy - it's not a huge thing in the grand scheme but little moments like that are always very important to me. I'm cool with things if this is the format the show wants to take - split the group up a bit and have one off being the main focus of the episode while the other is fighting but still getting those little moments. Lucky was also so much more bearable in this episode. I don't know what happened to him but it feels like they toned him down enough that I don't mind him too much now. If you're gonna have a character whose schtick is "everything goes good for him and he's the best ever" I'd much rather see the execution of the character the second episode gave us as opposed to the first. My expectations for Naga were already pretty low so when he turned out to not only be decent but actually a pretty fun character, I was totally excited. His actor so far seems to nail the character with very few moments of awkwardness in there. I can't wait to see more of the relationship between him and Balance, they make such a good team. Also, little things this episode did made me love it more than the first. The fact that it's not set on Earth wasn't too big in the first episode but the setting in this one was pretty great. Yeah, you're still basically in a factory with CGI and overlaid graphics, but it still feels different enough from a regular earth setting that I totally felt these guys were on a different planet. My only worry is that this might go away sooner rather than later. Juspion did this as well but it only lasted for about four episodes in that show. Here's to hoping Kyuranger can keep the characters away from Earth for a nice long while. (also, really cool to see the monsters have Inro, it's such an interesting way of bringing history and pop culture into the show) |

This episode does a few things very well that are super encouraging... 1) Character conflict. Sentai often refuses to put any characters on the team in conflict with each other, especially in early episodes. This episode puts Naga and Balance in conflict with each other AND with Lucky. Great work. 2) Heroes with shades of gray. Sentai almost never gives us heroes that aren't squeaky clean good guys. Part of what was so refreshing about Gokaiger was how the heroes were pirates who often acted selfishly. Similarly, Naga and Balance (especially Balance) are not great guys. They're thieves. They're selfish. They betray each other for petty reasons. This was crazy refreshing. 3) An in-story explanation for why it's so easy for the heroes to find each other. Lucky's super-luck is an elegant plot device. It solves questions like "how, out of every planet in the universe, did they choose the one with two Kyurangers on it?" before they can even be asked. Without the need to contrive solutions to these logical problems, the show is free to spend its time developing characters and showing us cool action scenes. Which brings me to... 4) Holy shit the action was actually awesome! Fukuzawa is stepping his action game up big time. The action this episode had a wide variety of camera set-ups (including some classic Sentai extreme wide shots, which I've been missing in the last few seasons), it utilized a few new visual tricks they briefly experimented with in Zyuohger (the body-mounted POV cams and the fast-moving drone tracking shots), the locations were really good, and we got some interesting parallel action. Lackluster fight scenes has been one of my main criticisms of ToQger, Ninninger, and Zyuohger -- it's nice to see some clear improvement and increased creativity. 5) Interesting subversion of robot/human buddy tropes. When a human and a robot are partners, it's usually the robot who has no emotions and the human who acts as a catalyst for the robot to develop feelings. Here it's reversed! Balance is a flamboyant, OTT, hyper-emotional character, and Naga is the unfeeling logician. It's a small thing, but this is such a clever inversion of a classic trope, and it's played perfectly. 6) The super fast pacing. I'm hearing a lot of complaints that the first two episodes are overstuffed. Yes, there's a lot going on. But it's all well balanced and effective, IMO. And frankly, give me "too much stuff" any damn day, if the alternative is a slavish devotion to the same, standard, simple Sentai story tropes we see repeated year after year after year. Some say these episodes moved too fast, but I think the writers are just being very efficient in how they parcel out information. Ultimately, though, the best thing about Kyuranger so far is how it manages to balance an irreverent tone (relative to other Sentai) with real drama (Balance's betrayal! Naga's angry outburst!) and comedy that's actually funny. I honestly can't say enough good things about this episode. Sad to hear that so many of y'all don't feel the same way. |

Though... I do think people are missing out when they don't enjoy something. They are missing out on joy, happiness, excitement. I'd prefer that to disappointment any day. |
Quote:
That does sort of imply that people who don't enjoy the same things as you are lesser for missing that experience. But people get joy from different things and homogenized entertainment would, in my opinion at least, be a nightmare. I get what you're saying, but it's sort of looking down on people with different interests. It's not like people really choose everything they enjoy on a conscious level. Eh, just a thought. |
Quote:
And also, as soon as I decide to not watch this any further I have more time to do things I actually like, so instead of missing out on those good feelings I just get them elsewhere ;) |
Well, naturally I always prefer to see the best in things, but I definitely can't blame anyone for not liking something.
That being said, please forgive me while I argue some more about why this show is better than a lot of you are giving it credit for. I mean, if you find Kyuranger genuinely bad and just want to move on, more power to you, but since it seems like most of the negative voices here are from people who genuinely want to be enjoying it, I think looking at it from a different perspective would really help. Quote:
On that note, I'm also really surprised to hear people finding the characters total blank slates. Part of the efficiency of the writing so far is that pretty much every line of dialogue from everyone suggests their personality, making use of what little time some of them get. Just take Spada for example. He's said maybe like, 10 lines in the whole two episodes he's been in, but between being the one to suggest retreating during the middle of this episode, the way he immediately jumps in to calm Balance down when Hammy agitates him, it's clear he's meant to "the level-headed, chill one", right to down to using food metaphors in a way that suggests cooking is some kind of zen philosophy to him. Given how many characters the show is going to have to work with all at once, this is some promisingly sharp writing for the group. See also how Garu respects and sticks up for Lucky, since he's the whole reason he became Ookami Blue, whereas the rest of the team is mostly just tolerating his presence and are even annoyed by him running off on his own. It's all really solid stuff. I'd also like to point out that Lucky's plot powers aren't used as any sort of deus ex machina here. He's actually totally going to die for a second (which he even lampshades), and it's Balance, making a decision that moves his character along entirely of his own agency, that saves the day. It seems like the show is already being careful not to have Lucky's luck undermine the tension in any way, which, again, is very promising. His hunch that these guys are Kyurangers pays off not because he's innately right, or because it's just destiny or something, but because these two guys actually do prove themselves (more or less) to be worthy of the job. |
The problem is just that it's not a good story so far.
Efficiency doesn't make something good by default. It's just the most expedient way to do something properly. Having Lucky throw a dart through a projector to find the next 2 Kyurangers was the most efficient way to contrive a reason for them to encounter. It also completely took me out of the scene because I was too busy rolling my eyes. I lost immersion because they took the fastest way out, rather than a more clever or humorous way. Spada, Hammy, and Champ are more set pieces than anything else to me right now. Raptor has displayed more character than those 3. I can somewhat see where Spada's clear headed tendencies are, but the other 2 really feel like they need to wave signs saying "Insert character here" for all they've impacted me. Garu was a complete rush job, and no one's defense of Lucky has convinced me that he's tolerable. By having to make use of body language, Raptor has managed to define a character far more clearly than "Food puns" or whatever the fuck Hammy and Champ are doing. Naga and Balance are pretty enjoyable, and I'm glad. |
Well, all my complaints have the caveat "I'm still looking forward to watching the rest of this." I'm just seeing these as serious potential problems.
So, on to good stuff. I love that the bad guys aren't pulling the whole "I'll let you live, for now" cliché, but rather our heroes are only still in one-piece because they ran the other freaking way when they realized they were out-matched. That's cool, and it helps establish Jark Matter as a competent threat. Also, the Kyurangers are actually the ones pushing the plot forward, forcing the villains to react rather than the other way around. Hoping that trend continues as well, because we could see the whole MotW format flipped on it's head, with the Kyurangers picking the fights while Jark Matter responds. Another thing I'm hoping continues is for Lucky's, er, luck to not always be good. He's had just as many bad things randomly happen as good, just the fact that he doesn't have a catchphrase for those makes it not stick in your head as much. I mean, in the first episode alone he crashes twice, one of which causing his speeder bike to blow up underneath him, nearly gets mauled by Garu and almost freezes to death. Not all of which was solved by a swing of luck in the other direction. Oh, and that skit with him, Balance and Naga? I want to see more disapproving Lucky, that shit is funny. |

I'm enjoying Kyuranger a lot. I wish you all could join me in my enthusiasm. That's literally all I meant. Sheesh! Quote:
I can't fault people for wanting more connective tissue, but that kind of procedural logic bores the hell out of me. My philosophy is to put the characters where the story needs them as fast as possible. I don't care how they get there, just get them to the highest point of drama, in the most effective way you can. (Within reason, obviously -- John Wick can't just show up on the moon without sufficient explanation.) That's why Lucky's luck works super well for me: it's a shortcut that sidesteps the parts of a story I usually find boring. I am always willing to sacrifice strict adherence to logic for narrative/emotional expediency. Others may not be so lenient -- we just have different priorities. Quote:
Taking the above into account, in appx 30min of story we've been presented four fleshed-out characters (Naga, Balance, Garu, and -- love him or hate him -- Lucky) and four characters that are less developed, but still distinct archetypes (with the hint that one of these characters, Taurus Black, will be developed more in the next episode). That's actually very impressive, IMO, and it's something many, many Sentai shows just straight-up don't do over their entire 50 episode runs! (Ohranger, I'm looking at you!) In light of the criticism that the show is moving too quickly, I find some dissonance in the complaints that all of the characters lack development by the end of episode freaking two. There's a desire among some for Kyuranger to slow down, but when the creators give us a slow burn on a handful of the characters, those same people are all like, "too slow! This is a dealbreaker!" Seems to me like Kyuranger is in a Kobayashi Maru-type situation with these folks. But like -- we all knew there were gonna be nine characters, and we all presumably understand the constraints of the medium. Due to Kyuranger's concept, obviously some characters were always gonna take longer to develop than others. The "errmuhgawd shallow characters" complaint seems... fishy, I guess? But hey, that's just me. Quote:
Another way to phrase Lucky's super-luck would be to call it super-coincidence. As long as his powers get the characters into trouble, instead of providing an easy escape hatch from their dilemmas, it's not technically bad writing. (Pixar agrees with me, and we all like Pixar, right? :lol (see rule #20)). When Lucky's powers are used to get the characters out of trouble, it will be cheating -- and when that happens, as it did in episode one when Lucky was drifting through space, I'll be happy to call it out as bad writing. But like, I'm also not here to subject Sentai's writing to the same critical scrutiny I would like, an Edward Albee play. All I want is a fresh, fun take on the Sentai tropes I love. And so far, Kyuranger is knocking it out of the park. |
