Ultraman vs Super Sentai
does ultraman cater more to older audience than sentai or is it the other way round? which is more iconic too?
|
I'd say Sentai is probably more iconic. But as for your other question, I got no clue. I watched Nexus as a kid, but I can't remember any of it, and I haven't seen any other Ultramn series. So yeah...
|
On a worldwide scale Sentai is more iconic simply because of Power Rangers, but in Japan I don't think its so obvious. Ultraman seems pretty iconic even without being on screens year after year.

Well, Ultraman started in 1966.
http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/252/44086581.jpg Super Sentai started in 1975. http://media.tumblr.com/7acf506212c6...Nxf1qz4rgp.jpg They both cater to children, but us adults still love these shows. I'm 36 and I've been watching these shows since I was 4. - while in Japan. :D Over-all the most iconic is Ultraman especially in Japan. World-wide, like ZeoRangerV said, it's Super Sentai. Thanks to Mighty Morphing Power Rangers. :D http://photos.wikimapia.org/p/00/02/14/78/31_full.jpeg Here's the Coordinates: 35°38'36"N 39°36'33"E Check it out on Google Maps or Earth. It's on Ultraman Street :D |
Super Sentai has nothing on Ultraman in terms of being iconic. Hell, Sentai wouldn't even exist if Ultraman hadn't happened.
As for the other question, both are aimed primarily at little kids, although Ultraman's been reaching out more to nostalgic older fans since Mebius (or arguably Max). |
In his native land (Japan... not the Land of Light...), Ultraman is one of the top pop culture icons of all time. He's roughly the equivalent of Superman here in the States.
Worldwide, I would say that the Super Sentai may have the edge, not just because of the wide exposure of Power Rangers in the North America, but also the pre-PR Super Sentai shows which were dubbed into Spanish or Brazilian and played in South America. Much like how to a generation of Hawaiians, Kikaider is "the" tokusatsu hero. |
Ultraman is one of the most iconic characters of Japan, Sentai is cool and all, but the Ultras win this fight.

I do know that here in the States it seems like Ultra fans skew older; feedback I get from the Ultra stuff I cover on my podcast almost always skews older. |

From my experience Ultraman is a more iconic Japanese hero than Sentai/Rangers in here. |
