Hey everyone, guess what time it is!
Well, with a single episode left, I figure it's time to take a moment to specifically appreciate the insanely good job Toei has done not leaking out information, deliberately or otherwise, about all the cool twists in this show. Obviously anything that got a mass-release toy was going to be in a catalog, but beyond that, from what I understand, they managed to keep most of the returning actors a secret right up until
the preview for the episode they were in aired
, and in general, those episode previews always avoided showing too much, which doesn't always happen with Kamen Rider.
Or maybe it just goes to show how packed every episode of Zi-O is that even with the all the stuff that does get spoiled, there's always more to see. I've been slightly uneasy with how Zi-O's endgame has been playing out for a few different reasons, but this episode was amazing, and while I'm still not totally convinced one more episode is enough time to do it in, it's definitely starting to look like everything is going to tie together very nicely.
The only thing I didn't like about this episode was Chase dying again, and paradoxically I also liked that he died again. It's somewhat strange that he's here to begin with, and the way he's tied into the actual plot and themes is bordering on tenuous, but it's paying tribute to what is possibly the absolute most memorable character death in the history of Heisei Rider, and while I'm not sure how deliberate this was, it's cool that Geiz telling him he has friends is a total reversal from how in Drive he genuinely didn't understand how much Gou cared about him in the end. Again, I'm not totally sure what they were going for, but it seems similar to the resolution to the Blade episodes in that it's a sort of apology for how depressing that part of Drive was. Part of what's strange about this all is I don't know whether or not the finale will have any surprise guest stars, or if Chase is it. I highly doubt Joe Odagiri is gonna pop out from around a corner and give Sougo a thumbs up or anything, but it's not unthinkable to me we'll see someone.
That's only one facet of what happens in this episode, though, and the rest is solid gold. Our little overlord has come a
long
way from his humble beginnings as a bizarre and possibly delusional high school student, and his characterization throughout shines. Especially in his scene with his uncle, which just like every other time, really injects a lot of heart back into all the craziness, and keeps the show feeling grounded and human, despite how nonsensical so much of it is.
I also
loved
the use of Trinity here. I'm not gonna lie, I've actually been in love with that form since its debut. I firmly believe it to way cooler than Grand Zi-O, especially factoring in the mileage each of them has gotten out of their respective gimmicks in-series, and this just pushes it over the edge. The explanation for why it can more or less stand up to Oma Zi-O (for all you power level peeps, I'm pretty sure he still would've won if that fight had went on any longer) capitalizes on the symbolism I always felt the form had, and even though "the power of friendship" is just about the most trite thing imaginable, I can't pretend it was anything but satisfying here.
And on the subject of friends, Zi-O has really reminded me that absolutely nobody can compete with Tsukasa and Kaitou when it comes to being... whatever they are to each other. It's kind of its own thing, hence the lack of competition. The point is Diend showing up to help Decade like that is very true to how those characters are meant to be written, and Kaitou's time powers were another in the long line of satisfying payoffs going on in this episode.
One thing that can't bother me personally but is probably a bit of a missed opportunity though. It would've been a decent band-aid solution for Rider's continuity woes to suggest that the post-Decade shows that (
mostly seemed to when squinting
) take place in one world were the result of Swartz's plan partially taking effect or something? Like maybe some previous effort he made resulted in a bunch but not all Riders' worlds getting jammed together and being stuck that way until Sougo became Zi-O. There's still a lot that doesn't account for, but for some reason that idea came into my head right as Tsukasa started explaining the worlds merging again. I have to be clear that I really don't think Zi-O has any obligation to smooth these things out, and there almost certainly wasn't enough time for that just in this episode, but if this there's one thing that's apparent to me when I read these threads, it's that plenty of people would be very, very happy to see some of this stuff cleared up.
Anyway, I'm really,
really
looking forward to next week.
