Saber is definitely proving to be a show that's subtly "off" in a lot of odd ways, but I'm also still loving what I'm seeing. Fukuda is being a flake as is usual, I guess, so despite it only being episode 3, this one was written by Nobuhiro Mouri, who of course worked with Fukuda on Ghost, and more recently wrote what a lot of people will argue are the better stretches of Zi-O. My personal image of him is as a reliably competent guest writer who also occasionally knocks a story out of the park. This one definitely felt firmly on the "reliably competent" side of things.
Above all else, this is clearly the big Buster introduction episode, and it nailed that much for sure. Ryou is just *big* in every sense of the word, and has a great sense of presence that also owes a lot to Shoujirou Nakazawa's direction and the talents of both of his actors. The script is maybe doing the minority of the work here, if I'm being honest. There are some awkward notes, like having a cold open before Buster's first scene, which is clearly
meant
to be an in medias res cold open, hence Touma and Rintarou just being on an adventure without explanation.
There's nothing that I felt was a huge deal breaker though, and I certainly appreciated the relatively subdued pacing. That part is likely down to being part one of a larger story, which is probably a smart move for a show this tight on space. I don't think I'd mind seeing the usual two-parter formula being applied to this series going forward.
And since the story is mostly setup, it's hard to say too much about, but I did think it was
interesting
setup, for what it's worth, working in both things for part two and some bigger questions for the show as a whole. In the moment, the most fun in the episode was definitely from Touma's inexplicably wholesome interactions with his fellow Riders, like there was a memo about this franchise nobody but Buster and Calibur got.
Saber and Blades especially have this real harmonious chemistry that doesn't help the Sentai comparisons, but is making for some fun fight scenes that seem to be stressing the creative fantastical powers more than raw and exhilarating choreography. Which isn't to say that they're totally forgoing the latter, either; it's just that the above average swordplay gets a little lost in the chaos sometimes. Ordinarily, I'd be the one mourning the days of more restrained Rider shows, but for Saber, I'm really embracing the whole "beautiful mess" aspect of it, because it seems like the show itself is too, and it's definitely making for a good time so far.
