As promised, here's my review of my first few hours of gameplay as I assume the roles of Double and Joker in a quest to liberate Sector City's City Sector.
WARNING:
May contain minor story spoilers!
Combat:
The first thing I noticed is that the fights are a lot like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which released around the same time. You have a gauge, RP (Rider Points), which depletes when you evade and use strong and unique attacks. I don't usually feel like I need to worry about running out but the boss fights do force me to use it more sparingly.
Counterattacking is very useful! Doing it right is a 1 hit K.O. on every non-boss enemy I've encountered so far, it replenishes HP and adds a generous boost to the fight score. It's a perfectly valid strat to get SSS scores through this alone.
Finishers expend a special EX gauge so there's a limit to how much you can use them, which means it's no longer broken and repetitive like it was in the Battride War games. The EX gauge encourages you to use finishers as they were intended, to finish off or at least deal significant damage to a difficult enemy. It makes the finishers feel a lot more climactic with the same kind of excitement they bring to the show.
Form changing is fun but not as easy to master as the trailers make it look. I found this out the hard way. Even though one form might be super OP at one specific thing, it might be impractical at everything else. This was the case when I tried using CycloneMetal in the Smilodon boss fight. It was useful for deflecting his fireball attacks but its weak and strong attacks were difficult to use. When I realized its disadvantage, I switched back to CycloneJoker for offensive attacks. So far, this is the most damage I have sustained in a boss fight, although fortunately I was still able to secure the SSS score.
Exploration:
The narrow corridors and frequent cutscenes between the player character and AI (whose name is played as a joke when Shoutarou feels dumb that he didn't get the most basic pun until Phillip deduced it, which I thought was humorous) remind me a lot of my experience with the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy. Since I'm probably one of the few people who enjoyed those games, this doesn't actually bother me at all. It's linear and I've ran in to a lot of invisible walls out of my desire to check out everything, but there's still a lot to touch and look at.
As seen in the trailer, Cyclone has the ability to jump over long gaps. Heat can walk through fire. Phillip's form changing has a lot of practical utility outside of combat, which is another improvement over the Battride War games.
A minor complaint I have is that there are a few too many prompts that make it hard for me to feel like I'm the detective that Shoutarou and Phillip are when the game keeps telling me what I need to do. But I understand that this game is aimed at a younger audience so I can understand the reason.
Voice acting:
This is common knowledge now, but Shoutarou and Philip have new VAs. This was done deliberately in Shoutarou's case to allow for better interactions between the characters. However, I'm impressed with how similar they sound to the originals. Admittedly, Phillip does sound a little like Desast but I guess that's just how my hearing is attuned right now.
Story:
Most of what I've played so far is basically just the stuff we've already seen in the approximate 16 minute trailer, so I'll just talk about the new stuff.
Zero One is the first Rider to appear in a cutscene where he admits the only reason he's here is due to the involvement of AIs, finds a Taka Medal and gets thrown off a building by Zeus. Based on what I've heard, he probably won't show up again for a while.
Phillip has doubts that AI isn't just the navigational artificial intelligence she claims to be but Shoutarou has faith is her due to his "detective instinct". Not sure where this is going to lead, but I'm with Shoutarou on this. I don't think I have any reason to be suspicious of her yet. She's helpful in gameplay as well, saving my game, upgrading my Riders, etc.
In addition to Professor Aida, there's also a guy called Professor Zeus. Considering the name of the Dopant who beat up Double in the CGI cutscene in the prologue, I have a bad feeling about this guy.
The first boss fight is quite emotional for Shoutarou, but I don't want to spoil it for anybody. If you intend on playing this game or watching Dream Sword's LP above, I recommend you experience it for yourself.
There's a cutscene with the Sonozakis in what appears to be the iconic Kamen Rider Stormdrain, presumably Sector City's Water Purification Sector. This area was in the Battride War games as well so I'm excited to see it here and looking forward to getting to experience this cool place for the first time. Zeus shows up here as well to complain about the Riders and task the Sonozakis with hunting down Double. Ryubee agrees to this since he wants to find Phillip and revive the Gaia Impact.
Conclusion:
A lot of my enjoyment is the surreality of playing an actual Kamen Rider game localized outside Japan with English subs. The game itself is like a combination of various other games as I mentioned above, but if you like what you hear, I would recommend it for sure!
