This episode was so
wakiwaki
you guys! Really made me feel all
howahowa
inside. Like hanging out with some old
munimuni
you haven't seen in forever. Kind of a
dekadeka
amount of Gekiranger fanservice to just throw out there all of a sudden, but it's really hard to complain when I love that show so much.
...As you can probably tell. To put that above paragraph in terms people will actually be able to understand, I'm not sure why an episode of Kiramager suddenly decided to do this tribute, or why it's inexplicably by Gekiranger's main writer Michiko Yokote, who I don't believe has written an episode of Sentai since Goseiger ended, but the end result is a fun detour of an episode that's probably going to be a lot less enjoyable to people who aren't big on the material being referenced.
Putting the homages aside, it's a very standard episode of Kiramager, which isn't a bad thing for sure, but there's not much exceptional about it to praise. Sena is a great character (they all are), so it's fun to see another episode focused squarely on her and her ability to run really fast all the time, but it doesn't do anything
particularly
clever with the premise, nor does she get some good character arc to tie things together. I think my favorite beat in the whole episode was probably Mach coming in at the end feeling dejected about not being involved in the story until that moment.
The thing that gives the episode that extra punch is very much the Gekiranger bits, and while two random side characters coming back may not seem like a big deal, people who have watched Gekiranger ought to know that there
were
no small parts in that series, so having Miki and Natsume back is as good as anyone else. It was cool seeing them again, and if the clip show history lesson inspires the kids currently watching Kiramager to go back and watch Gekiranger, I'd say this entire episode is worth it just on that alone.
I mean, Gekiranger is just the best, you know? It had a very memorable cast with some great development, arcs that played out in really satisfying ways, a few good twists in the plot here and there, crazy strong theming centering around those sweet martial arts influences, which of course meant tons of stylish action with amazing choreography...
Wait, what show was I talking about again?
