"Amazon."
Before Kamen Rider Ex-Aid introduced us to the Dangerous Zombie,
Kamen Rider Amazons
had it's own horrific monster.
Jun Maehara,
once a member of the Nozama Peston Service, lost his life hunting the Amazons. Experimented on after his death by Tachibana , Jun was darkly resurrected to became the very first
Sigma Type
Amazon, eventually to be followed by
Iyu/Crow.
An emotionless killing machine, Sigma foiled our main heroes at every turn until a climactic battle where the
Mole Amazon
managed to strike a decisive blow. And while Sigma may be gone from the world of the Amazons TV show (for now?), he is "alive" and well in toy form. So let's take a look at
S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Amazon Sigma!
Packaging
Amazon Sigma's
box lines up very well with the two standard retail releases of of Alpha & Omega. The same type of slim style black box we first became familiar with during Drive. However since there was only one type of release for Sigma, a Tamashii Web Exclusive, this box only lines up with retail Alpha & Omega. If you're like me and you sprang for the Amazon.JP exclusive releases, then you have two figures in interesting brown boxes that don't line up at all. It's really really minor, but it does bug me. Another minor thing to irk you, specifically if you're
Gigabeetle/elteebagig,
is that the names on the edge of the box are all comically placed entirely differently between the three.
Main Figure
The most notable thing about
Amazon Sigma
is that this figure is actually the first Amazons release to use the
Wild or Origin
type body. In show the Sigma suit was a repaint of the Wild Omega suit with a driver added. So it would be only fitting for Bandai to eventually release this mold in those colors, right?
Taking that into account, this is a really fantastic looking new mold from Amazons.
While I love the colorful and metallic nature of the Alpha & Omega suits, something about this shiny silver paint on Sigma is just magnificent. It reflects light in just the way I would have hoped, without any of that pesky filter from the show either. The sort of bronzed red paint applications also really go a long way to giving it a very good menacing feel. Like rust peering through that shiny metal armor. When you see Sigma from behind it almost looks like blood, he looks particularly savage at times. And wow that purple. That gorgeous bright purple used for his compound eyes is just electric. They pop beautifully.
Now let's look at how this figure functions. On the whole, it works about as well as Alpha & Omega. Each of those molds have shortcomings though, and so does Sigma. In his case I'm happy to report that his articulation is for the most part, great. He has some stellar ankles with plenty of clearance at the cuff, no weird fins on the back of his legs to keep the knee bends from functioning (lookin at you Alpha). He also has the same style of pull down hips as Omega but his feature far better clearance. Now, before I finish with the legs here's the biggest drawback to this figure. The damn knee pads. These things need to seriously be glued in place. If you even look at them wrong, they pop out. Just bending the legs back into a straight position will cause them to fly off. It's absurdly annoying. I lost both numerous times over the course of shooting this gallery.
Moving up, Sigma's
Amazons Driver
is looking great. It's eyes are more thickly painted than I'd like though so the colors don't quite pop the same way as his helmet. The handle on the right side is still removable as on the other 2 Amazons riders, even if he has no weapons to make from it. The upper body itself is just insanely gorgeous. The way the chest is seated on the torso allows for some great arching in his back. You can definitely get some good evil/crazy guy poses that the best villains would be proud off. Kuroto Dan would be proud. Again the bronze paint applications make him look fantastic here too. And the sculpt for the upper body is sharp & clean.
The arms probably on par with Alpha and Omega, though they have their own issues. The shoulder pads aren't really hinged well enough to move as I'd like, bend the arms up too far and you'll probably pop one or both off. The bicep swivels on both arms were frozen on mine so I really had to work them loose. I'd like to mention that I really appreciate the clearance between the upper arm & forearm armor. That clear area around the elbow let's you use the included flame effects way more easily than either Alpha or Omega did.
And finally the head. As I mentioned above, those eyes are electric. I love how they look. The sculpt for this new head is on point as well, getting back to a more bestial look closer to
Showa Amazon's
design. I really can't way to see that head done up in bright green with blood red eyes for a Wild Omega. It's just calling out for it. The bronze accents also continues to give this guy a very menacing look that I appreciate.
Overall this is just a really great uniform looking release. I had some spotty QC issues with Alpha & Omega but Sigma seems to be the best of the trio so far. Something about this particular suit design just clicks for me. I loved Alpha when he was first revealed, but Sigma sort of takes the top spot now. His suit has some subtle design elements that suggest (in my opinion) some Guyver influence. And I am 100% cool with that. This is a brutal show with savage characters. The wilder the better.
Accessories
Things are kind of lite here, but appropriate:
3 - sets of additional hands.
Mostly varieties of splayed open menacing hands. Honestly I don't like the lack of variety. While I know that Sigma doesn't use any weapons derived from the handle from his Amazons Driver, I can't believe he doesn't come with any hands to hold the driver grip at all. Even just one hand would have been enough for me.
1 - Purple Flame Effects set.
Now, unlike the previous two releases, Alpha & Omega, Sigma was only released with his flame effects. And since there was no retail release of this figure, it only came as a Tamashii Web Exclusive. So there's no Amazon.JP brown box packaging to match up with the others. These are the same flames we've seen released with several figures at this point, but they look very very good in purple. Though at this point I'd really like to see them in a deeper shade.
That's that. I guess that's pretty good all things considered. Sigma didn't have any driver weapons. The only other key event in his life was his death at the hands of Mamoru/Mole. And the Mole Amazon figuart will come with an effect part to replicate that death scene. But I do still feel like Sigma could have come with some blood effects. The one big let down with Amazons is that despite the gore (especially in season 2) that none of the figuarts come with blood effects. Just seems like a missed opportunity is all. I know Bandai has never really released like, blood splatter effects before, but it would work well with these guys.
Final Thoughts
S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider Amazon Sigma
has quickly become an expensive figure. Topping out at just
over $100 USD,
Sigma is very much in demand. Due to some unforeseen mistakes my original order for him was lost and I had to pay quite the markup to get the one I have now. Coincidentally the last time that happened was when I bought another evil silver Web exclusive rider, Kamen Rider Gai from Ryuki.
If you liked the Amazons show at all, either season, and like this design then you're going to love this figure. As the third new mold released for Amazons, Sigma has really stolen the top spot as the best one for me. If you don't mind paying over retail price, I'd highly suggest owning him.
