...so today, I learned that there are (at least) two versions of the Ex-Aid SO-DO figures, and one of them is superior.
I'd purchased two versions of Brave Level 2, both the standard and the black box (which I think were the versions released to another country. Thailand, maybe?) I'd assumed they've be indentical.
Then I discovered the black box version has some traits the regular version doesn't: a waist swivel and wrist swivels. The stickers for the lower back and back of the legs are either pre-applied, or they're painted details. Furthermore, to make the wrist joint functional, the gauntlets are divided into two stickers: one for the hand and the the other for the wrist cuff and bracer.
That's box 1. In box two, there are TWO versions of his sword (ice and fire), and the blue and orange are pre-painted. The silver at the center of the sword is stickered instead. These don't rotate, but that's hardly a minus.
Looking more closely at them, the black-box version uses silver paint rather than leaving things molded in gray, which makes a world of difference in terms of the final appearance of the thing.
Other details: the black-box version's bracer/shield has the proper gray spot. The neck isn't tilted the way the regular version's is. This version's back and front colors don't mismatch the way the regular one does. The blue on the black-box version is also more metallic.
The original comes with stickers for the Level 1 form, as well as the back of Level 1's head. That's pretty much the only advantage of the original, as far as I can tell.
The original version isn't bad, but this slightly updated-and-altered version is impressive. Did we even know this was a thing?
