"Uh uh uh, it's not nice to point."
With 2 of their 5 members defeated already,
Psychos Red, Blue & Black
are more determined than ever to defeat the
Power Rangers.
In an effort to defeat the
Psycho Rangers,
the Power Rangers all masquerade as the Blue Ranger to hide their identities, and their fighting styles. While this plan may work, there's an unforeseen complication when a previously unknown
6th Psycho Ranger
makes his debut on the battlefield!
Psycho Silver
is here to take the rangers for himself, or so it seems..... Psycho Blue is in for a rude awakening when he finds out that Psycho Silver, isn't who he claims to be.
As with my Psycho Green gallery, I tried to recreate at least a few iconic images of the character. Both Green and Silver have very very brief fictional appearances anyway. And unfortunately for this gallery, getting hold of a Legacy Psycho Blue or Red is quite difficult right now and Black is impossible currently. So Psycho Green has become a bit of a stand in for those 3. I also wasn't about to buy 5 Blue Space Rangers to totally replicate the episode so you get the whole team! Enjoy!
Packaging
Psycho Silver comes in the exact same style of the
25th anniversary
packaging that Psycho Green did. Retail Legacy figures dropping right now like Psycho Red and Blue come in similar window boxes to these, albeit in a lighter color scheme. But these convention exclusive slip cover boxes do look really great.
The packaging features a very short bio for the character as well as some great artwork on the front of the slipcover. Both the modern Saban era logo as well as the original
Power Rangers In Space
logo are present. The entire presentation just really works for me and is far better than I'd have ever expected from Bandai on one of their last PR con exclusives ever. They at least deserve credit for that. If you purchased Psycho Silver from SDCC you'll notice the
debut sticker
adorning the bottom right of the slipcover. If you ordered yours from Entertainment Earth, this sticker won't be present. It's the only difference between the two.
Main Figure
My review for
Psycho Silver
will be close to word for word with my
Psycho Green
review. The figure mold is identical. Only the silver paint applications and the included accessory are changed. So if you've read up on that gallery, you can likely skip a bit ahead on this one.
When I initially saw the announcement for the
Legacy Psycho Rangers,
I have to say, I got VERY excited.
Power Rangers In Space
is absolutely my favorite season of the franchise ever and the Psychos were great villains. Likewise, I loved
Denji Sentai Megaranger
and the
Nezirangers
are by far the best and most original evil Sentai that franchise has ever come up with. These are some rock solid villain designs that I've waited 20 years to own in some kind of figure form. No matter how I feel about Bandai America, I had to give them a shot for these characters. In the case of Psycho Green, I was quite pleased. With Silver though? Be cautious.
If you've ever handled one of the previously released Legacy figures, then you basically know what you're getting out of
Psycho Silver.
The Psycho Ranger Mold (which will largely be unchanged across the 7 uses of it) is a pretty intricately detailed one, considering what's come before it. Most of the ranger figures we've seen in the line have the same basic bodies, at least structurally, with a moderate degree of paint apps that close the gap on detailing. This one has far more molded in detailing than the standard. The lower legs can seem a bit plain aside from some white and Silver highlights, but the thighs are packed with sculpted lines that extend from the thing across the interior joint into the waist. While articulation is fairly standard across this line, the hips do impact the waist armor from certain angles so you may lose a little variety because of that. Sadly I have to report that even after purchasing two Psycho Silvers, the ankles, knees and hips are extremely weak. Very little friction holds these joints in place so your figure may fall over quite easily. I had some trouble getting him to stay in pose for this gallery. This was not an issue I ran into with my Psycho Green.
The waist and upper body are packed with unique detailing as well as some gorgeous
metallic Silver
paint. Though I must admit, it's sloppily applied in several areas, the most notable of which is the chest. You can clearly see a brush stroke on the chest where the paint app was never properly smoothed out. The waist swivel is pretty free moving but also tight enough to maintain poses well. It's an extremely well defined sculpt as well, that I honestly did expect from this company. This is accentuated by that wonderful metallic paint too, when applied correctly. Each rivet and line in the armor is executed just right, I mean look at those lines across his back. Surprisingly the ab articulation also manages to function without breaking the sculpt horribly, in a way more reminiscent of something like Marvel Legends than previous Legacy figures.
The arms are mostly standard for a Legacy figure. I feel like they're a bit too long compared to the upper body personally. A bit more sparsely detailed than the rest of the figure, I do appreciate the accuracy of paint apps on the fists and shoulders. The only real limitation here is that the shoulder armor that extends out off the body does keep the arms from swinging up and out as much as they're designed too. I also feels the hands on this release are quite loose compared to Green. Lastly, there's the head. While it does look nice, I feel this is maybe the biggest issue the figure has. The details are very soft and ill-defined. It's all there in a general sense, but the sharpness and depth have been lost somewhere. And there are a number of minor paint defects as well. I feel like it misses the mark just enough, as Green did, but isn't totally detrimental.
Accessory
As with mold mate Psycho Green and most other Legacy Figures, Silver comes with 1 accessory. The
Psycho Silverizer
was a weapon used by Zhane in his Psycho Silver guise when he "attacked" the Space Rangers. I'm glad to see each of the Psycho Rangers released thus far have their signature weapons, and I'm just as happy with that here. While this accessory does look pretty nice at first glance, I have to say I find the shortness of the blade to be pretty off-putting. Zhane's normal ranger form Super Silverizer has a longer blade than the Psycho version anyway. And while the blade could be proportional to this figure, it just looks a bit short and stunted. It's designed just fine, much like Psycho Green's dagger. But I'm just a bit iffy on the size. The blade is also warped a bit in package, and the grip is a bit too thick to fit into Silver's hand properly.
Final Thoughts
Two out of seven in, this mold holds up fine. But the quality control for this second/simultaneous release is a fair bit worse I'm afraid. Just be aware of that if you're looking to pick one up. The
Legacy Psycho Silver Ranger
will be another fine addition to a growing Legacy collection, and will compliment the rest of your Psycho Rangers quite well. Later this month,
Psycho Red & Blue
will finally release stateside in case assortments with Dino Thunder White. So we'll finally be able to take a look at those as well. See you soon!
