Best New Show of 2017
Ultraman Geed. The setup was so interesting, getting back Belial and Zero in the main TV-show instead of a movie with Belial's son as the hero? Damn.
And they exceeded my expectations by delivering on every level and sometimes even going beyond it.
I rarely had a Toku-show that resonated so well with me, there were several moments where I thought "They totally should do this!" and exactly that happened seconds later. It was less major plot points and more small touches but them doing it proved to me that they were aware of what they had and how to make it better.
Plus, as I said, they totally exceeded my expectations and did certain things even better than I thought they would.
It's like the third year in a row now that Ultraman takes me number 1 spot of the year even though I'm mainly a Rider-guy, that's how good these shows are. I really hope they keep on going without losing momentum.
Best New-to-You Show of 2017
Kamen Rider Blade. After I suffered through Faiz I finally arrived at another Heisei show with a mostly positive rep and I now understand why. It's a great show with great characters. What I found surprising, however, is that I actually like the first half which is often said to be the weaker part of the show more than the rest. Maybe it's because I could really feel the writing room-change in some aspects, arcs involving Mutsuki sucked the enjoyment of this show right out of me because the character made no sense whatsoever.
But I like how they finally tied his story up even though it didn't really work for me either.
Honorable mention: Kamen Rider Super-1. I started to watch it very recently without thinking much about it but it's a really fun time so far.
Best Rewatch of 2017
Does watching Ultraman Geed episodes more than once because they were so awesome count?
Best Movie of 2017
Heisei Generations. I know it's from December last year technically but we only got subs this year so I guess it counts. The Ex-Aid parts were fantastic, the Ghost parts weren't unbearably terrible, and I liked the Pac-Man theme. Also, the Legend Riders worked (even though Gaim was just a soundboard) and now that the next Heisei Generations movie is a thing and actually has all returning actors for the suits I love this movie even more for making that a thing.
Best Male Lead Character
Even though I like Riku Asakura a lot (and love that his actor appeared as a child way back in an Ultraman Zero-movie) I think its Sento Kiryu from Kamen Rider Build. The role is so surpassingly complex and simple at the same time, it's just great.
Best Female Lead Character
That one, however, is easily in Geed's favor, it's Chihiro Yamamoto as Laiha Toba. Now you'll say "But Kiwami, she's a support character!". Actually, no, she isn't. You may assume that's the case, but she's so important to the show and always equal as a partner to Geed that partakes in action and story herself that she is a lead character.
She is interesting as a person, brings some badass action to the table and her being with Riku throughout major obstacles and standing next to him when a certain character says goodbye to Riku really says it all.
And much of the character's success is, of course, thanks to Chihiro Yamamoto being awesome. She brought the serious nature needed in some instances and also made some amazing action scenes work because of her talent in martial arts.
Best Male Supporting Character
You've entered the "More Geed" territory, I hope you like reading more about Ultraman Geed because well, there's more. Although, let's start with the honorable mention: It's Ryuga Banjou from Kamen Rider Build. This is a secondary Rider done right: Make him relevant to the show ever since the first episode, write him as a great counterpoint to the hero and have him be played by a talented actor. Eiji Akaso already showed us his stuff in the second season of Kamen Rider Amazons so seeing him return for a full year Rider-show was a treat already. And boy, he does a fantastic job. Great stuff from this guy, and easily the best secondary Rider in a long time.
But... the trophy has to Leito Igaguri from Ultraman Geed. Having Zero as a "secondary Ultraman" for the season was perfect, simply because of his relation to Ultraman Belial and because he knows daddy issues himself quite well. His host, however, made the thing perfect. A simple, rather unlucky businessman who works his butt off for his family and is not very heroic or brave, but clearly has what it takes to be a hero.
Him, his family and Zero could already fill a show themselves, but they are only a part of the greater plot which makes it even better.
They play a lot on common superhero-tropes but build it up with some really emotional stuff. The endgame for the character and his family was awesome.
Best Female Supporting Character
More Geed! It's Moa Aizaki, the ditzy, badass agent lady. On paper, I shouldn't like this character but she was brought to life by Mayu Hasegawa, a great actress, and written beyond just her shortcomings which made everything the character was involved in highly enjoyable. Even her obvious hots for Riku which resulted in more than one cringe-setup was turned into something funny simply because the actress could deliver it without fail and because the other characters bounced off of her so well.
It's another great part of Geed, the character I should've hated but fell in love with regardless. Go Moa!
Best Villain
Not someone from Geed! I mean Belial is awesome (obviously), don't get me wrong, and Kei Fukuide certainly wasn't a bad villain either, but the bad guys of Geed where it's the weakest part, simply because most of the tension came from the main characters who had their history with them and because Jugglus Juggler from Ultraman Orb was such a hard performance to follow up on. I'm really curious to see how they plan to outdo this guy.
Anyways, the crown goes to someone who for now appears to be a bad guy at least, its Blood Stalk from Kamen Rider Build. I feel like going into detail as to why he's the best would get too spoiler-y for this post so I just assume you've seen Build and know what I'm talking about. If not, go watch it now!
Best Returning Past Character
Back into the land of Geed again! It has to be Ultraman Zero and maybe Ultraman Belial too; I think they can share this trophy. Ultraman Zero for reasons I already explained, and Belial because of well... Geed would be quite pointless without him
You could certainly choose some Riders from Heisei Generations Final for this category and I probably would if I had seen it already (Gaim!) but I will have to wait some more to see that movie so I guess they'll be featured in next years' best of's.
Best Actor
That has to be Tetsuya Iwanaga as Kuroto Dan / Kamen Rider Genm. I mean how could it be anyone else? The man has achieved godhood with this role. He was so into it and gave it his all to make this batshit crazy character a reality. Thumbs up for this guy, he didn't really carry the show as Ex-Aid was quite excellent in of itself but it certainly wouldn't have been the same without the divine Kuroto Dan.
Best Actress
Wow, another Ex-Aid entry! I'd love to nominate something from Geed but Ex-Aid was certainly a thing for most of this year and Ruka Matsuda as Poppy Pipopapo deserves the crown. Another character I should hate but didn't thanks to good writing and a fantastic actress. Her range of emotion was so wide, from the very loud and happy Poppy to the serious and calm Asuna and quite a few sad moments for both personas. She also had a very menacing voice, she only did it a few times but man was that awesome.
So yeah, after Kuroto Dan this is certainly the character that stood out the most thanks to a great talent in front of the camera.
Toku Crush of 2017
I think I usually skip this category but this year I can't, Moa is too goddamn adorable. And Laiha is pretty awesome too. Riku is one lucky guy I'll tell you that much!
Best Suit Actor
It has to be the legend, the man, Seiji Takaiwa. I think you legitimately cannot give someone else the title as long as this man is in the business. And I hope that continues to be the case for a lot of shows to come!
Best Writer
Everyone involved with Geed. Although Rider really has stepped up its game after Ghost, Ex-Aid was great and Build is pretty awesome too. But for this year? It's Geed. I don't think I need to explain why at this point
Best Director
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeed.
Best Hero Suit Design
I like Ex-Aid but I still prefer the more traditional looking suits so I'd go with Build, but... Ultraman Geed Primitive. It's just so good. A more heroic looking Belial, how can you go wrong with that? Sadly none of the other suits aside from Solid Burning wow-ed me. But they were still good.
Honorable mention to Build Rabbit/Tank and Cross-Z.
Best Monster Suit Design
The Belial-fusion monsters from Geed. They were all badass. Skull Gomora is my favorite.
Best Weapon
The Beat Closer. I like the jingles of this thing a lot.
Best Vehicle/Mecha
I guess Build's bike? Not a whole lot of good mecha or vehicles this year.
Best Fight Scene
Oh boy, there's lots of good stuff to choose form but I think Geed's first fight against Skull Gomora is the one I rewatched the most. Fantastic atmosphere, gorgeous shots and miniature work with great action and effects. Just all-around perfection.
Best Dramatic Scene
Spoilers:
The last fight between Geed and Belial when Riku, in his mind, hugs Belial after he saw what happened in his past and just tells him to let go. It's such a powerful moment.
Aside from that, there were lots of great moments in the end-parts of Ex-Aid as well. Stuff like a certain character sacrifice and the relation between Emu and Parad comes to mind.
Best Comedic Scene
The scene from Geed where Moa learns that Rikku and Laiha live together and goes crazy. That's all
Biggest "WTF did I just watch?" Moment
Something from Kyuranger for sure, but thankfully I forgot already.
Best Song
Geed's OP is badass, just an all-around fantastic retro Toku song, but I think Build's "Be The One" takes it. I recall that I initially hated it but after seeing the opening and reading the translation I learned to love it, there's a powerful message in that song and it's quite catchy too.
Best Piece of Merchandise
The S.H.Figuarts Shinkocchou Seihou Kamen Rider 1. It looked great on the promotional pictures but in-hand it blew me away, such a gorgeous figure.
Biggest Surprise of 2017
Kamen Rider Build being as good as it is. Not that I expected it to be terrible but the show did go way beyond what I expected it to be. In an all positive way too.
Biggest Disappointment of 2017
Uchu Sentai Kyuranger, all of it. I'm not the biggest Sentai-fan but Zyuohger was such a good time, simple and fun, and then Kyuranger comes around and it's just god-awful all around. That show can just vanish from existence for all I care.
