I knew as soon as Crunchula picked up Juuru's sketchbook I was going to absolutely adore this one.
I guess I should just know to trust this writer. As anyone who saw
my post on her last episode for this show
will be familiar with, I'm a big fan of Michiko Yokote's work on Gekiranger, so it's not too surprising that this cat-centric script delivers on the Honest Heart with some seriously Fantastic Technique, which, uh... results in an, er...
Unbreakable Body
of work for her... two whole episodes on Kiramager...
Look, I know that last one was forced, but even if I lack the Amazing Ability to do it smoothly, you'd better believe I still have the Iron Will to work in as many Gekiranger references as possible.
I'm getting all
netsunetsu
just thinking about it!
Okay, right, I know, I need to actually talk about Kiramager, too.
I'm a huge sucker for Sentai plots that humanize the villains in any way. Especially ones where you're made to sympathize with and feel pity for their plight. Token "good" monsters, and those sorts of plots. I eat 'em up, and this episode of Kiramager did a wonderful job of not only making Crunchula into a guy you want to root for, it also fit that idea
flawlessly
into the larger thematic core of the series. The longer it kept going, the more impressed I got.
Just this whole idea of doing an episode where one of the main bad guys feels his creativity is being stifled by the grind of his job, and ends up bonding with one of the heroes to rediscover the simple joy of artistic expression, I mean... like,
dang
, you guys. This is just supposed to be the silly cat episode, right!? And all that stuff is wonderful fun on top of this! There are loads of quality gags in here, with Tametomo and Shiguru playing pet sitter in the middle of a fight and the messed up version of the roll call being my personal favorites. (Admittedly, it's mostly just nice to see the roll call again. I really like that stock footage, kittens or no kittens.)
And yet the episode isn't content with that, and also tells this very characterful narrative with Crunchula that had me feeling so many feelings for the poor guy. It really impressed me how natural a turn this felt, too. Crunchula hasn't had the best presence throughout the show, but I remember at the start really liking the basic concept of this bad guy making monsters based on his slightly tenuous grasp on human culture, and everything this episode pulled out of that is exactly the kind of stuff I'd dream of seeing done with that. It makes total sense to me he'd have this pride as a creator that comes before the mission. It's a cute way to justify that aspect of the Sentai formula (monsters based on random stuff), and a great way to build on so much of what Kiramager has been doing throughout its run.
I've kinda hit the point where I'm just going in circles about how much I loved this one, but, well, I really loved this one! It was a nice standalone plot that still felt like an escalation due to moving a major character in such a new direction, making it a solid lead-in to a final arc, and just a super touching story on its own merits. The last scene before the ED legitimately made me choke up. I've said it before and I'll say it again – I have so much
fun
watching Kiramager, you know?
