Hi, I'm new in the forum so I just want to give my impressions overall. English isn't my first language so I hope to not mess it up a lot.
I have been reading all your messages, and while I agree with them, I think the biggest problem with this episode is the way the scenes were cut.
For example, the scene where Touma is trying to save his friend/sister just with his pinky, it feels dumb and a forced way to indicate friendship. However, like 10 seconds before, you can see how they were holding their hands, but your attention as a viewer is focused around the big portal sucking everything, there's no way you can notice it in your first time watching it. I would rather put them holding hands, but then their lose their grip and have to use the pinky as a last resort. Then Touma says something like "I promise I'll protect you" or something like that and then the girl is sucked into the book, just by that I think all the emphasis on promises would have had better impact.
Another scene that lost that "wow" effect on me when was Touma was trying to reach Rekka, because when the sword appears, by perspective, it feels like it is two or three meters away from Touma. We see that he's trying to protect from the flames but I never felt that he was moving, maybe just add a shot of his feet trying to walk would have convinced me. I get what they were trying to accomplish, it just didn't land on me.
Another thing I would like to talk is why I the disconnection between Touma as civilian and as a rider feel so strong. Because, riders being experts at combat is nothing new, it's a trope at this point. However, for me it's the scene where the monster changes the scenario where this feels the most. Let's assume that as books, these things contain the knowledge to fight, however knowledge is not the same as execution. When Touma adapts so quickly at these changes it feels like really choreographed. Something I think Ghost and Zero-One handled much better, because, if memory serves right, When Takeru first transformed he had troubles with floating around, while Aruto couldn't calculate how much power his legs had at the moment. These minor details keep the illusion that we're seeing a rookie in the beginning of their journey. Also, even those green screen and CGI scenario felt really disconnected, aside from illumination, they felt random. I don't know that's just my opinion.
On the subject of being too Sentai, I never felt the Sentai feeling until I saw the big monster, because I have seen that kind of shot multiple times in Power Rangers and Sentai. So at the moment I didn't know what to make for it, because I had no sense of scale. And, to be honest, I didn't got it. At the start of the battle it looks like a 20-meter tall monster, then after the finisher it looks like 5-meter tall and goes back to 20 right after that scene.
Moving on to more positive things. The suit is amazing, it has two color combinations that I love, red & black and red & white. The CGI, while not the best, it accomplishes what it needs to do. I have to give props to the imagery of the pages making the finisher and also when Blades enters the scene, because it feels that they're narrating the story/legend/tale of this new Kamen Rider. Mei is kind of annoying, however it's too early to judge, I think if this response it's loud enough they will tone her down. I mean, Aruto used to yell a lot before, so I'll just wait. Overall, it's a weak first episode, but also had to give us a lot of information in a really short amount of time.
I have extended a lot in this post, so I'll just leave it there. I hope future posts don't being so long but I just had a lot of thoughts in my mind and I had to get them out.
