When
Power Rangers Dino Charge
first began to leak, we discovered through casting calls and credits that there was a new villain called
Sledge
. Not only was he a new villain, he was the new MAIN villain, replacing the
Kyoryuger
counter-part known as
Chaos
(who is rumored to appear in
Dino Supercharge
but we won't know for awhile yet if that's true or not). And when
Bandai America
announced villain toys and then revealed him at
Toy Fair 2015
, fans were all abuzz with excitement!
So how does the toy of the new
Power Rangers
-created villain stand up? Let's find out!
The Figure
This is another figure that features great articulation. You have the standard 13 points of articulation (head, 2 on each arm, forearms, 2 on each leg, knees), and my all time favorite part about this figure - his shoulders are designed NOT to hinder his arm articulation! The shoulder pads, as shown in one of the pictures, actually can pull back (they are attached further down his arm) which allows you to get some great poses with his arms that do not have the shoulder pads blocking your path.
As always, the paint applications are weak, almost to the point that it ruins the figure. The armor is a bright rust orange instead of being a muted rust orange like in the show, and his skin is way too neon green (it should be a bit softer to match the show). So Sledge is very bright as a toy, none of his computer contraptions on his body are painted, and the backside of the figure (as standard in
Bandai America
releases) is not painted at all, almost ruining the majesticness of the sculpting of the figure.
Sculpting wise he's pretty spot-on, and the added "cracks" and "dents" in his armor are a nice touch. He has scales on his arms (just like the show), and he even has detail on his "dreadlock tentacle" hair. Speaking of - that tentacle does stop some articulation on the head as you can't easily wrap the tentacle around his shoulders because they're so bulky.
His legs also get hindered a bit because his waist is so huge. Overall, he feels heavy and bulky, with enough articulation that isn't hindered to make him feel like a pretty strong figure.
The Accessories
He comes with his blaster that fits in to a molded hole in his right wrist. Mine fits snugly but I've seen reports of others where the peg isn't large enough and thus it falls out constantly. The blaster itself is molded in the soft plastic and I assume the mold wasn't strong - I have a noticeable crack in the weapon from the plastic molding (see picture).
The Good
Great articulation
Menacing poses because of the shoulder pads not conflicting with articulation
The Bad
Paint applications are very weak
Armor is too brightly colored, could have used a more muted color
The plastic that makes up the blaster is thin and thus easily cracked/disfigured
Overall Conclusion
This isn't a home-run figure by any means, but it's also not a bad figure. For a "main villain" figure
Sledge
does a pretty good job of delivering what you'd hope for. The issues I have with the figure can easily be fixed by painting him yourself or simply never using his blaster accessory. He is currently available both in the last wave of
Power Rangers Dino Charge
as well as a case assortment in either Target or Toys'R'Us that have the
Power Rangers Dino Supercharge
figures in stock.
Sledge
is a must-buy for a
Power Rangers
fanatic, but a figure that an average collector doesn't necessarily need to dish out anything more than what retail is for him.
