Pretty sure this has been discussed before but whatever. An animated Power Rangers is a relatively popular idea in the fandom, as many wants the franchise to be in animated format. With Hasbro being in charge, chances are higher than ever, even if it's virtually nonexistent.
But I really wanna know, how many of us here want it, or vice versa? Also, I'll list some pros and cons for a hypothetical animated Power Rangers series.
PROs:
-
Complete control.
Power Rangers is co owned by Toei, and having a completely original Power Rangers animated series would give Hasbro a complete control for that particular series, especially when it comes to quality and scope. This is, assuming if their first animated series is a completely original team like Hyperforce did it.
-
Chance to remake older series.
This might be even more of a dimmer chance, but they can always use any of the previous teams as a reboot in animated form. Hell, maybe we'd get a proper Gokaiger adaptation with it! Hahah I'm going too far with that one. But we all know if they want to readapt the older teams in animated form, it's going to be MMPR regardless.
-
Larger scope and ideas.
The biggest advantage going animated is that they can utilize epic visuals that are unable to be achieved in the live action TV shows. More importantly, Power Rangers are always under scrutiny for 'looking cheap'. An animated visual can eliminate that thought. When it comes to ideas, Power Rangers are often limited due to its budget. Just imagine a Countdown to Destruction in animated form, it can be even larger in scope thanks to animation.
-
Use well known voice actors
. To be fair, the live action can do this as well, but since they won't be moving out of New Zealand for filming any time now, the animated series will most likely utilize voice actors from US and Canada. Maybe even Johnny Young Bosch will return to the franchise!
-
Chance to attract even larger audience.
This is sad to say, but in the west, being live action is pretty much why people wouldn't get into Power Rangers for some reason. Parents hate it because it's 'too violent', and others might say it looked cheap. We all know adults watch cartoons as well, but I feel like having an animated Power Rangers would help attract more people. Of course, they key to attract people is always if it's a good show, but in animated, the chances are higher.
CONs:
-
It defeats the idea of Tokusatsu.
Tokusatsu is always going to be live action with special effects. Even SSSS Gridman which is a love letter to Tokusatsu, is primarily an anime. However this con only applies if Hasbro decided that animated will replace Power Rangers. In this situation I think Hasbro (and us) would one an animated and Toku version to air side by side.
-
Budget.
Animation is actually more expensive than the stuff that Power Rangers did, or hell even the DC CW shows. Not to mention lengthy production as well, assuming we want the show to be traditionally animated like Avatar, Voltron and Young Justice. And Power Rangers' modus operandi has always been low-cost, high-profit kind of thing. Add to the rumor that Beast Morphers, which Hasbro put out a lot of money for (at least compared to Neo Saban), wasn't really performing well, maybe Hasbro wants to be careful in spending its money on budget, in case the animated series didn't deliver.
-
It could be CGI
. Now don't get me wrong, a lot of CGI shows are fantastic. Clone Wars, Transformers Prime, TMNT 2012 and Rebels, they're all CGI. But hey when we talk about animated, we talk about 2D animation. Plus, people bitched about CGI anime often, so I see the same thing can be said here. Despite this however, I can see that Power Rangers has a huge advantage if it's a CGI animation.
-
It could've been a lot worse.
Ummmmm Thundercats Roar. That's all. You know how it is. You know how people LOVE that kind of artstyle because it's cheap and easy. Yes, CN does not own Power Rangers. But that artstyle being easy to use is worrisome.
That's all I can think of now. Feel free to add your pros and cons if you have some.
Also, a question. If you get to pick one Power Rangers team and even unadapted Sentai into an animated form, that is NOT MMPR, which one would you choose?
