Oh, yes! I remember that moment, and I remember being quite touched by it—although for different reasons, as I had, by this point, begun to sympathise with house-burning, siblicide enthusiast Asakura, and I thought that was a suggestion of him being a more complex character than had hitherto been truly acknowledged outside of the weird cruise ship arc.

I always feel a bit iffy about things like this, i.e. whatever I write, I'm constantly composing these little love letters to the influence Sylvia Plath had on me when I was younger, and I can tell you at length how I have tried to build on and address themes in her work, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there is an implicit connexion beyond that which I have assigned it, so regardless of what Shirakura says in regards of the legacy of Ishinomori's themes being preserved in
Ryuki
, I'd take that with a pinch of salt—plus Shirakura's position is that of someone wishing to ensure a saleable product, not someone who wants to tell a story, so I feel that, if being told this by the man himself, I would simply nod and smile politely, and ignore him.

I don't want to get all spoilery, but I feel that fundamentally, considering the end of the series, it makes very little difference if they are alive or dead. It does make me wonder what exactly
Rider Time
is supposed to be a sequel to, but I only dimly recall that mini-series, and I'm assuming that the post-
DCD
Heisei continuity advances from a timeline we haven't seen in the other spin-offs—or that the series
did
happen, but then everyone got their memories/powers back due to some unspecified event. I am sure I could answer these questions by re-watching
Zi-o
, lol.

That's lovely of you to say, thank you, I'm especially flattered as, in the short time I've been back on this site, I've really enjoyed reading your meta.

In light of what kurona has mentioned, this is definitely interesting in terms of the discussion of what it means to be a hero within the series. I think this arc with Kawaga and Tojo was probably the point at which I was the most engaged with the show, though I think it could have been explored a little more deftly. I didn't wish to keep harkening back to
555
because I don't even like Inoue, but I think that the interplay between the "heroes" and "villains" in that show is possible because of the way
Ryuki
explores Kawaga and Tojo. I love how you discuss Kobayashi's depiction of character also; I would absolutely read any essay you ever write on this matter, hahah.

I like this. I wanted to like Ren a lot more than I did, tbh, and, in truth, I find I can only really like him in regards to his relationship with Yui, but the way you phrase things here really hits home, especially considering the upheaval we've all experienced over the past few years.
Stop me now. I'm on the verge of going into an
Evangelion
flavoured reminiscence on the notion of the division between "self" and "other."
