His power has no fear, a golden force is here, you know when thunder roars it's
Gold Ranger
!
My personal all-time favorite
Power Ranger
requires a special gallery with an over-abundance of pictures in various poses ranging from his first appearance in
Power Rangers Zeo
to the team up with the
Gold Ranger
from
Power Rangers Dino Charge
. This gallery was a TON of fun to do and I found it hard to stop taking pictures - something that doesn't happen very often (as many photographers will know sometimes the frustration of not getting that perfect shot). It just seemed that every shot came out great. As a personal note, I truly believe this to be one of my best galleries since I started doing pictures a couple of years ago.
ANYWAYS.
The figure was part of the latter waves of the 5" figures offered in the
Power Rangers Super Megaforce
toyline. The line consisted exclusively of previous
Red Rangers
and Sixth Rangers, with the more-desired wave consisting of figures like the
Titanium Ranger
-
click here to check out the gallery we did of the Titanium Ranger from this same line
- and for awhile was fetching three times as much as normal retail on the secondary market.
Let's take a look at our usual aspects of the figure!
The Figure
It's beautiful. The helmet can suffer from sloppy paint applications as the lines for the visor are relatively small - a small blemish, especially when it's a bright color (like gold) on a dark color (black is pretty dark) leaves for a potential nightmare in quality assurance or when you FINALLY find the figure but NOPE ... smudge. Luckily the two figures I have are more or less okay in that regards - check the picture for accuracy.
The body features some nice detailed sculpting on the chest piece as well as the boots and cuffs. You don't realize how detailed it is until you stop and take a closer look at the figure. I haven't had a chance to compare it to the actual suit (and even then comparing which suit whether it's American or Japanese) but from memory it's pretty dang accurate.
The only downside, and it's not a big one, is the lack of paint applications to really make certain pieces stand out. The chest piece and the boots and cuffs would stand out if the sculpting was outlined in black in some way shape or form similar to the actual piece from the show. Looking at the figure I don't even know if it's big enough to be customized but I'm sure someone somewhere has the razor sharp tip with some black paint to do it.
Another downside, and it's the limitations of being a
Bandai America
figure with a budget in mind, is that the arm and leg guards are nothing more than a gold stripe painted on the figure. Luckily, the absence of these being molded plastic as opposed to being simple paint doesn't distract from the overall beauty that is this figure.
The articulation is pretty spot on - the head turns, the arms have full motion (except when the chest shield gets in the way), there's elbow joints, forearm turns, full motion legs, knee joints, and calves turn. This allows the figure to get in some pretty awesome poses and luckily since the shield was as cumbersome in the show as it is on the toy, you don't really run in to too many instances where you lack the ability to post the figure like the character in the show. For the most part, you can even get the "Summon Golden Power Staff" pose with some sneaky angling of your camera and the figure (see pictures).
The Accessories
The only accessory that the
Gold Ranger
comes with is the
Golden Power Staff
. The plastic is the accursed soft plastic, meaning that with temperature the plastic will begin to bend. You can usually bend it back in to shape for a few moments, but it loves to get back in to the "Bent Golden Power Staff" pose within a couple of minutes. It is cast in the same color that the gold on the
Gold Ranger
is, making it fit very nicely.
The sculpting on the
Golden Power Staff
is great - nearly all the details you'd expect are present. As always, some harder plastic and some paint applications would really make this thing stand out - luckily, because there's not too many nooks and crannies in it, you can customize it to your heart's content. In fact, if the paint is thick enough you might be able to even fix the plastic bend if you can somehow get it to remain in the "bend" that you want it too.
The only other accessory I can even think that this figure COULD have had come with is an
Auric the Conqueror
tiki. But even that would be a bit of a stretch (but hey, according to
Megazord Madness
it is one of the
Gold Ranger
's zords!).
The Good
Incredible sculpting and detail
It's the
Zeo Gold Ranger
Articulation is barely hindered at all
...it's the
Zeo Gold Ranger
!!!!
The Bad
Bendy plastic on the
Golden Power Staff
Short-packed and may not be in your collection
The figure isn't released yearly
The figure has yet to receive the
Legacy
treatment
Figure doesn't come with a sound box to play the
Gold Ranger
theme song
You can't use the
Golden Power Staff
to take on the powers of the
Gold Ranger
I only bought 2 of them and I need more
The Overall Conclusion
If you're a fan of the
Zeo Gold Ranger
or even just Sixth Rangers in general, you need to add this figure to your collection. It's a stand out piece for only being three colors (gold, black, white). Having collected a number of the figures in the
Super Megaforce
5" toyline, this one is easily the tops of my list and not just because the
Gold Ranger
is the greatest
Power Ranger
now and forever, but because it's a solid figure that will allow you to drown in the joys of nostalgia. Go buy one today.
