Figure-Rise Standard Hibiki has arrived and I could not wait to build it. The Hibiki suit is perhaps one of my favorite designs of all time. I constantly waver between my love of clean sci-fi suits like Kabuto and Faiz, and the really elaborate, almost scary looking suits like Hibiki and dare I say Decade.
This was a long and arduous build due to the level of paint needed. Here are the colors I used:
I almost attempted a metallic purple airbrush job for the forearms but it turns out Metallic Blue is actually a better match. I applied it going for a fade effect with a thick nylon brush.
For reference I looked up images of the Shinkoccou Seihou Figuarts Hibiki and the Hibki promo poster from Heisei Generations Forever.
So to start, I applied some Shine Silver to the face just in case the face stickers didn't cover up the whole area.
Luckily the included stickers actually turned out better than I expected. There's definitely a visible seam down the center where the sticker is expected to fold, but not much can be done about it unless you wanted to attempt your own paint job. Hibiki's mask doesn't really "glow" like other riders, so I was okay with the way this looked. (The kit actually comes with an extra face sticker in case you mess up).
The silver horns were hand painted with Shine Silver, the head emblem was done in gold, and I painted just the bottom jaw of the red mask part with "Char Red".
Now comes the most time consuming part. The chest armor was painted in Shine Silver directly with the marker. Then after letting it dry, I touched up any parts I missed with a tiny brush. The strap underneath the armor was painted in a metallic black. These areas are very small and not very forgiving if you accidently touch one of the "teeth" on the way down.
Perhaps the most difficult part then was the Hibiki logo on his belt and both pairs of drum sticks. The kit comes with tiny wrap-around stickers which I knew were gonna be a nightmare to apply, but in hindsight I almost wish I went with the stickers. Painting the emblems first began with painting in between the crest in metallic black with the tiniest brush I had. Then cleaning that brush (because I only have one that small) and painting the gold parts. We finish with regular Silver paint to the surrounding area.
The black paint was impossible to completely fill in the space, so I ended up going in with a panel liner marker. There's still tiny red spaces that went unpainted. This is some of the smallest paint applications I've ever had to do.
For the wrist and ankle armor, I simply used a brown panel liner. I don't have a good brown paint, and even if I did, I think those areas are too detailed for a clean application. After the marker, the silver parts were painted in Shine Silver.
This leaves us with these stickers unused.
The forearm stickers come off as the big failing of the kit. Gradients are never easy to do and these stickers don't really sell it. I thought about applying an airbrush gradient, but then I'd have to paint over it with the Silver.
So what I did was poured some metallic dark blue paint into a tray, dipped the brush in the paint and applied at the base of the forearm where the color should be the darkest. Go all the way around and as the paint is drying staring to dab the brush downwards to get a fade. You want the paint to be in the "sticky" phase so it doesn't look runny and blends well into the red. It's a very short area and I would say only runs just barely past the silver spikes.
The finished kit looks amazing. I used a brown panel liner marker to detail out the hands. The purple pre-painted plastic used in this kit is very stiff and somewhat brittle. I recommend using a fresh hobby blade to trim down the nubs. The molding on this kit is pretty incredible including some
very
sharp parts (the horns and hand knuckles in particular).
In the end I would still consider Den-O to be the best overall kit to date. If you paint your kits, Hibiki has so many organic details and shar points, that I would definitely put him in the expert range.
A couple of minor cons:
- Some of his wrist pegs are too long and makes his hands look like they are floating.
- Doesn't come with drumsticks alone- only in hand and in holder. The sheathed drumsticks are completely cast in red plastic.
- Joints are plain purple plastic
- Wrist bracelets come off easily and are composed of 2 parts each, so be careful
- Almost every sticker goes into a curved surface
- His chest, thighs, and head seem a little on the big side.
Pros:
- Very stiff, holds poses well
- Effect parts are excellent, definitely usable for the Figuarts
- The purple parts look professionally painted!
- No problems with assembly other than some sharp parts
The Figure-Rise Standard line continues to impress. I look forward to each release and can't wait for Decade in December!
