GekiTohja
GekiTohja was a mecha I haven't really ever put much thought into but looking at it for this retrospective, I'm surprise by how much I really like the look of it. The biggest issues are that GekiJaguar and GekiCheetah are just legs which seems rather lazy but as a result, GekiTohJa does looks more consistently solid since a majority of it is made of GekiTiger. The black markings all over the mecha also help seal the components together. The proportions makes the mecha look very sleek and slender which helps give it that martial arts warrior look. The sansetsukon it has is a really unique weapon and a creative way to use the tails of the GekiBeasts.
GekiElephantTohja
Instead of going for the "replace an arm" route that past Sentai series have done for their additional mecha, Gekiranger decides to actually make them substantial pieces of armor, making them more interesting. First is the combination with GekiElephant. This feels like a bit of retread of GaoElephant, what with an elephant being the first additional mecha of an animal themed sentai. I think this probably my favourite out of the first three combinations, with the large shoulder pads, the elephant horns being part of the helmet, and having a wrecking ball as weapon which I think is a first for a sentai mecha.
GekiBatTohja
First time we have a bat theme mecha and the combination is serviceable enough if a little boring. Most of GekiBat just a wing pack though the wings can be wielded as weapons which is nice. The helmet is okay enough with the little wings on the side though I kinda wish it had more influences from GekiBat's actual head, specifically the visor eyes ala Kamen Rider Knight which had to have been an intentional reference. Still the combination is fine enough.
GekiSharkTohja
My least favourite out of the first three combinations, mostly because of the ginormous head. It's as if they had no idea where else to put it. The arm blades feel like an afterthought compared to how big the head is. The head having a mouthplate is nice but it does make look a little off aesthetically from the other combinations. If the mouthplate could fold away, it would of fit better with the others. As it stands, this combination really does not look good.
GekiTohja Wolf
So this is for all tense and purposes GekiViolets mecha. I guess you could say it's unique because it's just a slightly altered version of the main mecha but it also just tells me that they didn't have the budget to give GekiViolet his own mecha so they gave GekiTohja a new leg piece and called it a day. The defining piece of this combination is the leg blade which looks pretty nice and makes for some cool attacks in the show but at the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact that this combination is still just 90% GekiTohja. I mean just add a new face or something, that would help.
GekiFire
The secondary mecha for the main team, GekiFire is much bulkier compared to GekiTohja what with the blockish legs and the gorilla arms which does make it look much stronger. I think it looks cool and the fiery details on both the arms and chest definitely evokes its name. Plus it has a headphone wearing penguin riding a hoverboard. Only in sentai people. The only problems I have is that the transformation seems almost exactly the same as GekiTohja and I wish the white on the legs was more spread out around the body to make it more solid and more tie it to being the mecha of the Super modes.
GekiFire combinations
GekiFire can also combine with GekiElephant, Bat and Shark just like GekiTouja. Since the combinations are exactly the same, I'm not going to make separate sections for them. My opinions are pretty much the same as GekiTouja's. GekiElephants combinations is the best, GekiBat is okay though I think it does work better with GekiFire's bulkier aesthetic, and GekiShark is the worst. The fact that the GekiShark keeps the helmet whereas the othet two don't just makes it even more aesthetically off.
SaiDaiOh
GekiChopper's personal mecha SaiDain. It's a big rhino with a giant horn. I like it. The horn becoming the sword for the SaiDaiOh form is really cool and I really like that SaiDaiOh has a ton of blue that was hidden away in the SaiDain form, always appreciate transformation tricks like that. The sort of dual head gimmick it has is pretty neat and I like the way the head is shaped in general; It gives off a very ancient chinese look. All around, I think SaiDaioh is pretty swell.
SaiDaiGekiTohja/SaiDaiGekiFire/SaiDaiGekiRinTohja
The Jungle Fury version of this combination has the words "Stampede" and "Charge" which are probably the most apt description of this form. This is less a combination and more a horde of animals. It's certainly unique and also borders on the edge of being either creative or lazy. What is lazy however is the name. Instead of coming up with a unique name for this formation, they decided to just stick the names of the other mechas together, something which they continue to do unfortunately.
GekiRinTohja
Gekiranger's movie exclusive mecha, Rio and Mele get to join the gang now with their RinBeasts. It's quite cool. GekiTohja is really beefed up thanks to the chest and shoulder armor made from RinLion, not to mention the huge sword it has. The RinChameleon is the one big downside of this combination. It's just sort of dangling off on the side of the arm.
