Yeah, Shinji's great. He's balanced nicely between a more proactive Rider, someone who throws himself into conflicts he maybe doesn't all the way understand, and a Rider who wants to help and needs to be told how best to do so. I just, I really like how much it seems like Ryuki hasn't finished baking yet, you know? How they're using these early episodes to add layers and dimensions, treating his character like they treat the suits: basic, then finished, then upgraded.
Yui is
100%
the brains of this outfit. Nothing about Ren tells me he'd be safe running things solo.
Also, minor thing. While spoiler text works on the boards, it, uh, it doesn't carry over to notification emails I get. Like, at all. So, uh, maybe we cool it on spoiler text? Thanks!

Ren just straight up dragging Shinji through the streets of Japan from the back of his motorcycle while Yui complains.

It's a good show and in many ways it was the first show that really created a lot of the elements that later Heisei Rider series would adopt.
Like, you can sort-of tell how formative it is, in the Heisei template, from how much I'm thinking of Ex-Aid and Wizard while I'm watching it. It definitely feels more Heisei than Kuuga and Agito did. Again, even the idea of there being an active Rider before we meet the primary Rider? That's something that feels more typical as the franchise continues. Plus! THE BELTS SHOUT OUT ATTACK NAMES! I LOVE THAT SO MUCH AND I FORGOT TO MENTION IT!

Shinji is in making the choice to become a Rider. He's made more than aware of the danger he's getting into, but he ultimately refuses to walk away from the chance to save people from the Mirror Monsters. It's such a great way to build the audience's respect for his character, who initially seems like nothing but a goofball.
Shinji ripping up the Seal card is
maximum hero points
. Yui sells it great, too, with this mixture of horror and respect.

why
he can't walk away: Reiko's dialogue about how many people are affected when just one person disappears. That line hangs over the series in ways you won't be able to realize yet, and is something that sticks out a lot more on a rewatch. Something to keep in mind going forward. Or backward, really. Simply framing the stakes of losing a life on such a personal level is just plain neat in its own right, and may or may not make an interesting contrast with the way Kuuga and Agito handled monster casualties?
Yeah, it's to the benefit of the first story that multiple people define the stakes of the missing persons cases: Reiko chides Shinji for forgetting the people left behind, how the survivors maybe suffer more than the victims; Yui's there to be that survivor, driven to risk her life because she can't live without answers; and, like, the easiest button to press to get the viewers to treat a missing person more seriously than a dozen monster-murder victims, a crying child who wants her mom back. It's like the show is drilling closer to an emotional core as the story progresses, moving to a more emotional example with each scene.

that
, in turn, is that it visually informs you about the characters' personalities. Riders in Ryuki by and large
only
have visors, so Ryuki's huge eyes, which are straight up
bulging
, fit the image of a naive, wide-eyed idealist. He looks a bit friendlier and more heroic. Meanwhile, Knight actually has eyes on his helmet design too, but they're small, and hide so deep within the visor, I straight up didn't notice them for like a dozen episodes back when I watched the show. Which is simultaneously a great contrast, the mystery man with a lot of layers, but also something that implies there's maybe more similarities between the two than there might appear at a glance.
Huh! Didn't really think about that, how Ryuki's big eyes connect him more with the audience. Great point!

I mean, Ryuki and Knight's personal monsters ain't exactly done practically.
Look, if you're suggesting the show
had
to do the Ryuki Dragon as CG instead of, as
I'd
prefer, a Chinese New Year Parade Dragon, we are just going to have to be on opposite sides of this one.

I did like how immediately Ren was like Oh Okay I Guess I'll Just Murder This New Guy. He's so, like,
blase
about it. Oh, to be able to treat executing a rival like making a sandwich.
