I love it when they write scenes that are clearly designed specifically to be fun for the extras, and this is the perfect example of that. The movie starts picking up speed rapidly from this point and pulls off a solid balancing act by focusing the movie squarely on Sento (something that was often not true of the series itself), without screwing over anyone else too badly. I mean, any die-hard Mad Rogue fans will be disappointed, but those don't exist, so it's fine. The narrative here keeps its attention where it needs to be and doesn't clutter up the story with anything unnecessary.
Much like True Ending, Be The One tries its hand at enticing the viewer with a bit more relevance to the show than usual, and it too faces the question of how to do that while still letting the TV series stand on its own. For Build, the answer seems to be making the juicy revelations much less juicy than they sound at first. Learning there were three more random guys helping Evolt pull the strings the whole time sounds cool, and yet makes little difference when all is said and done. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (and might even be the best way to do it), but the villains here definitely strike me as the weak link of the film. They serve their purpose well, but aside from Kamen Rider Blood looking cool, there's little memorable about them. They have Evolt's generic motivations and goals with little of his charisma.
That being said, the drama with Sento that's at the heart of the story is well done, and acts as a microcosm of the show's themes, which is always good to see in a summer movie. What's more, the direction here is
great
. I'm now aware to expect this from Kamihoriuchi, but lots of shots here really put the
movie
in this movie, for lack of a better description. Even the way the credits roll is more artsy than usual.
Overall I was as impressed as I usually am with Build. The things that bothered me most are extremely minor nitpicks. Namely, I was pretty sure the Rabbit and Dragon Bottles stayed their new colors on TV, but even if I'm right about that, the shenanigans the show pulled with the Dragon Jelly already made me aware Build is willing to play a bit loose with continuity for dramatic effect. Also Zi-O's cameo just came off as silly, but it's a total nonissue given its role as a simple after-credits bonus preview. It would've been much cooler to someone who hasn't already been seeing Zi-O fight dudes every week for months now.
Overall, the movie tries to be a connective tissue as well as a toss away, passable, and forgettable action piece.
I've never expected build to continuously explain details with flashbacks and "facts" throughout the show when it started airing. It's nice to see a show that comtinously raises questions and answering them as well as dealing with moral obiligations and hope as a major theme. More said, More doing as well.
However, the more revelation in the later Half kind of downplay a lot ot storytelling like how Katsuragi's intelligences, innovations, and "villain/selfish" side are not what we believed. The build driver is credit to Shinobu, the father in terms mimick the evolt's driver. Also, now the movie just make Evolt less of a mastermind with three helping hands. The same with Shouichi isn't the mastermind, but just someone manipulated and possessed by an alien. The whole Martians' mythology vs the truth given was quite a letdown. The 30s was still strong with fast pace action. Then hits the forgettable 40s because of the movie interference as well as over powered Evolt that sometimes fight equally with Genius, but other times massively stronger than Genius. Genius didn't event ultilize any Clever combos or unique fighting styles like previous final form incarnations. Heck, RR TT was cooler.
