Every toy line has a "lemon" ... a toy that you have high hopes for but just fails to miss the mark. Sometimes those lemons end up moldy - where they're worse than you thought they'd be. And while the
Power Rangers Dino Charge
line, especially the 5" figure line, has given us plenty of gems and diamonds, one toy in particular fell out of the "crappy toy" tree and hit every single branch on the way down.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a gallery that I purposely held back as to not muddy up the crystal clear waters of our
Toku Toy Box
give away. I present to you today the gallery for the
Power Rangers Dino Charge
5" figure known as
Slammer
.
The Figure
Let's start with the good points. It has incredible detail! Again, as always,
Bandai America
grabs Hasbro by the balls and goes "WE CAN SCULPT JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN YOU!". Except this time, they grabbed them, yelled that statement, and then tripped while walking out of the office down a stair well which caused them to hit a fire alarm which turned all the sprinklers on in the office resulting in a fine from the city as well as a fine for all the damaged office furniture.
The sculpting is great. But it's wasted on a toy that just isn't good.
The figure sports a whopping 7 points of total articulation. I'm not sure if the legs can move outwards side to side because the metal skirt is blocking his path. He also suffers from "Sledge brown", meaning they had left over paint from Sledge and just covered this guy in it. His head can spin around 360 degrees, so you can torment any small children you have by saying
Slammer
is possessed.
Here's the deal - the figure LOOKS great in sculpting and I can forgive a lackluster paint job - trust me, I collect
Bandai America
toys, I'm happy when a figure is more than two colors (looking at you
Dino Cycle
figures). But this guy's articulation mimics a homemade cosplay costume and in this day and age it's kind of laughable if you get that in a line that does feature sometimes up to 17 points of articulation.
The Accessories
He doesn't come with any. But if he did, I'm sure they'd be pretty lackluster too.
The Good
The sculpting again is spot on and amazing
Someone, somewhere, will be happy that
Slammer
is a toy. Someone. Somewhere.
The Bad
The articulation. 7 whole points. SEVEN.
I always thought he was supposed to be kind of pirate-ish, but the paint job makes him look more like a washed up sailor. Not very threatening, just creepy in a not-scary-monster type of way.
The paint. Everything about it. From the choice of brown to the super light blue on the pants. It's just not fitting.
The Overall Conclusion
This is my opinion and some may question it when we have characters that have even less articulation in
Bones
and similar articulation in
Puzzler
, but I just don't like this toy. While the prior two mentioned have their low points (articulation and paint), they felt like GOOD toys, solid toys that as a kid you would easily play with. This one doesn't look appealing, it is lackluster in your hands, and is overall a forgettable piece. Every line has a lemon, and for the regular
Dino Charge
line, this one is the lemon in my opinion. Unless you're collecting the whole line (like me), this one is an easy pass. Save it on a villain figure that's worth it - like
Sledge
,
Snide
,
Sting Rage
, or any of the other previous villains we've done galleries of.
