So this thread seems in need of a bump and with the big Twitch stream finally over I've now watched more Power Rangers in a week or two than I have in years (averaging five or so episodes per series). There's a few series in particular I have thoughts on though, so I'm just going to talk about them. Namely the Disney seasons I've never actually seen more than a few episodes of because I stopped following the show for a while after SPD. Speaking of which:
Mystic Force:
I'm not really sure what made me stop caring back when it aired but I never got into this show. Maybe it was the theme song. Maybe SPD was just that awesome and it spoiled me. I mean the theme song was
definitely
part of it though. Anyway, the show itself seems pretty alright. I think if I had given it more of a chance I would've found myself getting into it at the time. And Koragg seems pretty much as cool as Wolzard was in Magiranger, so that's good.
Operation Overdrive:
I saw the first few episodes and uh, yeah, it's pretty mediocre. I'd have to watch it in full but it seems just barely better than Megaforce? I mean, the cast is way less likable, but not only did OO not hype itself up as a celebration of all things Ranger, it at least got as far as having interesting ideas before f***ing everything up. They even foreshadow the crap out of the big endgame twist with Mack right at the start of the series, showing better long-term storytelling than good ol' Megafarce ever managed. Also I think I like the theme song? It's so bad it loops around into being fun in that cheesy Power Rangers kind of way. Calling these guys "the number one team" is just false advertising though.
Jungle Fury:
Seems pretty good, to be honest. The final three episodes especially are a really strong, even pretty epic finale overall, even if the very last episode packs in a bit too much fighting for its own good. I mean with dialogue as genuinely amazing as "I'm better than okay. I'm good.", how can you go wrong? The show successfully takes a lot of the elements that made Gekiranger so awesome and does its own thing with them, which is great. Not to mention it has RJ, who might be the greatest PR mentor. He's essentially just some dirty hippie, but he covers all the bases at least as good as the other guys. Wisdom that's actually wise, willing to take to the battlefield himself, not overly stern, the list goes on. Maybe if Gosei had trained under this guy instead of Zordon Megaforce would've been a lot better.
RPM:
Uh... wow. Let me put it this way, I watched the first four episodes, promptly stopped watching, and decided I'm going to get around to a proper full watch of it sooner rather than later. I don't know
how
I didn't appreciate this series sooner. It's pure postmodern brilliance.
Samurai:
I started feeling bad about being so hard on Samurai when it aired, which is a little shocking to me. Maybe it's just the residual Kobayashi making me biased, but I kind of feel like it might secretly be the best Neo-Saban series. Dino Charge has originality going for it, to be sure, and you could VERY easily argue it deserves that title, but Samurai at least remembered you're supposed to get
better
as you go along, and not worse. Plus its hugely rushed production cycle gives it the most solid excuses for its poor quality out of any of the recent shows.
There's just a lot I found myself appreciating way more than I did at the time seeing some of these episodes again. For one the overall atmosphere and pacing of the show seems a little more relaxed and decompressed in a good way. I can't describe it very well but a lot of episodes of the shows since feel very "cramped", which in Megaforce's case is easy to see why but with Dino Charge and Ninja Steel I'm not sure why I'd feel that way.
I also thought Bulk and Spike were really lame, but having been exposed to Victor and Monty for eight episodes, suddenly I miss their antics. The whole "becoming samurai" shtick actually captured what made Bulk and Skull the legends they are way better than the comic relief we've gotten since. Bulk is constantly talking about the mental discipline and nobility of being a samurai and stuff like that, wanting to pass those qualities onto Spike, rather than just wanting to hit people with a sword because it's cool or something, showing that genuinely heroic side that makes him such a likable dork in the first place. What's heroic about Victor and Monty?
Finally, Antonio is great. I mean, this isn't a new thought, I've felt this way since the second he showed up back in 2011, but man, what a shot in the arm he was for Samurai. He brought a ton of energy and charisma to a show that was frequently very dull, and his whole backstory and personality make him super relatable and super likable. Even his stupid Dora the Explorer speech quirks manage to be endearing. He kind of transcends the mediocre show he's in and might actually be one of my favorite Sixth Rangers, which is pretty crazy.

So yeah, props to Twitch and Saban for doing the whole marathon thing. It's really restored my enthusiasm for the franchise to a level it hasn't been at in forever, even if it had the unfortunate side effect of reminding me just how much of a slump the show is in right now.
