So I waited to watch this and Shinobi until all three parts were out, and I have to say, I
vastly
preferred the continuing adventures of Starninger to this... well, "travesty" is definitely too harsh. Let's see here...
It's like, taken at face value, it's a solid and intriguing plot that keeps up a good sense of tension and has some interesting characters, but it has the problem that these are allegedly supposed to be the characters from Kamen Rider Ryuki. I don't know what the hell it is with Inoue, because the episodes of the actual show he wrote are fine, but between this, Episode Final, and 13 Riders, I've come to the conclusion I like this guy a lot more when he's writing his own characters. Like, could we have gotten Rider Time: Agito instead? Or actual closure on Faiz already?
Ryuki is the show that made me a Rider fan, and will always hold an extremely special place in my heart, which is why it pained me so much how little this special did for me in spite of all the legitimate qualities it has. It probably doesn't help that Raia has always been my favorite Rider from that show, so seeing him here... yeah. Look, even if I wanted to, I couldn't pretend being heterosexual was some iconic part of his personality, so in of itself that part is not a problem. What is a problem, is that being gay was
also
never a character trait he displayed. Nor was he untrustworthy, murderous, or literally anything he's shown to be in these three episodes, and that gets to the crux of the issue I have with this whole endeavor:
What's the point of any of this?
I think I remember a thread a few years back asking about what a hypothetical Ryuki reunion special would be like, and if I remember correctly, I basically just asked "Why?", because that's what it comes down to.
Was this a story that let us see the characters we know and love back in action again? No, because thanks to the convenient excuse of amnesia, most of them are varying degrees of different, and none of them get to do anything particularly exciting. Honestly, try looking at how pathetic Odin was here and telling me that's accurate. There's not a single cool moment I can remember from this having just watched it, and dozens I can remember from the show I've only seen in full 8 freakin' years ago.
Was this a story that expanded the narrative and themes of the original show?
Absolutely not
. The plot serves as something of an epilogue to Ryuki, yeah, but it's not meaningfully connected in any way, and despite having Another Ryuki be a sort of parallel to Kanzaki, they don't explore any of this stuff. The deepest this thing got was "people fighting can be a real downer", something that was already
long
established by all the Ryuki material we already have.
So what does it have to offer? A largely pointless tie-in to Zi-O? They even messed that up by having Geiz mention how Another Ryuki can't be beaten because he's got Mirror World powers, but... Zi-O II? Haven't you guys already done this before if you know who Shinji is? Or do Sougo and Geiz ALSO have convenient amnesia?
I just... I usually stick up for Inoue more than most, but despite plenty of interesting ideas and well-executed scenes like Shinji and Ren's final conversation, this whole thing left me totally cold. I guess it does its job as a nostalgic trip back to Ryuki, but it all comes off too superficial for my tastes. As someone who actually is
hugely
nostalgic for this show, I didn't feel like it captured anything about it I liked. Arguably it captures the spirit of stuff like 13 Riders, but all that would mean is that it's a shallow, heartless recreation of something way better.
