Lotta people feeling real bummed out this week!
Not that the episode is devoid of humor, of course. The only reason Twokaiser is feeling so down is because that's apparently one of Zyuoh The World's
superpowers
, a gag that exists both for the functional reason of keeping Zox from hogging the spotlight, and also just to let you know Koumura hasn't forgotten how amusing the previous anniversary Sentai she wrote was too. I don't know, I might be reading into it too much, but something about how specific a bit that was to pull from struck me as more... affectionate, I guess, than your average usage of a Sentai Gear. Although again, it's not like this show hasn't done clever jokes like that before.
Moving on from Zox, one of the other big highlights of the comedy this time is Zyuran giving this epic motivational speech that finally pushes the team past the funk they're in... which is all completely incomprehensible because of the entire gimmick of the episode. It's deeply hilarious, but part of the reason why is that
it still kinda works dramatically?
Yatsude and Secchan may be perplexed, but as a viewer with the privilege of knowing what this whole situation is about, man, I can somehow still feel the
passion
behind that conversation. The scene is loads of goofy fun while still being a genuine reminder of how much Zyuran is always looking out for Kaito.
And then of course, what that conversation
is
all about, which is where the true drama of the episode comes in, is how the big reveal with Hakaiser last episode is affecting everybody. For the Kikainoid members of the team, it's a fairly straightforward dilemma of them knowing they need to tell Kaito but not being able to, in an emotional sense, taken to a properly Super Sentai extreme when they're rendered incapable of telling Kaito, in a literal, physical sense, thanks to the monster of the week. Kind of a cute way to play out that lack of communication, really. It's like all the tension that usually comes from that sort of plot, but you can't hold it against the characters for not talking things out, because it's really not their fault! ...Kind of! I like the note the episode ends on where Zyuran acknowledges that they should've spoken up earlier to begin with, but without Kaito or anybody actually holding it against them at all. It's just nice how wholesome this team is?
I don't think I'm doing the best job describing this, but one of Zenkaiger's strong points is how it always finds these distinctly Zenkaiger-y angles to approach its plots from, and you couldn't ask for many better examples of that than the way this one takes such a serious emotional hook and makes it quirky and positive in tone, all without actually undercutting any of that emotion.
As expected, this one does end up being pretty heavy for Kaito. The show didn't wait long at all to get him up to speed on Hakaiser being his dad, and the scene where he finds out knows to take itself seriously, because this is serious for Kaito. He's trying to look on the upside by the end, as always, but in the moment, you can definitely see a vulnerability to Kaito that's often buried under the surface. It's a slower, more dramatic scene than you'd often expect from Zenkaiger, and that's exactly what makes it work. That, and the show taking things even further by having Stacey finding out the horrible truth at the same time, and it's his reaction that might be even more interesting.
It was already smart of the show to do this idea of having Stacey try and make a partner out of Hakaiser, but it's yet smarter to have him, just after swallowing his pride enough to go through with it, to be there right in the heat of the moment, ultimately deciding to take Kaito's dad away from him. We'll see how the series digs into that from here, but I adore how much you can read into his reaction there. You can tell it's a decision made in haste, before he totally has time to process what's going on, but I'd like to think what pushed Stacey to do what he did there is the thought that this was yet another thing Kaito was going to have that he doesn't, and I find that fascinating. It's this sort of dark mirror of Kaito's own issues, where Stacey is determined not to lose one of the very few things in his life that's even
potentially
going well.
From Kaito's perspective, Stacey just stole his dad from him, right after they were finally reunited; from Stacey's point of view, Kaito was going to steal his only real ally from
him
, right after he finally accepted the help. Two very different characters dealing with surprisingly similar sorrow in two very different ways. They really do make perfect rivals for one another.
