Okay cool there is a world called SDtopia!
That's a very cool way for Toei/Bandai to pay tribute to Super Deformed designs which basically kept them afloat during some rough years. For anyone who didn't know, Bandai's SD Gundam line sold extremely well during a time when their other products were underperforming against heavy hitters like Takara's Diaclone toy line. The SD-ified version of their characters also led to the ability for their characters and toys to be licensed into video games (somewhat skirting the licenses Bandai had with anime studios). It also widened the target audiences of some franchises and made them more approachable. Today the concept of Super Deformed characters is so common place it's just considered a cute design such as Hello Kitty and Nendoroid. It's definitely one of my favorite style of toy designs!

Super cute and fun episode from this show as usual. We're still in a sort of introductory arc to the new group of characters, and my guess we'll still be there for the next few episodes (next week looks to focus on Flint, and the week after will probably debut Twokaiser's mecha), but there's still plenty time to spare for Zenkaiger's usual bizarre shenanigans. Making it always noon all around the planet should probably be a lot bigger deal than just making everyone tired, but that's exactly the kind of children's show predicament I've come to expect and love from this show.
That said, and this is is probably super nitpicky, but it actually bugged me a lot when Twokaiser changed forms without acknowledging Ricky or Cutanner first, and that they were nowhere in sight after he changed back! Like it's only been one episode, and they're already at risk of dropping what makes the conceit of these forms unique in the first place, that its a fusion of Zox and one of his brothers, by just treating the little SD buddies as just stock footage and an extra voice layer. I don't think what he did can be defined as any form of sneaking. Last edited by FreshToku; 05-10-2021 at 12:22 AM.. |

The converge Kamen Rider figures can also be expensive and the ones that I like are unfortunately part of a set that is somewhat expensive that I want like the set that Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Hyper Muteki is in and the Ryuki set just to name two. |

This was the first episode that really did nothing for me. I'm glad we got the backstory on why their brothers look like that, and I'm kind of glad we got to see the conflict between the Zenkaigers and Twokaiser, but even with all that, I really found myself uninvested in this episode.
Kinda had the same lack of energy everyone had in the show thanks to High Noon World. Oh well, here's to hoping things pick back up next episode.

How does Zenkaiger manage to be this good and fun every single week? There's still, obviously, lots of room for things to go wrong but... this is seriously turning out to be one of my favourite Tokusatsu shows ever

Wow did I ever like this one. Did a spectacular job making me love Twokaiser while also doing a spectacular job remembering this isn't a show about Twokaiser. Those statements shouldn't even make sense together, either, which makes it all the more appropriate for Zenkaiger. That's just the kind of crazy show this is! Starting off quickly with Twokaiser, I'm definitely starting to see the appeal. Take the dancing, for example. It was a cute enough gimmick on its own, but the script here makes it a point why he insists on doing it so incessantly, and in a very casual, smooth way at that. All it takes is a few lines from the monster expressing frustration with Zox's showboating, and suddenly I get it – Zox knows it cheeses off his opponents, which is all the more reason for him to never stop dancing. I mean, I'm sure that was obvious to most people, but I genuinely didn't stop to give it any thought before this (dancing for no reason at all would not be out of the question with this show's tone), so it ended up impressing me more than it probably should have. Beyond that, action scenes with the guy continue to be fun, his entrance into that tunnel was genuinely too cool, and establishing a proper emotional stake for him to be fighting is much appreciated. I think you could complain about how abruptly the information is tossed out there, but again, that feels very Zenkaiger to me, just having Flint blurt it out in frustration to shut Kaito up instead of prolonging the melodramatic mystery of their motivations for weeks or something. Way more important than anything about how Twokaiser is cool, though, is all the stuff about how cool he's not. This is where the episode really went right for me. It was fun from the start, of course, but it was only once the plot came together that I realized this is probably going down as another personal favorite. I'm sure examples exist, but it strikes me as pretty rare for a Sentai to do an episode this disconnected from the big extra Ranger basically immediately after they debut. Ordinarily, the whole direction for the show ends up being defined for a while by gradually tying the new character into the team – which is what's happening here – but the thing this particular episode does, that I don't see very often, is have the arc be the main team reaffirming themselves as the true heroes we should be rooting for. Zox will no doubt continue to grow a conscience as things progress and he inevitably becomes another part of the group, and that'll be neat as well, but right here and now, Twokaiser is basically just some jerk who goes around causing tons of collateral damage (which admittedly made for a sequence with a very nice sense of scale) that the episode ends up mostly leaving behind. The continued refusal to introduce his robot especially helps on that front, as he has zero participation in the final bit of action for the story. And it's totally fine that he does end up taking a back seat! Like I said upfront, they still do more than enough to shill the new guy; it's just that this story makes it abundantly clear why he can't always be the center of attention. That scene with the team saving everyone from the rubble is one of the best of the whole show. I mean, I'm a sucker for seeing heroes actually directly rescue people to begin with, but then Koumura has to go and write that bit where Kaito and a random Kikainoid simultaneously ask each other if the other is okay and make it perfect. I struggle to describe it, but that's another fantastic example of the kind of character interaction I feel is so unique to her scripts. It's such a quick moment, and maybe not that significant, and yet it also gets across so much meaning in so few words. Just the sort of warmth behind that, I guess, how the first thing Kaito and Literally Just Some Guy were thinking about there was somebody else, and how that contrasts with Zox. And then after that, the team does their roll call while tanking bullets for the same crowd of civilians! What even IS this show, besides awesome!?

McCree from Overwatch would love the scenario of this episode. Perpetual High Noon.
It was also funny when the MotW said Zox was dancing again. It's like he can't believe how rediculous Zox is.

I am curious what Norwegian toku fans think of this considering they have certain periods during the year where it is just daytime 24/7.

Are we sure SDtopia isn't just where Robotack and Kabutack actually live?
Anyway, I'm really enjoying how they're introducing Zox/TwoKaiser these episodes. Usually we get the new member a little later, but they've been doing a great job here. Nice detail with them trying to save their family members to give them a (slight) reason to join forces, I almost thought Zox was just DiEnd in Sentai. The world getting stuck in an eternal high noon would be the ultimate wild west free-for-all you'd ever see, but wouldn't people notice they're clocks? It's not like this is the stone age, then again, they probably thought their watches broke or something. The best way to enjoy shows like these is to forget logic and just let it all play out. And the Kikainoids are just impossible to not like, almost everything they do is enjoyable. And the Zenkaigers doing their role call while being pelted with bullets was absolutely hilarious. Sentai really do commit to themselves. Next week: *Promised Neverland Opening 1 Touch Off plays* |
