-Monstars. Creatures of the night. The twelve Tribes and Clans that make up the council that discuss their interactions with the humans face a dire situation. Will someone come forth to restore the balance?- Episode One: Rise! The Day Things Changed "Oi, Rina! Wake up! It's time for breakfast!" Rubbing her eyes, a young girl sat up. "Okay papa, I'll be down!" Jumping from her bed, she made her way to her mirror. Fixing up her hair and changing into her uniform, she rushed down the stairs into the kitchen. At the stove was a young man with unkempt hair flipping pancakes. "You ready for your first day?" he said, setting some pancakes onto the table. "Yup! And what about you papa? Ready for your new job?" "Of course, why wouldn't I be?" he chuckled as Rina took a bite of food. As he sat down with her, there was a sudden knock at the door. "Who could that be, papa?" "I don't know, I wasn't expecting any visitors," he said, opening the door. "Hey, how's my favorite little niece doing?!" asked a man in a gray trench coat. "Uncle Kuro!" the girl said, jumping out of her seat to hug the man at the door. "Been a long time, Gurei." "It has, brother. Sit down, we were just about to eat breakfast." "Oh Gurei, pancakes again? You know I'm-" "Allergic to wheat, right Uncle?!" "That's right! You're such a smart girl, remembering that!" Kuro said, lifting Rina. "Would you look at the time? Rina, you'll be late for school!" "Oh, right papa!" she said as her uncle put her back on the ground. "The bus will pick you up, just make sure to follow the other children to it, okay?" "Okay papa! Love you!" Rina said, grabbing her backpack as she walked out the door. "Seriously Gurei, human food? How can you stomach that?" "You know my physiology is different than yours, Kuro." "That girl is coming along nicely-" "Don't you dare." "Whoa, not like that Gurei. The clan has a truce with you, we don't touch the girl, you remain exiled and don't do... THAT again," Kuro said, making his way to the living room as he sat on the couch. Gurei began to clean up the table, placing dishes into the sink before heading over to Kuro. "I still don't know how you got attached to that human. Taking her in as your own." Kuro immediately leapt from his seat as Gurei rushed forward, impaling his arm into the couch. "Oh please brother, partial transformation isn't enough," Kuro said, watching as Gurei pulled his arm out of the couch. Looking down at his monstrous arm, Gurei watched as it turned back into a human arm. "You've gotten rusty, brother. To think they sent me here for you." "They?" "The Council of course. Akasama recommended you." "Akasama?!" "Yes, the leader of our clan recommended you." "For what?" "To be his replacement as our clan's representative," Kuro said grinning as he pulled out a strange orb. "Oh don't tell me-" "Ready to teleport?" "No!" "Wrong answer," Kuro said, tossing the orb onto the ground, filling the room with dark smoke. -"Whooooaaaaaa!!!!" Gurei yelled, as he found himself floating above a group of people at a large round table. “Oh, Gurei, forgot to mention, that magic doesn’t last that long, you’ll fall down soon.” “WHAT?!” Gurei yelled as he felt the shift of gravity. Just as he was about to hit the table, Gurei maneuvered himself until he landed on his feet. As he attempted to maintain his balance, Gurei could hear the murmurs of the crowd. “Tch, what a pain.” “This is the one they want to represent their Clan?” “No wonder Ghouls have the lowest power here.” “What was that?!” Gurei said looking around at the murmuring crowd. “Gurei, get down from there,” a familiar voice to Gurei said. “Akasama…” As he eased himself off the table, the murmurs continued to grow. Reaching his brother and Akasama, Gurei watched as they pulled out a seat. “Take a seat Gurei.” “Akasama, something doesn’t add up. Why do you want me to take the role of representative from you?” “You’ll see soon enough. Now sit.” “We now call this meeting to order. Representatives, state your name and affiliation,” a man said, sitting directly across from Gurei. “Raika, Lycan Clan’s heir,” said a gruff looking teenager to the left of the man. “Cleo, heiress and priestess of the Gorgon Tribe,” said a teenage girl sitting next to Raika, fiddling with her hair. “Mito, champion of the Minotaur Tribe!” “Narissa, current queen of the Sirens.” As they continued on, Gurei looked towards Akasama and Kuro. “Um, these are all pretty high-profile Monstars…are you sure I’m the one you want as a representative?” Gurei asked as he watched the representatives begin to talk amongst themselves. “I’m sure of it, Gurei. Now it’s your turn,” Akasama said, placing his hand on Gurei’s shoulder. Gurei stood up and looked around at the table. “Gurei, the Ghoul’s representative…keeper of the Artifact.” The murmurs ceased as soon as Gurei sat back down. “Keeper of the Artifact?” Raika asked, getting up from his chair. “Wait, Gurei…I know that name! Your father was the one who went to the United States and caused a commotion right?!” “Yes, my father was the ‘Jersey Devil.’ What of it?” “Akasama’s mind must be going if he really thinks that you’re the rightful keeper of the Artifact. After all, your father is part of the reason why we are in hid-“ Raika stopped as soon as he saw the hand up against his face. “May I remind you Raika, that he is my father too,” Kuro said, easing his claws. “Oi, Akasama, it’d make better sense for you to make this one the representative and keeper of the Artifact.” “Now Raika, there is a special reason why Akasama chose him,” said the man sitting across from Gurei. “Now, we’ll get down to business.” The man stood up and pointed to space above the center of the table. “There are two reasons that I am holding this meeting. The first is that…amongst all of your clans and tribes…are usurpers.” “Usurpers?” “There has been talk that a group of various Monstars are hunting prey on the days they aren’t supposed to. These usurpers are also attempting to go after your leader’s lives.” “Tch, my father is in no danger,” Raika said, placing his feet onto the table. “Nor am I,” Narissa said snapping her fingers as two large men came close to her seat. “Of course, I know that all of you have your defenses, but I also wanted to give this other warning. The Hunter is back.” “The Hunter?!” “That’s impossible, he should’ve died centuries ago!” “The various deaths suggest that it may be his descendant. Be on high alert. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves, I will be speaking to your predecessors,” the man said. “Akasama, does this mean that the reason you picked me was-“ “You’ll know shortly, Gurei. Now if you excuse me, I must speak with him,” Akasama said, leaving Gurei’s side. “My oh my, isn’t that little Gurei?” someone said. Gurei looked around to see where the voice came from before he felt a hand on his shoulder. “It’s been a while,” the man said, smiling. “Shiro…” “When was it last that I saw you? Oh right…when you were exiled.” Gurei suddenly felt the extreme force push into his shoulder, sending him flying across the room. “Gurei!” Kuro yelled, running to Shiro, claws ready. “Oi, bastard, what do you think you’re doing?” Raika said, getting up from his seat. “Oh, the Lycan boy. Don’t worry, this doesn’t concern you.” “When you’re not invited to the meeting and toss a representative around, yes it does.” Shiro looked around to see that each representative had taken on his or her true form, poised and ready to fight. “Oh you misunderstand everyone, I simply came here to welcome back my dear friend. Now Gurei, tell them, what was that incident 13 years ago? Oh yes…when you slaughtered that poor couple, during one of our neutral days.” “He did what?!” “Like father, like son I guess. Now what I don’t understand is…why did you get exiled?” The representatives reverted back into their human disguises as they watched Gurei get back up. “Before I pushed you down, I smelled human on you,” Shiro said, licking his lips. “But that can’t be, you’re not the type to interact intimately with anybody. Although, the smell was…youthful…” Shiro’s eyes widened before he turned to Gurei with a devilish grin. “So that is what happened…Oh, this will be good!” Shiro said, laughing maniacally, tossing an orb onto the ground. “SHIT!” Gurei ran towards Shiro just as he disappeared. “Kuro! I need one of those orbs!” “Why?...No…he’s going to go after Rina!” “Hurry!” -“Hey Rina, I have a question.” “What is it, Sachi?” Rina asked her friend as the two of them were walking down the street away from the school. “Where’s your necklace that you always wear?” “Huh?” Rina said, looking down. “Oh, must’ve left it at home.” “Speaking of home, your dad…” “Hmm?” “He’s how old again?” “I think he said 21.” “But you’re 13.” “Yeah, well that’s cause papa-“ “Adopted the child after all.” Rina and Sachi turned to see Shiro looking right at them. “I’m sorry sir, but who are you?” “A friend of your dad’s. He sent me to pick you up.” “Sachi, run,” Rina whispered. “What?” “Get help, this guy doesn’t seem right.” “Okay,” Sachi said, running away. “Oh dear, why did your little friend leave? I was hoping to have some more fun-“ Shiro was suddenly pushed aside by Kuro. “Uncle Kuro?!” “Rina, run!” “Oh, Kuro, always spoiling my fun,” Shiro said as his face began to change. Rina watched on as he suddenly changed shape, taking on a jagged monstrous appearance. The spiky white monster stared at Rina as Kuro punched it. “Oh, Kuro, that won’t work.” “You’re right…Sorry Rina, this is what I really look like,” Kuro said as his form began to shift as well. Looking like a black version of what Shiro had become, Kuro tackled the other monster. “Rina!” Gurei yelled running towards them. “Papa…Uncle Kuro is…” “Never mind that Rina, we got to get out of here!” Gurei said, grabbing her hand. As the two began to run away, Rina turned to see Kuro slammed to the ground as he attempted to kick off Shiro. After making their way to an abandoned lot, Gurei hid himself and Rina behind a dumpster. “Papa, what’s going on, who was that?” “Stay here, okay? I’ll handle everything.” “Oh Gurei…where are you?” Gurei looked out from behind the dumpster to see Shiro dragging the limp body of Kuro. “Don’t worry about your brother, he’s only beaten enough that he’s only close to death. Come on out, I want to talk to you.” “Papa, don’t.” “Be a good girl and stay here, Rina,” Gurei said, walking out. “What do you want Shiro?” “Oh, I just want to see you suffer. Especially after the hell I was put through thanks to you.” “What?” “You really don’t know what happened after you were exiled, do you?” Gripping Kuro’s neck, Shiro lifted him off the ground. “Your rat of a big brother told the elders about my involvement with that night. I was kept as a prisoner for years!” Shiro yelled, tossing Kuro at Gurei. Catching his brother, Gurei checked his pulse. “He’s still alive, thank goodness.” “Not for long,” Shiro said, suddenly appearing before Gurei. Before Gurei could say a word he felt Shiro’s fist hit his stomach. “I missed out on so much of my life because of you! I was practically starving!” Shiro kicked Gurei’s head, knocking him down. “All because I went with you during your forbidden hunt!” Shiro gripped Gurei’s head and slammed it on the ground. “Come on girly, come out from behind there. I know you’re there. I can smell you.” “Rina, don’t do it…” Gurei said, struggling to get back up. Rina ignored his pleas and walked out, staring down at the monster pushing him down. “Have you ever wondered why your papa is so different compared to other people?” Rina stared at him in silence. “Show her Gurei. Show her what you really are.” “No.” “If you want her to live even longer you will,” Shiro said, pointing his claws at Rina. Gurei closed his eyes and was engulfed in a bright light. Shielding her eyes, Rina waited until the light faded to look again. A gray monster with an appearance similar to Shiro and Kuro, now occupied the spot where Gurei was. “This is the real form of your precious papa. He’s a Ghoul, just like me. And do you know why you two look so different? And why he’s so young?” “SHIRO DON’T!” Gurei yelled. “It’s because he killed your parents. Your real parents.” Rina’s gaze shifted from Shiro and onto Gurei. “He felt so guilty that he, a mere child, took the life of two new parents and devoured them. When he discovered you there, he requested that he raise you himself. At first I thought he did so he could fatten you up and eat you later, but now I see what he’s done. Deceived you and raised you as one of his own.” “Shiro, stop it!” Gurei begged, before feeling Shiro push his fist down onto his shoulder. “GAH!!!” “Now girly, why don’t I do you a favor?” Shiro said, leaving Gurei to writhe in pain on the ground. “I can reunite you with your parents,” said as he began to make his way towards her, his mouth agape as he licked his fangs. “What are you talking about? Papa is my parent.” Shiro stopped in his tracks. “What was that?” “And I’ve known that he killed my real parents,” Rina said shifting her gaze back to Shiro. “Rina…how long have you known?” Gurei said, getting up on his feet. “Since I was five. When Uncle Kuro came down for my birthday. I overheard you two talking. At first I didn’t know what to think. I didn’t understand those words until later on. But what you did doesn’t change that I still see you as my papa,” Rina said, walking towards Gurei. “You raised me, you’re the only parent I need,” she said with a smile on her face as Gurei turned back into a human. “Rina…” “Hate to spoil the touching moment, but I’m going to kill you both now!” Shiro said, brandishing his claws as he began to walk towards the two of them. “Rina, stay back,” Gurei said, standing in front of her. “Gurei! Catch!” Gurei looked to his left to see a strange object being thrown at him. Catching it, he looked down to see what it was before looking back at his brother. “Kuro, your injuries-” “Don’t mind me! Pour your power into that and use the Artifact with it!” “The Artifact?...” Gurei held his hands out in front of his waist as a strange belt formed around it, with a mystical voice declaring “FRIGHTDRIVER!” On the side of the belt was a lever looked like a skeletal arm, while the center of it was hollow. Looking back at the object his brother tossed him, Gurei gripped it as a gray aura surrounded his arm. Releasing his grip, Gurei looked down to see the object had changed shape. Holding up the newly formed skull-like object, Gurei pressed a button on the side of it. A human scream emitted from the skull as its jaw opened before a voice spoke, declaring “GHOUL!” “Kuro, you and Rina get out of here.” “Got it! Come on Rina,” Kuro said, stumbling. With the two of them out of sight and Shiro coming closer, Gurei held the skull in front of him. “I won’t let you!” Shiro yelled, as he began to run towards Gurei. “Henshin.” Plugging the skull into the center of the belt, Gurei bent the lever into the center and pushed the jaws of the skull into it. The belt began to emit a violet light as a gray colored apparition resembling Gurei’s Ghoul form rose from it. Gurei himself was then surrounded in the light and was covered in a black suit of armor as the apparition circled him. The belt declared “GHOUL SKIN! RISE FROM THE DEAD, EAT THE FLESH!” as the apparition split in half and covered the right side of the armored Gurei. As the transformation finished, the newly armored Gurei stared at his rushing opponent. Shiro swept his arm towards Gurei but was caught by the wrist. “What?!” “My turn.” Gurei balled his hand into a fist as a blade came out his wrist. Swinging his arm towards Shiro, Gurei slashed at the monster with the newly formed blade, breaking off one of his spikes. “GAAH!” “That was for my brother,” Gurei said, throwing Shiro into the center of the lot. “Damn you!!!” Shiro screamed, running back towards Gurei. “You just don’t learn, do you?” Gurei said, dodging each of Shiro’s attacks before grabbing his arm. “This is for attacking me earlier,” Gurei said, pulling Shiro’s arm behind him before pushing into his shoulder. An audible snap resonated in the area as Shiro began to writhe in pain on the ground. “Where’s all that hatred and vigor you had earlier Shiro?” Gurei asked, kicking the monster in the face. “So…this is why…they wanted you as a representative…to sniff out the usurper…” Shiro said, getting back up. “…You’re the usurper?” “Eh…wait, you didn’t know?” “Not at all.” “But they gave you the Artifact!” “They didn’t give me the Artifact.” “What?” “I took it,” Gurei said, pulling the lower jaw from the skull on the FrightDriver down. “But how?! The only way is to either have been given it by Akasama or by-” “Beating him in combat. Which is what I’m about to do to you now,” Gurei said, pushing the top jaw upward. The belt declared and began to repeat “DIGGING YOUR GRAVE! DIGGING YOUR GRAVE!” as several apparitions began to form around Gurei. “Beat Akasama at combat…Who…WHAT ARE YOU?!” Shiro yelled, running towards Gurei with his claws extended. Gurei pointed at Shiro, causing the apparitions to surround him. “What?! No, let go!” Shiro said, struggling as he watched Gurei leap into the air. Some of the apparitions left Shiro and reappeared behind Gurei, pushing him towards the white ghoul. Gurei then kicked forward as his foot was engulfed in violet energy that took the form of a skull. As the kick collided with Shiro, Gurei landed behind the white ghoul. “To answer your question from earlier Shiro, this is what they call the form I have taken in the scriptures- Kamen Rider, Fright,” Gurei said, pushing the skull back together. A circle of runes appeared around Shiro and collapsed upon itself, destroying the ghoul in a fiery explosion. “Papa!” Rina said, running towards him with a still weak Kuro following behind her. “Kuro!” Gurei said, reverting back to his human appearance as he ran towards them. Taking Kuro up on one shoulder, he helped his brother stand. “Are you okay?” “Yeah, I’m fine…so, Rina knows now, huh?” “I guess so,” Gurei said, turning to Rina. “Your uncle and I, Rina, are Monstars. We belong to the Ghoul Clan. At a young age, we’re taught to hunt and devour humans. But I am not like the others. When I did my first hunt…I hated it. I wanted nothing to do with it anymore. I-” “Papa, it’s okay. You don’t have to explain everything to me,” Rina said, smiling. “Let’s go home,” Gurei said, as the three of them began to walk back. -“It seems that Shiro was defeated, my lord,” a Monstar said, kneeling in front of a figure sitting in the shadows. “Was it the Hunter?” “No my lord, it was the wielder of the Artifact.” The shadowy figure rose from its seat and began to laugh. “Oh this is too perfect!” “My lord?” “Don’t you see? The Artifact suddenly is used during the start of our attack? They are readying themselves for war!” “War, my lord?” “Yes…and if it’s a war they want…” the shadowy figure walked towards a crystal ball on a pedestal. “It’s a war they’ll get. And I know the first target,” the shadowy figure said, as the crystal ball showed Raika with a figure slowly making its way towards him… NEXT TIME ON KAMEN RIDER FRIGHT! Rina: Papa, how come I can’t use the Artifact? Raika: So that’s how you concealed her presence all this time. Gurei: You’re a little too stuck up, you know that?! Raika: I won’t let a little punk like you boss me around! FrightDriver: LYCAN SKIN! WHEN THINGS RUN AFOUL, TO THE MOON WE HOWL! -Episode Two: Howl! Accept the Lycan’s Pride.
